Marking Commentary

Higher Product Design Unit 2 Product Design: Developing Design Proposals DF4W 12/NAB001 — Exemplar 1

Outcome 1: Produce a design proposal Outcome 1 Marks

Produce a design proposal.

Performance Criteria

PC (a) A wide range of alternative ideas is generated and developed. 20

PC (b) A design proposal is reached through the application of design knowledge. 20

PC (c) Decisions made in reaching the design proposal are recorded and justified. 10 General Comments The specification in this exemplar is included for information. It may have developed by the candidate, perhaps from work in Unit 1 or may have been issued by the teacher/lecturer. It is awarded no marks. PC (a) A wide range of alternative ideas is generated and developed — 20 marks There are a number of alternative initial ideas which are diverse and are relevant to the specification. There is evidence of appropriate use an idea generation technique. The development of the chosen idea also considers alternatives for component parts. There is clear development from initial ideas to proposed solution. This exemplar merits full marks for this PC. Total for PC(a) 20 marks PC (b) A design proposal is reached through the application of design knowledge — 20 marks There is constant reference throughout the folio to issues such as materials, suitable sizes, grip, cost and aesthetics. The references are all relevant and demonstrate an understanding of how the issues have influenced the design proposal. Again, the exemplar merits full marks for this PC. Total for PC(b) 20 marks PC (c) Decisions made in reaching the design proposal are recorded and justified — 10 marks There is evaluation of ideas throughout the folio, sometimes in the form of annotations and sometimes in a short “formal” summary. There are lots of questions asked in the annotations. There is also evidence of decision making on the modelling sheet. There is good evidence of decision making. However, in order to get to the top range of marks for this PC a more overt approach to the recording of the decisions is required. Marks awarded for this PC are top of middle range, ie 6

Total for PC(c) 6 marks

CUT-OFF FOR OUTCOME 1 = 30 TOTAL FOR OUTCOME 1 — 46/50 MARKS = PASS

Outcome 2: Use graphic techniques during the production of design proposal Outcome 2 Marks

Use graphic techniques during the production of a design proposal.

Performance Criteria

PC (a) A range of types of drawings and sketches is produced. 10 PC (b) Drawings and sketches are used to effectively communicate the development of ideas and the design proposal. 20

PC (c) Rendering skills are used to effectively communicate the development of ideas and the design proposal. 10

PC (a) A range of types of drawings and sketches is produced — 10 marks There is evidence of 2D freehand sketching, isometric sketching, orthographic sketches, computer generated orthographic, 2 point perspective and sectional views. All graphics are complete and can be awarded 2 marks each (up to the maximum of 10 marks). Total for PC(a) 10 marks PC (b) Drawings and sketches are used to effectively communicate the development of ideas

and the design proposal — 20 marks All of the drawings and sketches are of high quality and clearly communicate ideas. All of the ideas and details are communicated with appropriate clarity. One of the graphics has been computer generated and the ability to communicate with manual graphics has been demonstrated. This exemplar merits full marks for this PC. Total for PC(b) 20 marks PC (c) Rendering skills are used to effectively communicate the development of ideas

and the design proposal — 10 marks The rendering is highly effective and there is three media used. Again, this exemplar merits full marks for this PC. Total for PC(c) 10 marks CUT-OFF FOR OUTCOME 2 = 24 TOTAL FOR OUTCOME 2 — 40/40 MARKS = PASS

Outcome 3: Use modelling techniques during the production of a design proposal

Outcome 3 Marks

Use modelling techniques during the production of a design proposal.

Performance Criteria

PC (a) A range of types of models is produced. 20

PC (b) Practical skills are used effectively. 20

PC (a) A range of types of models is produced — 20 marks The main mechanism (MDF) and handle (plasticine) are treated as two separate models and are awarded 5 marks are awarded each. Total for PC(a) 10 marks PC (b) Practical skills are used effectively — 20 marks The MDF model was accurately manufactured to the sizes in the orthographic drawing and the detail was appropriate to the type of model. The plasticine model was also appropriate to the type of model. However neither model allowed the candidate to demonstrate the skills required to achieve marks in the top range for this PC. 15 marks awarded. Total for PC(b) 15 marks CUT-OFF FOR OUTCOME 3 = 24 TOTAL FOR OUTCOME 3 — 25/40 MARKS = PASS General Comments This exemplar provides clear evidence for a pass of the first two Outcomes. Outcome 3 would have been more clearly overtaken if the candidate had either used modelling earlier in the folio (to generate ideas) or produced a higher quality prototype.
