A CIRCUS WITH A DIFFERENCE!This week in our series: a job or an adventure?Grant Evans talks about his life in the circus

I’ve got a brilliant job. I work in a circus – but it isn’t a traditional circus because it hasn’t got animals. It’s the Cirque du Soleil TM. This means ‘Circus of the Sun’ in English. Cirque employs about 650 artists from 40 different countries but you don’t have to be an artist to work for this company. It also employs about 3,500 people in its shows all over the world. They work in lots of different jobs – from carpenters to hairdressers.

My job is to help my boss, Joe, find new artists for the shows. My boss is called a ‘talent scout’ – and I’m his assistant. We have to find talented new acrobats and clowns, so we travel a lot and meet a lot of people. The people we want don’t have to be famous but they have to be excellent performers. I also organise the interviews with the performers and book their hotels. I plan their training and put their information on the computer. I have to speak in good French, too, because Cirque du Soleil TM is a French-speaking company from Montreal, Canada.

My job is never boring and I love it. I make a good living and it’s very exciting to travel and work with people from many different countries. GIVE SHORT ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS. (NA KRATKO odgovori na vprašanja.) 1. Where does Grant Evans work?

VII) READING. (Branje.)MOBILES EVERYWHERE

The mobile phone is one of the most popular inventions of the twentieth century. Ask any teenager! How many of your friends have got a mobile phone (or as the Americans say: cell phone)? Or perhaps a better

question is: how many of your friends haven’t got a mobile phone? It’s a fact that a great number of British teenagers now have got a mobile phone. Of course, it’s not only teenagers who have got mobile phones. Mobile phones are much cheaper today than they were a few years ago, so when you walk through the town centre, it seems that everyone is talking, from grandchildren to grandparents! When you sit on a train, you can hear a hundred different conversations. There are thousands of different ring tones (pieces of music you hear when somebody calls you) now so you can hear your favourite music every time someone calls you. You can send text messages to your friends for a few pence. You can take photos and even videos and show your friends where you are, what you’re doing and who you’re with. You can even use your phone when you go on holiday to another country. But not everyone loves mobile phones. Some people say they are expensive to use and there are some people who think that the world was a better place before mobile phones. They don’t like having conversations on trains, in the street or in restaurants and they don’t want to hear other people talking. If you don’t like mobile phones, the best place to go is an aeroplane – you can’t use mobile phones on planes because it’s dangerous.
