1. Introduction
On 21 March 2017, the CA promulgated its work plan for making available
additional radio spectrum for public mobile services to meet the increasing
aspirations of service users towards 2020 and beyond. The work plan has identified
a number of frequency bands, including the 3.4 – 3.6 GHz band (“3.5 GHz band”),
the 24.25 – 27.5 GHz band and the 27.5 – 28.35 GHz band (“26/28 GHz bands”),
that can be made available for reallocation to mobile services to prepare for the
launch of fifth generation mobile (“5G”) services.
China Mobile Hong Kong (“CMHK”) opened the 5G Open Lab of CMCC 5G
Innovation Center in Hong Kong on 16 March 2018, and was firstly granted the
trial permits from OFCA to conduct 5G network trials with commercial ready
products at 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands inside the 5G Open Lab.
During the lab trial arranged between 21 May 2018 and 10 August 2018, 5G
outdoor AAUs and 5G NFV core network equipment is set up inside 5G Open Lab
to demonstrate the peak throughput capacity of 5G network by Test User
Equipment (TUE), and end-to-end 5G network connectivity via 5G Customer
Premise Equipment (CPE) for internet browsing.

4.1 Summary
Test Scenario Bandwidth RSRP (dBm) SINR (dB) Max. DL Throughput
3.5 GHz TUE 100M -66 37 703Mbps
28 GHz TUE 800M -70 22 14.3Gbps
3.5GHz CPE 100M - - 326Mbps
4.2 The maximum downlink throughput result with 3.5 GHz TUE
4.3 The maximum downlink throughput result with 28 GHz TUE
DL ~ 703Mbps
DL ~ 14.3Gbps
8
4.4 Speed test with handset through Wi-Fi connection with CPE
4.5 Basic tests with 5G Core
5 Conclusion
The trial verified the good coverage capability and high data throughput of 5G NR.
Even though the testbed environment contains many metal cabinets which may
result in interference, the RSRP was still able to reach up to -66 to -70 dBm. The
downlink throughput has achieved satisfactory results in the lab environment: 5G
NR with 100MHz of bandwidth at 3.5GHz reached up to 703Mbps and 5G NR
with 800MHz of bandwidth at 28 GHz reached up to 14.3Gbps. Moreover, an end-
to-end 5G network connectivity for internet browsing was demonstrated with good
user experience via a 3.5GHz 5G CPE. Speed test with an existing 4G handset
via the 5G CPE shows a download speed of 326Mbps.
Overall, the trial results served the purpose of showing good data performance of
5G network technology at 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz under indoor lab environment.
