ribute Benefit Concert: In Memory of Jazz

Trumpeter Terry Frenz II is a collaborative

initiative to celebrate and recognize jazz trumpet

great Terry Frenz II for his contributions to the jazz genre,

music education and for all those who he influenced. We

want to ensure Terry's legacy as a virtuoso trumpet man

and a humanitarian is NOT forgotten. We are looking to

use this event as a fundraiser and to network with others

within the jazz and music community as a whole to raise

awareness of who Terry was and how significant his

contributions to music was through a tribute benefit

concert in his honor.

Tribute Benefit Concert Background

he tribute benefit concert to jazz trumpeter Terry Frenz II has been a constant

work in progress since the passing of Terry 16 years ago. As a high school

freshman at Charles F. Brush High School located in Lyndhurst, OH in the fall of

’92, Antwain Thomas, the creator and founder of this tribute was first

introduced to Mr. Frenz. Terry was brought in to take over duties as our jazz band

director between the years of ‘92-‘96. At the age of 28, coming from a stellar career as a

professional jazz trumpeter and music educator, touring with the Glenn Miller Orchestra,

a regular with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra (CJO), as well as performing with a host of

nationally recognized recording artists, among those names being, Doc Severinsen,

Maynard Ferguson, Wynton Marsalis, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme and Henry Mancini,

just to name a few, Terry lead our jazz ensemble with an iron fist. In his short time with

As a pivotal anchor for the jazz ensemble, Terry took Antwain under his wing and

changed his entire outlook on music and life. He is the reason Antwain pursued music as

a career, which in turn, developed him into the music professional he is today.

For this, with permission from Terry’s father, Dr. Terren Frenz, Sr., also a master trumpet

player, Antwain decided to put together this tribute benefit concert in Terry’s honor to

give back to the one man that changed and influenced his life, as well as the lives of

others he impacted. This is our tribute to a great musician, educator, friend, mentor and

humanitarian.

Celebrating a Good Cause: A trumpet legend & friend to all

The primary and main focus of this event is to use the tribute concert as a benefit cause as

a fundraising initiative for the Terry Frenz II Scholarship Fund. This scholarship was

setup to honor Terry’s memory and to provide other aspiring musicians and students an

opportunity to attend college to follow in the footsteps of Terry to follow in their dream

in pursuing a career in music. The concert is both a tribute and benefit to raise funds for

Terry’s scholarship and to support the planning of the concert itself. All proceeds from

the concert will go to The Ohio Brass Factory Foundation, who was responsible for

setting up the scholarship fund so others can continue Terry’s legacy and pursue their

dream of being a music professional. Currently, a donor-ship program is setup where in

exchange for donations to the fund, donors will receive one or more of Terry’s CDs that

were recorded as a freelance musician prior to his passing as a gift for donating to the

fund. We will be using this program, in conjunction with ticket sales and other channels

of merchandising and outreach to raise funds for the Terry Frenz II Scholarship Fund and

to promote Terry’s music.

These are just a few of the artists and groups Terry performed with in his career. You

will notice this is a who’s who of nationally and internationally known artists and

ensembles.

Among his credits, he performed live at Carnegie Hall, was lead trumpet in the OSU

(Ohio State University) Jazz Ensemble for 4 years, lead trumpet for the Glenn Miller

Orchestra for 3 years, including a European tour of major jazz festivals.

Educator Credentials

Public School Systems/Colleges Terry taught for

New Philadelphia

Marlington

Dublin

South-Euclid/Lyndhurst

Malone College

Mount Union College

In addition to being a stellar professional jazz musician and recording artist, he presented

music clinics and concerts to thousands of students throughout the United States, and was

also a music educator, including being the trumpet instructor at Mount Union College and

serving on the faculty of the South Euclid-Lyndhurst City Schools, both which he did

prior to his passing. This is an important aspect and area of Terry’s life, as this is the

root of how this tribute benefit concert for Terry began. Terry was Antwain’s high

school jazz band director at Charles F. Brush High School, the only high school in the

South Euclid-Lyndhurst system. As the saxophone and clarinet section leader of all the

bands, Antwain was Terry’s protégé and become very close to Terry, his father, Dr.

Terren L. Frenz, Sr., a band director, a music educator and master trumpet player and

developed a very good relationship both as a student and an aspiring musician. Terry and

Dr. Frenz are responsible for developing Antwain into the musician and music

professional he is today and the driving reason behind this tribute benefit concert.

Other Educator Accomplishments

Prior to Terry’s passing, he finished a method book for intermediate and advanced

trumpet players. This book offers several warm-ups, exercises, etudes and studies for the

advancement of technical skills, range and endurance studies as well as a glossary, a bit

of philosophy on trumpet playing and achievement in general.

education.

Tribute Concert Logistics

Date/Venue Selection/Time

The tribute benefit concert has been set for a

tentative date of Saturday, February 4th

, 2017 at

the Akron Civic Theatre located in Akron, OH.

The time of the event will be determined at a later

time. With almost 4 years lead time, this provides us plenty of operational time to ensure

every detail for the event is handled with explicit care. This date is significant, as it will

signify the 21st anniversary of Terry’s passing. The Akron Civic Theatre was selected as

a middle point between Cleveland and Canton, which Terry was well known; Canton

being his birthplace and Cleveland being a hub for many of those who knew him for his

stellar performances. The venue also provides a vintage atmosphere and serves the

capacity we are looking for to support the logistics of this event.

Ticket Administration/Box Office

All tickets for the event will be handled by Ticker Master and The Akron Civic Theatre.

We will have other ticket outlets setup so to give everyone an opportunity to pick up

tickets in their local neighborhood. Tickets will also be available for purchase online

through Ticket Master, PayPal, the main website for the event (under construction), as

well as select radio stations and promotion agents. We have not set prices for tickets as

of yet. We will announce price of tickets when that info becomes available.

National TV/Radio Broadcast

We are looking to make this event available as a live national TV and radio broadcast

from The Akron Civic Theatre. We are looking to have both PBS and NPR to carry this

broadcast across all affiliates across the country. We believe they will be able to provide

the necessary audience and listener profile to meet the requirements of the format of the

event and generate general interest. We have spoken with production management at

IdeaStream and they are interested in the project and have committed to further

conversations about further exploring partnership in the event.

Page 6: Terry Frenz II Tribute Event - · PDF fileTribute Benefit Concert: In Memory of Jazz Trumpeter Terry Frenz II February 6, 1965 – February 7, ... initiative to celebrate and recognize

6

As good faith gesture, we will donate a portion of the proceeds to both PBS and NPR to

show our support for their contribution. A post production DVD of the broadcast will

also be available after the show for a small fee, which will go to The Ohio Brass Factory

Foundation, on behalf of the Terry Frenz II Scholarship Fund.

Production/Venue Management/Event Planning

For a major event such as this, we will be using some of the largest names in production,

event management and planning. We are still going through the list of vendors, but some

of the names we are considering are IMG Artists, Executive Visions, Inc., SuperSonic

Events, Millionaire’s Concierge, TVA Productions and Barco Media & Entertainment,

just to name a few. As for catering and event planning, we are thinking of using

SAVOR. They provide complete planning and logistical support for high-profile catering

and event requirements. This will be a red-carpet event; therefore, we will be working

with only the best in event production, planning and venue management.

Entertainment for Event

The Glenn Miller Orchestra

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be the main draw for this tribute. Terry performed and

toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra as their lead trumpet player for 3 years. He was

their rock and foundation for the years he performed with them. We will be using The

tying Terry and his family’s relationship with The Glenn Miller Orchestra. We are in the

process of securing the orchestra for the event.

Cleveland Jazz Orchestra

http://www.clevelandjazz.org

The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra or CJO

their organization. We are in the process of securing the orchestra for the event.

The OSU (Ohio State University) Jazz Ensemble

http://music.osu.edu/page/jazz-ensembles

This is the college university jazz ensemble Terry served in while attending Ohio State

The Terry Frenz II Tribute Jazz Orchestra

Website under construction

The Terry Frenz II Tribute Jazz Orchestra is the jazz orchestra that we are putting

together to perform tracks from Terry’s last CD prior to his passing; Big Band, Etc. This

will be an 18-piece jazz orchestra that will represent musicians from Terry’s past and

others who were connected to Antwain’s music education and others who knew Terry.

The musicians in this group will represent the best in their craft, including music

educators, band directors, recording artists and other professional capacities. We are

recruiting the musicians as we speak. Antwain will be performing with the orchestra in

the saxophone section, representing the legacy and the music Terry left behind.

The Cleveland Orchestra

http://www.clevelandorchestra.com

The Cleveland Orchestra is another Cleveland world renowned orchestra. They are a

classical orchestra and they will be providing background music for the event for

transitions between the different acts, performers, guest speakers, etc. We’re using them

as a pit orchestra component to the tribute. We are in the process of securing the

orchestra for the event.

Featured Artists

Maria Jacobs

http://www.mariajacobs.com

Maria Jacobs, a Cleveland-native vocalist is an artist that has a vast background and

brings not only a dynamic jazz sound, but who also knew of Terry and will add a unique

blend of straight ahead and the big band swing sound. She will be featured with The

Glenn Miller Orchestra as their guest soloist. We have secured Ms. Jacobs for this event.

Sean Jones

Sean Jones, a Pittsburg, PA native is a new generation of virtuosic jazz trumpeters with a

dangerous style and ability. Mr. Jones is the artistic director and a member of The

Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. He will be featured both with the CJO and the Terry Frenz II

Tribute Jazz Orchestra. It was an exhausting search to find a trumpet player that could

come close to Terry’s supernatural range and musicianship. Mr. Jones surely meets and

exceeds the bar of excellence and will represent Terry’s memory with style. We have

secured Mr. Jones for this event.

Wynton Marsalis

http://www.wyntonmarsalis.org

We’re sure this gentleman needs no introduction. Jazz trumpet virtuoso and musicology

master Wynton Marsalis will be another draw for this event. Terry also performed with

Mr. Marsalis in his vast music career, among many other jazz greats. We are looking to

bring Wynton to the stage to remember Terry in grand style and fashion. Wynton will be

featured with both the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and the Terry Frenz II Tribute Jazz

Orchestra, along with Sean Jones for a masterful demonstration of what Terry truly meant

to the Ohio jazz scene. We are in the process of securing Mr. Marsalis for the event.

Event Format

With such a large event and production, the tribute benefit has been divided into 7 major

areas to organize the concert format. This is to help the event run smoothly and to have

as much transparency in running the logistics as possible.

1) Master of Ceremonies

The Master of Ceremonies will be the host of the entire event, providing commentary,

making introductions of each group/performer and interacting with the artists and special

guests and speakers of the event. This person will be a celebrity of some kind that is

recognized in the big band jazz world as another draw and focus for the event.

2) Event Announcer

The event announcer will be the person who will narrate the event format and work with

the Master of Ceremonies to provide continuity. This person will be a recognizable voice

to add another dimension of branding for this event.

3) Event Host

Antwain will be assuming this role. This is where Antwain will introduce the event, give

background on the tribute, Terry and overall commentary throughout the event. As the

primary organizer, Antwain will provide an in between dialogue for the event, make

special mentions and so fourth. This will be blended in with the Master of Ceremonies

and the Event Announcer.

4) Artist & Ensemble Performances

This is the meat and heart of this tribute. This is where the four groups, the Glenn Miller

Orchestra, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra (CJO), OSU Jazz Ensemble and The Terry Frenz II

Tribute Jazz Orchestra will be performing. Each one of these groups will perform tunes

that represent Terry’s contributions to the jazz genre.

Page 14: Terry Frenz II Tribute Event - · PDF fileTribute Benefit Concert: In Memory of Jazz Trumpeter Terry Frenz II February 6, 1965 – February 7, ... initiative to celebrate and recognize

14

The Cleveland Orchestra will be providing background pit orchestra music between all

the speakers and all event pieces of the concert. Between each performance, there will be

guest speakers and other presentations to add dynamic to the event.

5) Guest Speakers

This will be the portion of the event for guest speakers. This will be a time for past

students, music educators, music professionals, musicians, family, friends and associates

to speak on how Terry influenced and affected their lives. Each guest speaker will be

spread out throughout the format of the entire event.

6) Award Ceremony, Presentations & Dedications

This will be the area of the tribute where awards, commendations, presentations and

dedications will be given to those who had a significant role in Terry’s life and those who

deserved to be honored, including Terry, his family and all those who were instrumental

in his life as a son, friend, music educator, jazz musician and mentor.

7) Finale

This will be the area of the event where we wrap up and conclude the tribute benefit

concert, make last mentions and bring everyone up on stage that made this event possible.

The Cleveland Orchestra will play entrance and exit music. Being a nationally televised

event, there will be an opportunity to make closing remarks to both TV and Internet

viewers of the event, as well as radio listeners.

Event Presentation

These are the organizations that will be presenting the tribute benefit concert. First

American Media®, in partnership with The Ohio Brass Factory Foundation and The

International Trumpet Guild will be the presenters of the event. We will be requesting

YAMAHA Corporation of America and Boosey and Hawks-Beeson Corporation to

participate as primary co-sponsors and media partners of this event, as both of these

organizations were central to Terry’s identity as a jazz artist.

Marketing, Promotion, Advertising & PR

The marketing, promotion, advertising and PR of this event will be just as massive as the

event itself. For an event of this magnitude, we are enlisting giants in the PR arena,

including Jazz Publicity, a world renowned jazz publicist for the national jazz arena. In

addition, we will be working with a jazz critic to do a write-up on this event that will be

featured in all the major national jazz print and online publications. This event will be

promoted in 8 Ohio markets, including Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Kent,

Columbus, Cincinnati and Alliance, as well as with all print/news publications, national

jazz magazines, radio, TV, in-flight marketing channels (airlines), Internet and all major

digital content subscribers, including mobile carriers, cable and on demand multimedia

Sponsorship & Media Platforms

Although there are many challenges in putting a tribute concert of this magnitude

together, the sponsorship and media exposure opportunity is limitless. Remembering a

jazz artist that wasn’t recognized nationally presents a challenge in generating enough

interest to justify the level of sponsorship required for an event of this caliber. However,

there are many individuals, institutions and organizations in the music industry that are

nationally recognized that recognized Terry Frenz II as a great jazz trumpeter, which

lends to the legacy he left behind and the impact he made on the jazz world prior to his

passing.

With jazz music giants like The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, Doc

Conclusion

When looking at such an event of this magnitude, and the premise behind the thought

process of creating such an event, it really goes to show and demonstrate the type of man

Terry Frenz II was and the legacy he left behind. Although this was a project that was

envisioned and conceived by one individual, it represents something larger than all of us.

Terry not only stood for great musicianship, but he influenced and re-defined how we all

relate as musicians and people, as well as how to create new ideas within that fabric of

communication. He raised our awareness and laid a foundation, not only in music, but in

life as a whole.

He was not just a great jazz musician, a larger than life music educator, but he had the

natural gift to bring the best out in those that were fortunate enough to be in his presence.

Even though he was not labeled as an international superstar, he was viewed as one of the

strongest foundations the jazz music genre ever had and those who were labeled as

superstars in the business saw him as such. If one manages to be compared to being the

“Doc Severinsen” of his generation; that alone speaks volumes for his contributions

across the board. Therefore, his contributions to jazz were just as significant as those

who came before him.
