The Arab Spring and the Fall of Mubarak: Egyptians rose up in early 2011 and forced the ouster of longtime President Hosni Mubarak.

The Rise and Fall of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB): MB candidate Mohammed Mursi won the June 2012 presidential election but after a period of economic turbulence and rising crime, protests erupted.

Military Rule: On July 3, Egypt’s military removed Mursi from power, replacing him with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court, suspending the Islamist-backed constitution.

Surge in Terrorist Attacks: Egypt has witnessed an upsurge in jihadist violence since the ouster of Mursi. Militants, previously confined to the northern Sinai Peninsula have employed various attack TTPs against an expanding number of targets.

General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Military Egypt has been governed by military backed rulers

from 1952 through 2011. General al-Sisi led a coup against President

Mohammed Mursi on July 3, 2013. Muslim Brotherhood leaders were arrested and

there was a violent crackdown on protesters.

The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood A Sunni Islamist movement founded in 1928 that

believes in implementing Sharia law in all aspects of life.

Banned on multiple occasions under military rule, and blamed for several assassination attempts.

Won the presidential elections in 2012, but was ousted a year later.

Many of the leaders have since been arrested, and the younger, more extreme elements are accused of instigating violence.

Hamas Founded in 1987, Hamas is a direct descendent

of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007, and

since then has fought two wars with Israel. Uses tunnels under the Gaza-Sinai border to

smuggle weapons and fighters, as well as other goods into and out of the Strip.

Enjoyed close relations with Mohammed Mursi, but has suffered from the closure of its smuggling tunnels since the military took power.

LibyaSince the fall of Col. Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has become a major hub for the smuggling of weapons and fighters to al-Qaeda affiliates and other jihadist groups around the world, particularly to Sinai.

Sudan Sudan maintains that the coup is an Egyptian

internal affair, despite their close ties during Mursi’s reign that stemmed from mutual Islamist leaderships.

Sudan has denied accusations that it permits the smuggling of Turkish weapons through its territory to Islamist groups in Egypt.
