His careerHe previously directed and appeared in a number of productions at North Carolinas Theatre In the Park.He moved to New York, later on landing a role in the ensemble for Barnum.His big break was in 1982, when he landed a role in Andrew Lloyd Webbers Broadway production of Cats, originating the Broadway role of Rum Tum Tugger.He continued to work his way through Broadway. He has originated and portrayed Javert in Les Misrables, as well as The Beast in the Broadway adaption of Disneys Beauty and the Beast. Two of which are Broadways longest running musicals. He earned two Tony nominations in 7 years for his roles in both of the roles he portrayed mentioned above. He has made 25 television appearances and was in 19 stage productions.Currently in the cast of Tuck Everlasting, opening today (Feb. 4th, 2015).

Defining his rolesJavert He felt that this was his most profound role he has ever done. He felt the role had a lot of purpose in the story. The character had big emotions and he treated like Shakespeare.Rum Tum Tugger He defined this as his big break, due to the big avalanche of an advance sales and the reputation of the composer.The Beast He thought this was the most difficult role he has ever done, since the make-up would take at least 8 hours when the production was just taking off. Afterwards, it used to take him 45 minutes with just two make-up artists. It required the executives to look all over the area to make the prosthetic just right.
