Tips on Cleaning Mold from Your Home

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:

1 cup chlorine or oxygen bleach1/4 cup liquid dish soap

Brush broom

Clean leaves, twigs, dead plants, decaying vegetation and other debris from around your home's foundation. This will eliminate a common food source for fungus. Be sure doors and windows are sealed.

Mix 1 gallon of warm water with 1 cup of chlorine bleach. Add 1/4 cup of liquid dish soap and mix with a spoon. Alternatively, replace the chlorine bleach with 1 cup of oxygen bleach. Oxygen bleach -- which comes in a powdered form -- is a safer alternative to chlorine bleach. Unlike chlorine, oxygen bleach will not harm plants or discolor surfaces.

Dip a brush broom in the mixture and scrub all molded areas. Scrub siding, wood and painted surfaces with the mixture. Let the mixture sit on the surface for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse the surface clean with a water hose. Continue until you have removed all traces of the mold.

TIPS & WARNINGS

•Wearrubbergloveswhenworkingwithbleachtopreventpossible skin irritation. Cover clothing so it won’t be damaged.•Nevermixbleachwithammoniaorproductscontaining

ammonia. The resulting fumes are dangerous. When using a power washer, be sure doors and windows

are sealed and be sure to use the proper power pressure to not damage the surface of the wall or driveway.

BLOOD PRESSURETAKE CONTROL OF THE SILENT KILLER

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is sometimes called the silent killer because there are often no symptoms. That’s why keeping track of blood pressure is one of the most important things a person can do to stay healthy, said doctors at Baylor College of Medicine.

Left untreated, hypertension, can cause organ damage over time, leading to heart attack, blindness, kidney failure or stroke, said Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, professor of medicine at BCM.

Some factors that are associated with hypertension are diabetes, family history of hypertension, being overweight, taking in too much sodium, drinking excessive alcohol and smoking. Generally a healthy reading is 120/80, and hypertension diagnosis is made at 140/90. People considered prehypertensive generally have readings that fall between 120/80 and 140/90. Doctors always check blood pressure as part of appointments and there are also many locations where blood pressure machines are available for anyone to have their pressure checked. Bozkurt advises talking to a doctor to determine if your reading is at a healthy level rather than taking the machine's reading at face value.

“For a relatively healthy person not suffering from any other illnesses, only a few lifestyle changes like diet modifications and exercise may be needed,” said Bozkurt.
