Previously, I served on the Terra Nova Home Owners’ Association (HOA) for six years as Secretary. I also have worked in a number of voluntary positions over the years, principally while my children attended area schools. In that time I have involved myself in many ways including: being part of the “Night Watchmen” of our neighborhood before we had our private off duty contract, Volunteering at several community parties and events, and serving on the Board of Directors for nearly three years in several different positions. I have a love for this community and a want to help keep its rich history alive, strong, and growing. THE NEW DIRT

The November YOM winner is the Rieansnider family at 5306 Slashwood Lane. This property is lovely all year round. The lawn is always lush and manicured. The shrubs and plants are healthy and well cared for. The blue plumbago and yellow lantana are blooming right now and add a nice contrast to the variety of greens. In the spring and summer the agapanthus adds color to the yard. The backyard is beautiful, too. Walk or drive by and get some ideas for your own yard. Thanks to the Rieansniders for the many years of taking pride in their home.

Shortly before the opening night performance of HGO’s Aida, Greg and I stopped by the coffee bar in the lobby of the Sundance Cinema for a hot drink and a nosh. Feeling a bit adventurous, we passed on the usual chocolate chip cookie and decided on a Pecan Toffee cookie, and to go with it, a cup of Earl Grey tea. The tea was lovely, but the cookie, OMG! Probably the BEST cookie EVER!!!! Of course with Christmas just around the corner, I HAD to find a recipe. And thanks the food blog SavoryNotes.com, here it is.

Susan Tsujimoto, Editor

Maple Pecan Toffee Cookies2 cups all-purpose flour2 tsp baking powder1/4 tsp fine salt3/4 cup unsalted butter at room temp1/2 cup real maple syrup* 1/2 cup dark brown sugar1 egg1/2 tsp vanilla extract1 cup chopped pecans*1 cup toffee bits, e.g. Heath Bits ‘o Brickle

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, beat together butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup.

3. Add egg and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture, and beat until thoroughly combined.

4. In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients in medium bowl to wet ingredients in large bowl. Mix until just combined.

5. Hand-stir in pecans and toffee bits.6. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto prepared cookie

sheet.7. Bake at 350°F for 18-20 minutes or until slightly brown

around the edges.

*Notes: Recommend using Grade B maple syrup. If you don’t have grade B, use Grade A and replace the vanilla extract with maple extract. Also, I’d recommend toasting the pecans before baking to bring out the flavor of the pecans. To toast pecans: spread the nuts in a single-layer on a baking sheet. Bake nuts 10-15 minutes at 350°F. For even toasting, stir and flip the nuts half-way through baking. Keep an eye on the pecans towards the end of baking, so they don’t burn. The nuts should be fragrant and slightly darker than they were prior to toasting.
