Harmful emissions may reach critical health levels.Especially the vapors emanating from freshly instal-led sealing systems and building materials may in-crease the concentration of noxious volatile organ-ic compounds (VOCs) and cause critical levels of in-door air pollution – even several days after theirinstallation. A number of eco labels provide reliab-le information on the intensity of emissions.

Maximum emission limits specified by EMICODE EC 1PLUS

Window and facade sealants, foams and membranesthat have been awarded the EC 1PLUS seal are allowedto emit only the following maximum amounts ofVOC to the surrounding indoor air: 750 μg/m³(= 0.00075 g) 3 days after installation and 60 μg/m³(= 0.00006 g) 28 days after installation.

The largest single location of energy loss from the building is via windows and doors. By replacingold windows and doors and expertly sealing the connections between the buildingelements, a major part of the energy loss can be prevented in the long term.

Structural properties

The requirements resulting from legal regulationsare making increasingly high demands on the pro-per and workmanlike sealing of the connectionjoints between windows, window elements, frontdoors etc. and the building itself.

Making the building shell resistant to air,wind and driving rain and preventing the for-mation of mold are structural necessities stipulatedby the regulations of the German EnergySaving Ordinance (EnEV 2014) and DIN4108. According to the laws of building physics,water vapor tries to move through walls and cei-lings in order to be at the same concentration onboth sides – moving as a rule from the in- to theoutside. It always takes the path of least resis-tance. And that's the connection joint.

In times where the low-energy and the passivehouse are state of the art, the proper sealing ofjunctions is of particular significance. Structuraldamage caused by the formation of condensationwater in the area of connection joints – betweenthe building structure and windows, window ele-ments or front doors – has strongly increased inthe past few years.

The guideline for mounting windows and doors,issued by the RAL Quality Assurance Associationin 2014, provides comprehensive information onthe state of the art. One of its most important con-stituents is the 3-level principle of window sealing.

3rd level: On the outside, the jointmust be protected from driving rain, windand UV light. Water that penetrated fromoutside must be controlled and directly drained to the outside. At the same time,moisture must be allowed to escape fromthe functional area to the outside.

2nd level: The center part ofthe joint is the area of thermaland acoustic insulation.

1st level: The inner area of the jointmust be airtight towards the living space, thus separating the indoor fromthe outdoor climate. In this area, thetemperature must always be above thecritical temperature for mold growth(13-degree isotherm).

In the classic application on individual windows, TEROSON FO SD 3 is mainly used as a protective strip or sheet in the water-draining layer under the windowsill. To ensure rapid andeconomical application, TEROSON FO SD 3 is either equipped on one side (SK 1) or on both sides (SK 2) with a 30 mm wide self-adhesive strip.

TEROSON AD KDS (former Terotech KDS)TEROSON adhesive and sealant paste is used for bonding TEROSON FO SD 3 SK1 to thebuilding shell. Due to its pasty consistency and levelling properties, it can also be applied onrough and uneven substrates, ensuring 100% tightness against air and driving rain.

This product features an enormous range of applications in window and facade sealing.TEROSON FO SD 150 M+S is traditionally used on curtain walls and ensures the vapor-proof and airtight sealing of facade elements. It prevents the penetration of water vapor and the formation of condensation.

In the area of windows and doors, this self-adhesive sealing strip is often used at the wall-foundation junction due to its full-surface bonding and good bitumen resistance. When waterproofing in compliance with DIN 18195, parts 4 and 5 (e.g. in the thresholdarea balcony and junction sealing along foundation walls), it is necessary to use TEROSON FO KSK M+S.

Application table TEROSON PT ecoMAX 600 / 300

TEROSON PT ecoMAX tapes are open to vapor diffusi-on. In terms of weatherproofing, they are resistant to drivingrain. When choosing this type of sealing, attention must al-ways be paid to predefined joint tolerances. Pre-com-pressed, acrylate-impregnated PUR sealing tapes expandshortly after their installation in the window joint and rapidlyclose the joint between the window and the building shell. Thetapes can accommodate slightly uneven substrates within thepredefined joint tolerance range.

We offer compressed cellular foam tapes in two differentqualities, depending on the intended use and buildingheight. Buildings of up to 20 m height are sealed withTEROSON PT ecoMAX 300. For buildings of this height, sea-ling up to 300 Pa against driving rain is sufficient. TEROSONPT ecoMAX 600 has been developed for buildings above20 m height (up to 100 m). Tapes providing 600 Pa resis-tance to driving rain are more than a match for the weatherconditions at such heights.

TEROSON PT 3 multiMAX is a pre-compressed,acrylate-impregnated PUR sealing tape. It meets therequirements of the currently valid EnEV and of the RAL Gui-deline on the Planning and Installation of Windows and FrontDoors.

Thanks to the excellent airtightness of TEROSON PT 3multiMAX, the loss of convective heat is significantly reduced.The multi-functional tape ensures reliable sealing while at the

same time being permeable to vapor diffusion in compliancewith the RAL principle.

Moisture entrapped in the building during construction is al-lowed to escape. On the middle sealing level, reliable heatand sound insulation are ensured. TEROSON PT 3 multiMAXfeatures excellent resistance to driving rain (≥ 600 Pa).On one side, the tape is equipped with a self-adhesive stripto facilitate installation. The multi-functional joint sealing tape TEROSON PT 1000 is excellently suited for providing re-liable sealing of window and door connections on three levels. Due to its extremely low jointpermeability (a-value of zero), TEROSON PT 1000 ensures airtight sealing of the indoor area,thus achieving a significant reduction in the loss of convective heat. At the same time, the sea-ling tape features an optimal vapor diffusion gradient from the inside to the outside (sd-valuegradient of 50:1), thus ensuring reliable removal of moisture. Any moisture entrapped in thebuilding during construction is allowed to escape. This helps avoid later structural damage caused by the formation of conden-sation water in the area of connection joints. Reliable heat and sound insulation are ensured on the middle sealing level. TERO-SON PT 1000 features a very high resistance to driving rain of more than 1,000 Pa (a tightness of 900 Pa corresponds to awind force of 140 km/h, i.e. 12 on the Beaufort scale). Joints exist where structural components connectwith each other. They can be protected by fillers,joint sealants, sealing tapes or covering materials.The pattern of forces generated in the joint as awhole, or adjacent structures, must be equilibrat-ed.

ConsumptionSealant consumption is calculated based on thejoint dimensions as specified in the various tech-nical guidelines and instructions. The adjacent ta-ble provides some calculated consumption values.

In order to ensure the long-term functionality ofjoints, it is not simply enough to "fill" them. If thejoints are to fulfil their structural task properly, it isnecessary to match the type of sealing with thejoint’s structural function.

Exterior wall joints in structural components mustcomply with DIN 18540. The parallel joint gap isfilled with a closed-cell PE foam beading. The se-lected backfill profile must be dimensioned in sucha way that it presses firmly against both sides ofthe joint when inserted. This technique preventsadhesion of the sealant to three sides, i.e. adhe-sion also to the bottom of the joint. Three-sided ad-hesion invariably results in structural damage.

The dimensions of joints must also comply withDIN 18540. The movements of structural compo-nents must be calculated before filling. The mostsignificant and largest movement that occurs is al-ways longitudinal expansion resp. shrinkage dueto temperature variation. When setting the di-mensions of the joint, it has to be remembered thattotal deformation (shrinkage + expansion) of thesealant must not exceed 25 % of the joint width'w'.

In metal, glass and facade construction,the use of profiled, self-adhesive sealingtapes and sealing beads supplied as rollsor on spools provides extra safety.

They are simply installed manually without needfor additional equipment – either before or duringassembly. We differ between the following typesof sealing: overlapping, self-adhesive and pres-sure seals (with mechanical fastening).

Overlapping seals are used e.g. for fixed gla-zing. Due to the powerful bond between glasspane and window frame, this type of sealing addsstrength for bearing dynamic loads. Any stressesarising within the joints, e.g. caused by differentthermal changes in length, are reduced. Over-lapping seals are also used to exclude unfavor-able environmental effects in joints. Such types ofcovering seal also achieve an optically flawlesssurface in joints.

Self-adhesive elastic seals help simplify thestructural design, making assembly easier and, insome cases, conventional mechanical fasteningredundant. Such types of constructions are alsoused when contact interaction between materialsor components is suspected of causing corrosion.

In addition, the use of such seals can absorbsound transmitted through structural components.In effect, the elastic adhesive reduces or preventstransmission of vibration. Another advantage isthat mechanically fastened components canat the same time be sealed.
