Success for Your Children Movember at the train
Principal’s Column
16th November 2011
Last week was extremely busy. Of great
interest was the visit of “the camel man”
who visited the school on a tour around
SA and western NSW to raise money for
the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The
visit provided an opportunity to learn
about these majestic creatures and their
history in Australia.
Menindee is linked to camels through
the Burke and Wills expedition and the
death of Dost Mohammad whose grave
lies just to west of the Menindee
township. Through the generosity of the
SRC $400 was donated to the RFDS.
The presenter gave our students
behaviour as A1.
All our students benefit through the
RFDS presence and the service they
provide to our Medical Centre. I must at
this point say thanks to Marie Kelly and
all workers at the clinic who provide us
with a great service. The school and
myself appreciate it greatly.
It was disappointing that the rain on
Wednesday prevented us from seeing
Red Dog out in the open air. However
the support we received from families
was fantastic and far exceeded last year’s
attendance. The National Film and
Archives and James Giddy from West
Darling Arts were very appreciative.
Mr Ken Tuckey brought two camels to the school last week and gave an interesting talk to students. He is seen
above receiving a cheque from the school which will go to the RFDS.
Thursday saw our primary students
enjoy the Australian classic the Magic
Pudding in Broken Hill. Again
behaviour was great and the students
enjoyed the occasion. On Friday
students in Year 9/10 enjoyed a classic
film “Tomorrow When the World
began”, a film based on the novel by
John Marsden.
Yet again students and staff solemnly remembered those who have fought and died for our Country. What a world apart the scene portrayed – the beauty and silence of our beautiful war memorial in Menindee from the chaos and death from the many theatres of war in which Australians have been engaged. Even sadder was the knowledge that three bodies of Australian soldiers had recently arrived home from Afghanistan. Well done Mr Bailey for your involvement in the event.
On Friday students from Year 7 and 8
were immersed in the program “The
Real Game”. This is a simulation of life
and work with students making real
choices. Thanks to Mr Hazeleger for
organising this event.
This week is equally as busy and
exciting. Year 10 and Year 11 are off to

From the Office
Canberra with students from Wilcannia as part of
the Wilvandee Access Program. This will be a great
excursion and our students are so lucky.
Students from two universities, studying to
become teachers, will visit Menindee on
Wednesday as part of a trip beyond the Blue
Mountains to encourage them to apply and change
their attitudes about teaching in the west.
Our 2011 students will next week start their travels to
New Zealand. The school captains will commence their
trip a little earlier by spending three days in
Canberra. This is second time that this has
been organised and I thank Senator Mark
Arbib for his generosity in once again
hosting our students. Brian DebusBrian DebusBrian DebusBrian Debus
