Dear Parents & Community,
Welcome back to Term 2.
This term will be a very busy term, with lots happening for our students and community.
Cross Country
We start this term with our school Cross Country, which will be held tomorrow. This event is popular with the students and proves to be a real test of strength and stamina. Thank you to Mrs Berzekian, Mrs Bareham and Ms O’Dwyer for organising the respective 3-6 and K-2 events.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN commences in Week 3 of this term, with students from Years 3 and 5 sitting tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy. Once again this year, our students will sitting the online version of the tests across a two week period in Weeks 3 and 4 of this term.
If your child is away on a given testing day, please don’t panic, as we have opportunity to catch up missed tests within the two week period.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN testing, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the stage supervisor for their grade, Ms Harbridge or Mr Taylor.
New Screens
The last of our new interactive displays were installed yesterday. Our old Smartboards and projectors have now been fully decommissioned and replaced with much brighter and more durable LCD displays. These new displays come with significantly longer lifespans and far lower running costs than the old screens. I would very much like to thank our P&C for funding the purchase and installation of these screens across the school. Our students will benefit from this investment for many years to come.

Staffing
Welcome to Mr Cox who starts with us today on class 2J. Mr Cox has joined our school from Newport Public School and brings a wealth of teaching experience and a strong musical talent. We are very excited to have him as part of our teaching team.
Welcome also, to Miss Courtney Young, who joins us this term as a School Learning Support Officer, working within our learning support programs. Our School Learning Support Officers are funded from a range of sources, including Department Equity and Integration Funding and are supplemented by our school P&C, who generously support our school’s learning support programs each year. We are truly appreciative of this extra support as it makes a tremendous difference to all our students throughout K-6.
Congratulations to Maxine Johnson, who today starts her first day as a permanently appointed Assistant Principal at Gladesville PS. Maxine will be missed by all of us at Epping North, and we wish her well in her new role. Whilst Maxine’s permanent appointment creates a space in our teaching roster, we will not be permanently appointing a teacher to this role until 2020, so as to minimise disruption to our school.

SCHOOL NEWS SRC Treasurers Apologies to Cherisse who is co treasurer with Cooper in 2019. The other candidates were Imogen and Samantha.
P & C NEWS This is my last year at Epping North and am looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help assist in the School Garden.
All we need are a couple of parents who can help the environment monitors occasionally and enjoy a bit of camaraderie while tending the garden. It’s a nice relaxing and quite social morning or afternoon.
It doesn’t take much work as the garden is now quite established. A tidy up, weed, seasonal planting and of course……watering regularly. The watering also needs to be done over the school holidays especially in the summer months.
If you can spare 1/2 hr a week (it doesn’t have to be every week) to help maintain the garden that would be fantastic.
Remember all foods grown go back to all the kids on canteen days. No chemicals and all natural.
Thanks, Anne
CANTEEN NEWS
Welcome back to school for Term 2. We look forward to seeing what delicious, home-made delicacies Carolyn and her team of wonderful volunteers have in store for our kids this term. Please note that the first Wednesday of each term is set aside as a Food Preparation Day. As such, there will be no full canteen service tomorrow. Drinks, snacks, and icy only will be available for purchase at the canteen window.
Unfortunately this term we have lost the amazing Amanda Small from the roster. Amanda has been volunteering every Friday from 8:30 – 9:30, placing stickers on bags and organising orders so that the Friday team can commence filling them straight away. Due to the high numbers of orders received on Fridays, this has proved invaluable in getting recess and lunch orders out on time. We are currently looking for someone to replace Amanda for the Friday morning shift. If you are able to help out on Friday mornings, for approximately 1-1.5 hours, or would like to know more, I would love to hear from you.
Apart from that, the canteen roster is looking strong for term 2. We have a great team of volunteers who work in either two, three, or five hour shifts, filling orders for recess and lunch. Volunteering for canteen typically requires only one shift per term, and involves following the direction of the canteen manager, Carolyn Booty. It’s easy to do, and is a great way to become involved in the famous Epping North School Community. If you are interested in joining the canteen team just email me at [email protected] , or call/ text 0427223065.

CHESS CLUB NEWS
Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Epping North Public School is held on Fridays from 3:15pm to 4:15pm, starting on 3 May 2019. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.
If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email [email protected] for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.
