Consideration in Course selection Make realistic choices, which reflect your interests, capabilities and talents.
Boys ask yourself✓ What subjects am I good at?✓ What subjects do I enjoy?
✓ What do I want to do beyond school?
✓ Which subjects are important and related to my career options?
✓ Am I sufficiently prepared to handle these subjects?
Year 10 Information

Processing of Preliminary Subject indications. The College reserves the right of placement of students in courses in cases where: -
➢ Demand does not justify the running of a course. In some cases, composite classes may be created.
➢ There is excess demand for a course for which the College has no capacity to provide extra classes.
➢ The degree of difficulty of the course is deemed beyond the demonstrated ability of the candidate that is evidenced by Year 10 results.
➢ Consequently, all application forms received by the College are considered ‘preliminary indicators’, until such time as all the information regarding individual students and total course demand is available.
Year 10 Information

English Courses Stage 6All students must study at least 2 Units of English for their Preliminary HSC and HSC. The available courses are:
➢Standard English➢Advanced English➢English Studies
Students of Advanced English may also choose to study a third Unit of English in Year 11:
➢Preliminary HSC Extension English (1 Unit)And, in Year 12, students may choose to study:
➢Extension English I➢Extension English 2 (The Major Work)
STANDARD, ADVANCED OR ENGLISH STUDIES
So Which 2 Unit Course do I Choose?
Year 10 Information

Ask yourself:• Do you enjoy reading?• Are you good at writing
essays when you have a scaffold?
• Do you like to work through tasks with support and guidance from the teacher?
If you can answer yes then Standard English may be the course for you.
Year 10 Information
Evening
Be Honest• Do you enjoy reading?• Do you enjoy English,
especially when your teacher provides clear instructions about what to write in your essay or how to read a text?
• Are you embarking on a non-ATAR pattern of study?
If you can answer yes then English Studies may be the course for you.
Year 10 Information
Evening
Ask Yourself• Do you like reading?• Are you good at writing essays
and are you very confident in your command of literacy?
• Do you enjoy studying very complex texts such as Shakespeare?
• Do you enjoy independent work and research?
• Are you averaging a mark of 75% or more?
If you can answer yes then Advanced English may be the course for you.
Again, you need to be honest with yourself.
But what about Extension?
Year 10 Information
Evening
Extension EnglishThis course is for students who are completely passionate about English. As an Extension student, you will be exposed frequently to a vast range of literary and popular texts.Much of the work occurs outside of the classroom. There is scope to take your own direction in the texts that you study and the ideas that you wish to pursue, especially if you choose to complete a Major Work.
Year 10 Information
Evening
Scaling• Scaling patterns change every
year.• It is more important to spend
2 years on the best course for you.
• Your marks will improve if you feel confident in a subject and if you enjoy the course.
• You can achieve an ATAR over 90 if you take Standard English
Year 10 Information
Evening
So Where Do I Go From Here if I Have Questions?• Speak to your class teacher – seek their recommendation –
they will always have your best interest at heart.• Speak to the English Head of Department.• Take an honest look at your results and your commitment to
the English course in Year 10.• Speak to Mrs. Knowles, especially if you are considering a
non-ATAR pattern of study.• DON’T pick a course because your friend has or because you
would like a certain teacher.

❖ Designed to support TAFE and other vocational courses.❖ Provides an appropriate mathematical background for
students requiring financial, statistical and practical problem-solving capabilities.
❖ Builds a strong foundation for university studies in the areas of business, humanities, nursing, and paramedical sciences.
❖ Studying Standard Mathematics in Years 11 & 12 will be beneficial in helping develop practical and analytical skills than not studying maths at all.
Standard Mathematics
Year 10 Information
Evening
Year 10 Information
Evening
❖ Remains a Calculus-based course
❖ Provides a sufficient basis for further studies in Mathematics as a minor discipline at a tertiary level in support of courses such as life sciences or commerce.
❖ Students intending to go to university to study any kind of STEM degree(Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) should choose Mathematics Advanced and are strongly advised to include Mathematics Extension 1
❖ The University of Sydney has introduced prerequisites from 2019. Students will need to score at least a Band 4 in Mathematics Advanced (or an E3 in Mathematics Extension 1) in order to enter first year subjects in a wide range of economics, commerce, science and engineering degrees.
Advanced Mathematics
Year 10 Information
Evening
❖ You will need to have or be willing to develop superior knowledge of algebraic manipulation to succeed in Mathematics Advanced.
❖ If you did not study 5.3 Mathematics in Years 9 and 10 you will need to learn several new concepts, prior to the start of Year 11.
❖ You might feel that your teacher moves quickly through topics. Some students may need to spend more time on mathematics than their other subjects.
Advanced Mathematics(continued)
Year 10 Information
Evening
❖ Common content introduced to the new HSC courses means that performance in Mathematics Standard will be able to be directly compared with Mathematics Advanced
❖ so any previous advice relating to ATAR scaling of HSC examinations is no longer likely to be applicable in choosing 2019 courses.
Scaling
Year 10 Information

Words of Wisdom❖ What happens in Year 10 is significant in determining your future pattern of
study.
❖ Choose a pattern of study that suits you best and that is recommended to you.
❖ If you enrol in Studies of Religion, 2 unit or 1 unit, you are expected to work to your potential or you will be asked to move to Catholic Studies.
❖ Studies of Religion 2 unit is an excellent option as it means that it can be part of your 10 units that contribute towards your ATAR in the HSC.
❖ Studies of Religion 1 unit means that you can have 11 units for HSC and it may contribute to your ATAR if you do not do as well as you expect in another subject. In that case the lowest unit is split with one unit combined with one unit of Studies of Religion.

Which Sciences can I do?● Content endorsed course (NON ATAR) subject Marine Studies or up to 6
units of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Investigating Science..
● It is not recommended to do 6 units of Science unless this has been discussed with Mr Kennedy (Head of Science) My email address is as follows: [email protected]
● The study of both Physics and Chemistry in Year 11 should be carefully considered because of both the workload and degree of difficulty of the courses.
● In the HSC year, students who choose not to continue with either Biology, Chemistry or Physics may elect to do Investigating Science in the HSC year if the timetable allows it. This means that students could study Investigating Science and another Science in the HSC year.

Other relevant informationWhen making subject selections check the entry requirements for the courses you may want to study at university. For example, check to see whether the entry requirements for a particular course have Chemistry or Physics as ‘assumed knowledge’ or ‘prerequisite’.
This will help to determine what Science is necessary to study in Years 11 and 12.
Websites such as UAC http://www.uac.edu.au/ may be helpful in working out university course requirements.
