Term 1
MrW's Computing Blog
In Term 1 we practised logging into our j2e accounts (now linked with our Google accounts).Year 3 used text effects to make calligrams ‐ words that look like what they mean.Year 4, 5 and 6 used and developed their skills to create Growth Mindset posters.
Term 2 ‐ LOGO progammingThis term, all year groups have been learning how to program in LOGO. We have been using j2code, part of the j2e toolkit, so children can access their work at home. Why not ask them to log in and have a look at what they have been up to? Or even give them some tips...

How you can helpReinforce (e)Safety and (e)Behaviour messages at home.Raise any (e)Safety or (e)Behaviour concerns with us.Encourage children to share with you what they are doing with j2e/Google Apps.
At home
Will your child or the family be getting a new tablet or phone, games console, or computer for Christmas? Or already have them? Here are a few questions to think about....
Who will they be communicating with? Do you know who they could possibly connect with? Have you talked about what to do with unwanted messages/contact?
Will you have family rules on when children can use devices? Meal times? Bedtime ‐ how close? (A recent piece of advice suggested TV viewing should be at least one hour from bedtime and tablet use, 2 hours) How will you ensure a balance of screen time and other activities, including physical and social?
What balance of study and leisure will you encourage? What games will you allow? How will you monitor/filter access to content?
Where will it live? Will you, for example keep chargers downstairs? Not kept in bedroom, especially after bedtime?

Safety
Term 3 will be all about Multimedia.Year 3 ‐ using tools in an art package and typing and formatting textYear 4 ‐ creating a hyperlinked website/eBookYear 5 and 6‐ creating a topic presentation in Prezi
In Term 4 we will be programming again. This time, we will be using Scratch to create animations and games by combining instruction blocks.
Pick up from school: Vodafone Digital ParentingOnline ‐‐> eSafety page on our website ‐‐> internetmatters.org ‐‐> childnet.com ‐‐> thinkuknow.co.uk ‐‐> commonsensemedia.org
What we're doingTeaching about Internet skills ‐ how to search safely and efficiently; what to do if you find content that you know is inappropriate. Using Google Apps and j2e ‐ online tools ‐ in a safe environment.
Children learn about safety and behaviour in PSHE lessons and at other times too. They are encouraged to think about both safety and behaviour in whatever circumstances they are in ‐ including when they are using digital technology and the Internet. The ideas are the same ‐ we apply our common sense, values, respect and responsibility in whatever we do, with integrity. There is no "virtual world" where things are completely different.
At school
Looking ahead...Look out for our new website in the new year ‐ highlights are: all blogs in same place; comprehensive parents' resources section; simpler menus; new fresh look. Please let us know what you think.
All Year 3 children were given a zig‐zag leaflet with the SMART rules for keeping safe online. These could be displayed at home as a reminder.
If your child got a new bike for Christmas, would you also get the related safety equipment: helmet and lights, and talk to them and teach them about road safety? What about technology?
