PARISH NEWS

From the Pastor’s Desk

Thank you very much for your support to the maintenance collection last weekend. We take up this collection the first weekend of each month and it is extremely helpful in maintaining our parish church, youth house, office, and the Notre Dame School. Whenever there's a maintenance project with the Notre Dame School, the parish and the school jointly share these maintenance costs because the parish and the school share the use of these spaces. A couple of things that your maintenance collection will be used for this summer: We are going to paint both the parish rectory and the school. We will also be landscaping the Hazel St side of the school so that when the students return the school looks beautiful for its ninetieth anniversary. We will be painting the downstairs cafeteria and making some other small improvements down there. We will add security screen doors to the rectory to increase security for Father Mike and me. We will automate the gates to the parish parking lot to increase security at night and during the Notre Dame School year. Our youth house across the street recently had several maintenance issues. There was a leak in the kitchen that required a new sink, pipes, and kitchen floor. A burst pipe in the basement that required new pipes and repairs to the ceiling. The youth house also requires much more work. We will paint the exterior and replace exterior wood that has dry rotted. We also installed a filtered water system to avoid buying bottled water. I wanted to thank you for all that you do to help us in the upkeep of our parish and it's buildings.

The Missionary Cooperative Appeal is an annual program in which missionaries from around the world speak at each parish. The goal of this appeal is to increase awareness of missionary of missionary work and to raise funds to help missionary organizations continue their evangelization efforts. In the Diocese of Sacramento, 50 different missions were selected this year to each speak at two parishes. Last year through genenrous denotations, we collected $392,880 for 51 missions. Next weekend , our parish will be visited by Fr. Nicholas Bulabuza with Diocese of Tabora, Africa. He will share with us their courageous evangelization efforts on behalf of the Catholic Church and give us an opportunity to support their work in the field. A second collection will be taken up following their presentation. Special envelopes will be provided for your convenience. Donations made by check should be payable to the parish. All funds collected throughout the Diocese will be equally divided among the 50 missionary organizations visiting the Diocese of Sacramento this year. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Friday’s morning mass is at 7:30am. We will resume the 8:30am Friday mass when school

returns in August.

Parish Bulletin Submissions: with summer vacation and shorter work days, during the summer season all bulletin information will be due by Monday at 12pm, starting Monday, June 4th thru August 20th. Please send your requests to [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

RCIA NEWS

What is the ceremony celebrated at the Sunday 10am Mass this week?

At the Sunday 10 a.m. Mass this week we are celebrating a liturgical rite for inquirers in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process called the Combined Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming. The Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens is for those preparing for Baptism. The Rite of Welcoming is for those who are either already baptized in another Christian tradition who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church, or those already baptized, but uncatechized Catholics who need to complete their sacraments and become disciples. Please continue to pray for these catechumens and candidates as they now enter into a period of deeper formation in the Christian Initiation process, which will prepare them to receive their sacraments. We invite you to take an active role in welcoming them and to be models of faith and Christian charity for them. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic, you are invited to call the office at 343-8741, check us out online at stjohnthebaptistchico.org, or email Lori Smith at [email protected] for more information. Inquirers are always welcome- it’s never too late to join us!

FORMED

All parishioners at St. John’s are encouraged to make use of our subscription to FORMED- the best Catholic content- all in one place! If you have not yet been to the site, go to stjohnthebaptist.formed.org and click “Register”. Enter your name, email address and desired passcode.

PUT YOUR FAITH INTO ACTION Who–The Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux,Vina, CA What –Become part of a team of volunteer docents How – Hands on training and quarterly workshops led by the monks to keep volunteers and staff updated Why –Share the story about the Monks of Vina paired with the Abbey’s rich cultural history that welcomes thousands of pilgrims annually Docent volunteers are an incredible asset to the abbey and serve as guides and educators about the history of the Abbey of New Clairvaux and its artifacts and buildings. This outdoor program provides an opportunity to learn and share the extraordinary history of the monastery and Cistercian monastic life. You will also learn about the local indigenous people who used to live in this area including its history and cultural significance and the history of the property. Volunteer Docents have the opportunity to develop a “sense of place” and appreciation for the area and play an important role in preserving and protecting the cultural resources of the Abbey of New Clairvaux, by sharing their 1-4gained knowledge with others. The volunteer docent interacts heavily with the public; therefore, he / she must be friendly, outgoing and comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
