Welcome tothe village directory

Hi everyone,

Happy new year and welcome to 2013, yes I know Christmas and New Year now seems a distant memory, but I hope it’s a great one.

2012 was certainly an eventful year, fi rst we had the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee where we showed the world our very British stiff upper lip by being determined to celebrate and enjoy ourselves whilst being soaked to the skin in persistent rain. Then came the Olympics with that amazing opening ceremony, followed by all those gold medals. I’m not a sporty person at all, other than winter sports, I’ve never really been that interested in watching it on tv, but this was something very diff erent, I was captivated. From my point of view, the whole event, combined with the Para Olympics was totally inspiring, I was proud to be British.

To fi nish off the year the Mayan Calendar was thought to predict the end of the world on the 21st December. What a relief to wake up on the 22nd and fi nd that everything and everyone was still as it should be! My husband put a positive spin on this, he believes that the end of the Mayan Calendar signifi es change, rather than the doom that others predicted. We’ve had enough doom and gloom recently, especially when it comes to the world’s fi nances, so lets hope that 2013 is a turning point and the beginning of a more prosperous, optimistic period of time.

Happy New Year to you all, I know it’s a bit late, but as you know there is no January Directory issue.

FebruaryBy Jackie Witcher - Tenterden &

District Horticultural Society

The Garden Shed

Well I hope you all got what you wanted for Christmas and not lumps of coal. I was very pleased that I had a few packs of gardening gloves, in my stocking, which I was very low on, but also a bit disappointed that there was no compost. Do you think people think that I am joking when I ask for compost? I think the problem with Christmas is, as you get older, that there is very little that you really want, well apart that is from a Aston Martin DB5, which I have always wanted, but apart from taking out another mortgage on the old house something tells me not to bother to put it on my Christmas present list. One thing I was given was a pack of tulip bulbs from Amsterdam called Sultans of Spring. The colours are pink/orange/yellow mix striped petals. These I put in immediately as we know that bulbs are generally planted September/October time. Not having any room left in the raised beds I have put them in a large tub, and planted them nice and deep. A general guide is three times the height of the bulb would be its depth for planting. After putting in a layer of compost I always add a thin layer of sand to bed the bulbs onto. This helps drainage and stops the likelihood of rotting. Now these bulbs, apparently, are not available in this

the gardencountry so I shall report back on their progress, that is if they are not drowned fi rst with all the rain we have been getting.

Whilst wearing a pair of lead boots and gripping my coat so its stayed on my body I did get to have one of my strolls around the garden and was amazed to see how many of the Spring bulbs were starting to show. Not only their leaves, the hyacinths actually had fl ower heads coming through. We’ve had fewer frosts than normal and I suppose the milder weather has forced them through. I hope they hold back a while, otherwise there shan’t be many for the Spring Show and that’s not till April!!

Today is the fi rst day of sunshine I have seen for a while. I’ve had a brief spat of ill health, shingles to be exact, which has put a hold on my gardening exploits. But today I shall endeavour to get out into the garden and get going on some chores. And boy is there a few to do. Apart from the leaves off the local trees deciding to land in my garden and mine alone, I have got to get to grips and prune the weeping pussy willow. Since I jacked it up a few years back it has now grown to about 8 foot tall!!! Which means using a step ladder to reach. Luckily I have this down to a fi ne art using a pair of long handled pruners. I prune from underneath where I can reach the majority of dead wood, anything above this I get husband to do.

The birds are already checking out the des res’s, and I am watching closely to see if a robin takes up the off er of the robin box, which we hung last year on the “Chinese” pergola. When we removed the boxes for cleaning last October we were quite happy top see that, apart from one, they had been used. The one that hadn’t been used had been in the same place for about three years, so we can only assume that it is in the wrong position. This has now been moved and we hope that this year it shall be occupied. Always when the eggs hatch I wait with anticipation to see the fl edglings fl y. But I’ve never have been that lucky. Yet my neighbour has managed to see it two or three times. I must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time!!

Coff ee time already, and today I am having the last slice of Guyanan Black Christmas Cake, which was a recipe from my favourite supermarkets freebee book. It contains ¼ bottle of rum and more in its soaking. Needless to say its very nice – or was! JW

After over 11 years in Kiln Drive, Rye Foreign, Rye, local charity ARRCC has now relocated to The

School Creative Centre in New Road, Rye. ARRCC was very fortunate to have the support of E.S.C.C., Rye & Winchelsea District Memorial Hospital, The league of Friends and a local trust providing funding for the substantial refurbishment costs. Chief Executive Grace O’Neill explained that this has been a challenge for everyone and 2 years of uncertainty, However, the move to The School has been a great success, our Members enjoy being a part of the Creative

Highbury HallAn Ideal Venue for all Sorts of ActivitiesHighbury Hall was built in the mid sixties by Tenterden Youth Club, a charity formed to provide Youth Facilities in the town. The Youth Club ran very succesfully for many years, but in recent times had declined (although the Pre-School continues to operate very happily),until in 2011 a new management committee was formed to revive the fortunes of the Youth Club and the Hall itself. During the course of 2012 the Committee embarked on a massive fund raising drive and huge refurbishment programme. The major part of these works has now been completed, with support from many local businesses, charities and individuals. Highbury Hall is now an excellent community facility with a brand new kitchen and refurbished toilets, an ideal venue for all sorts of activities. Following consultation with Tenterden Youth Forum

and various organisations such as Ashford Borough Council we will be relaunching the Youth Club as a Youth Cafe facility. The Friends of Highbury Hall are a group of people who are helping to raise funds to complete the refurbishment programme. To this end a regular Craft Market will be held at the Hall on the 2nd Saturday of the month, starting in March 2013. The markets will feature a variety of local artists, craftsmen and food producers and will be open from 10am to 4pm.Refreshments will be available all day and any profi ts made from organising these events will go to Tenterden Youth Club for the Youth Cafe and refurbishment programme. The dates of the market for 2013 are :-

9th March, 13th April, 11th May, 8th June, 13th July, 10th August, 14th September, 12th October, 9th November, 14th December

Hello there, my name is Trish Feely and I’m proud to announce I am offi cially Barking Mad, Not just by name…!

Barking Mad has been established for 12years and is a great alternative to kennels or housesitting for dogs and now available in this area; we select the ideal host family from our portfolio of trusted dog lovers, all of whom meet our extremely high standards. Accommodation is in a family home environment with one to one dog care, where daily routines are maintained for your dog. Barking Mad off ers an exceptional service to dogs and their owners.

Prior to taking on Barking Mad franchise I had worked in the catering and hospitality industry. I’ve been lucky I had the chance to travel to many countries around the world to work and was able to experience other nationalities and cultures.

I was fi rst introduced to Barking Mad as a customer when I needed care for my dog Sam. I love the concept and the high standard of care that Sam receives from his host family/s when I am away. I too became a host family and love to see visiting dogs from time to time unfortunately I’m unable to host now, I am now lucky enough to be a part of this brilliant concept and to work from home with my Labrador Sam helping -well he’s more of a sleeping partner really! I know how vital it is to fi nd good dog care for our four legged family member or it can ruin your time away with worry.

If you love dogs and would like to enjoy the company of a visiting dog than please contact me. It’s fl exible and our hosts fi nd it enjoyable as they have all the doggie fun! All visiting dogs come with food, bedding etc, so there is no cost implication to the host. It is fully supported and if there are any problems I am always on hand to step in.

If you are interested in using our services or would like to know more about becoming a host, I would love to hear from you (details below)

How to choose fabricsBefore buying fabric, ask for a swatch or, even better, borrow or buy a length of fabric that can be draped at the window or placed over a sofa or cushion. It is invaluable to see how the fabric looks in situ, at different times of the day and night. Ask these questions before you start:• How wide is the fabric? The

wider it is, the better the value, and the less sewing will be required. 140cm is average.

• How heavy is it? Heavier fabrics are usually too bulky for small projects, while lighter fabrics usually wear more quickly.

• How durable is it? Fabric is divided into categories depending on whether it will be subjected to light, general or heavy domestic use.

• Is it washable? And, if so, has it been pre-shrunk?

• If it is patterned, what size is the repeat? Large patterns require more fabric so that you can match the repeats.

Types of fabricFabrics are composed of natural or synthetic fibres, or blends of them, and made

using a wide variety of weaves.

FIBRESCotton can range from lightweight muslin to heavy canvas. It is the most commonly used fabric for home furnishings as it dyes and prints well, and is easy to care for.

Linen has a lovely drape and lustre, is durable, but has a tendency to crease (hence is often mixed with other fibres).

Nylon, or polyamide, is tough and resists abrasion, but tends to produce static electricity.

Polyester is a very strong synthetic fibre that mixes well with other fibres to produce versatile fabrics. It can withstand high temperatures and frequent washing.

Silk comes in intense colours and has an attractive, lustrous surface. Not as hard-wearing as other fibres.

Viscose is made from wood pulp. It is hard-wearing and durable.

Wool is breathable, warm and naturally water-resistant. Available in a wide range of thicknesses and textures, it varies from heavy sheep’s wool to fine cashmere. It will felt if washed at a high temperature.

WEAVESBouclé has a looped pile.Corduroy features pile in stripes that may be narrow or wide.Damasks contrast matt and shiny areas of pattern and are usually rather traditional in style.Jacquards feature a complex, raised pattern.Moiré is a water-mark pattern, often found on silks.Plain weaves have a smooth surface.Satin is heavy with a lustrous surface, usually made from silk or polyester.Twill weave produces diagonal or zig zag lines on the surface. Denim is a heavy-cotton twill, for example.Velvet may be made from a variety of fibres and features a luxurious, soft pile.

What to use whereUPHOLSTERY• Hard-wearing, tightly woven

fabrics are best for most upholstery. Medium-to heavy-weight cottons and cotton mixes, linen mixes and wools are all good, conventional choices, while corduroy, denim and low-pile velvet are

Choosing fabrics for the homePatterned, textured or plain, subtle or spectacular, fabrics can transform a room. Our guide will help you sort the silks from the synthetics and the cottons from the corduroys, while giving you the lowdown on what to use where.

interesting as well as usable. • Avoid deep piles, which may

become crushed, and loose or loopy weaves, which are likely to snag.

• Bold motifs should usually be centred on sofa or chair backs. You will need to buy more fabric to ensure everything fits in the right place.

LOOSE COVERS• Choose a fabric that is

washable and substantial enough to hold its shape yet soft enough to be comfortable: medium-weight cottons, linens or blends, or light wools are all ideal.

CURTAINS• Curtains can be made of

practically any fabric, from cotton and linen to velvet, silk or wool.

• As well as the conventional fabrics, consider unusual ones such as blankets,

tweed, fleece, mohair, canvas or madras, or perhaps a sari, a length of vintage embroidery or a lovely chintz quilt.

• Very thick, heavy fabrics will be too bulky for small window openings.

• Sheer fabrics will not hold a crisp fold and will allow light through.

CUSHIONS• Choose almost

any fabric, within reason.

• You could use remnants from fabric used elsewhere in the room, or choose complementary patterns and colours in a completely different fabric.

• Use expensive fabrics, as you’ll need such a small

amount (use cheaper fabric for the back).

BED AND TABLE LINEN• Light to medium weight

cottons, linens and cotton or linen blends are best. Avoid pure linen if you don’t like ironing.

• Loose, textured and pile weaves are impractical for these purposes.

• Choose fabrics that will withstand frequent washing • For outdoor and children’s dining, oilcloth is ideal.

Satay Vegetable SkewersServes 4 Ready in 30 minutes

If you are short on time but

still want a fl avoursome

supper then try these delicious

vegetable kebabs with a lovely

spicy peanut sauce and spring

onion noodles. For non-veggie

kebabs replace the aubergine

with cubes of lean pork or

chicken fi llet and cook for

15-20 minutes until the meat

is cooked through and lightly

charred.

Ingredients:• 100g crunchy peanut butter• 25g creamed coconut,

chopped• 1/2 tsp chilli powder• 1 garlic clove peeled and

crushed• 4 tbsp soy sauce• 3 small peppers (red, green and

yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces

• 4 thick slices of aubergine• 1 large red onion, peeled and

cut into slim wedges• 3 tbsp sesame oil• 4 nests fi ne egg noodles• 4 spring onions, trimmed and

fi nely sliced

Tip:If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavy-based shallow frying and add a little oil.

Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary.

Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges.

Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

In the best interests of the children…In another of our regular series on legal matters, this month Laura Hails, Chartered Legal Executive at Pengelly & Rylands Solicitors, talks about children issues

Each year thousands of children experience the separation of their parents. We realise that many of our clients will be unsure as to how best to manage their separation whilst considering the best interests of their children. Divorce and separation generates a large level of stress in a person’s life and it is likely that children will have feelings about divorce and separation which will be very diff erent from your own.

Many parents are able to agree between them how they share contact of the children and parents are able to agree any contact pattern that suits the needs of the children.

When considering children matters, we refer to the Children Act 1989. The fi rst priority is the welfare of the children and there is also a checklist of factors that have to be considered, which include, but are not limited to, the child’s age, sex, background, wishes and feelings and physical, emotional and educational needs.

Unfortunately some parents will have diffi culties in reaching an amicable agreement. If you cannot agree with whom they should live or how much contact they have, you may wish to seek advice.

We are committed to a helpful, non-confrontational approach, to take the confl ict out of family disputes and to ensure the children maintain a healthy, loving relationship with both parents. As a Member of Resolution, we are mindful of the fact that during the separation process,

Laura Hails, Chartered Legal Executive at Pengelly & Rylands

there will be a wide range of emotions and we therefore deal with matters in a conciliatory approach to achieve a solution based on the needs of the whole family, particularly what is in the best interests of the children.

If you have any queries about children issues or any other family matter, please telephone me on 01580 762248 and I will advise you of the best route available to you in your particular circumstances.

Racism

Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream ‘racism‛ these days.

A customer asked… “In what aisle could I fi nd the Irish sausage?”

The clerk asks…”Are you Irish?”

The guy, clearly offended says… “Yes I am, but let me ask you something.

“If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian?

Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?

Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?

Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?

Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?”

The clerk says…”No,I probably wouldn‛t.”

The guy says…”Well then, because I asked for Irish sausage… “why did you ask me if I‛m Irish?”

The clerk replied…”Because you‛re in Builders Warehouse”…

After several years spent researching her family history, Elaine - who lives in Kent - had discovered that her ancestors were land-owning farmers from the Richmond district of Yorkshire. She was eager to see where they had lived and died so she chose a pretty cottage in the hamlet of Easby as an ideal base from which to explore the area. Elaine had focused her research on a branch of the Dixon family, tracing the line back to the year 1695, and she was now intent on fi lling any gaps in her knowledge. She had been unable to fi nd out where her great, great, great grandparents were buried but thanks to an extraordinary co-incidence she discovered the answer lay only a short stroll away. A book left out on display in the village church gave the exact location of their graves in the churchyard.Elaine will never know what – or who - led to this uncanny revelation but she believes that luck and instinct can play a pivotal role in family research. Her interest in the subject began as a child, when her grandmother told her stories about older relatives. “Once grandma died, I found I was the only person in the family

with that knowledge. I wanted to know more, so I sent off for my grandma’s birth certifi cate. Although I’m not very good with the internet I looked up www.ancestry.co.uk and signed up for two weeks’ free trial.”Elaine was determined to follow the female line of her family although she knew it would be diffi cult because the surnames would not be consistent. Unable to progress beyond her great, great grandmother Mary, she worked on a hunch inspired by the census.“One of her children had the Christian name ‘Dixon’ and I thought that was unusual,” says Elaine. “I’d read in a magazine that mothers often christened children with their maiden names so the name would stay in the family.”When she entered ‘Mary Dixon’ into an online search, she was rewarded with information that enabled her to trace her roots back to the 17th century. Elaine’s top tips for starting your own research are to talk to older members of your family and write down every detail, then start to work backwards by requesting copies of birth, marriage and death certifi cates from the

appropriate local records offi ces. Valuable information can be obtained from ancestry search magazines and websites such as www.ancestry.co.uk and www.fi ndagrave.com. She has also found the staff at records offi ces particularly helpful. The message boards of online networks such as www.curiousfox.com can be useful but Elaine warns that where the search concerns a common surname, names should be double checked against the census or other offi cial records in order to ensure that the person in question belongs to the right family. Tracking down family records can be challenging, but for Elaine it has opened up a wealth of new opportunities.“If I hadn’t done this I would never have used a computer. I’ve also found that my interest in ancestry has given me wider interest in history. I can honestly say it has opened up a whole new life for me.”

Life BeginsTaking a trip to your family’s past by Claudia Leaf

When Elaine Thomas booked a week’s holiday in a remote cottage in Yorkshire, she had no idea that she was about to solve a mystery.
