Seventeen‐year‐old Tamari Kamoe of Nadi made history during the Air Pacific, Adidas Jacks of Fiji Open Tennis Championship at Denarau yesterday. She won the event after beating the top‐ranked players from around the region. Tennis coach, Naga Reddy, says Kamoe is one of Fiji’s top juniors. She had represented Fiji at the Pacific Games in Noumea. “She toured New Zealand and Australia for the last four years, playing in the junior championships and she has also been playing in the world ranking junior tournaments,” Reddy said. “She was ranked number two and she won the final beating number, three, New Caledonian player Assaya Trimari. “This win is great news for Tennis Fiji. It’s been over 20 years when a local girl won the tournament which was back in 1988. “It is a great achievement for a young local girl to win the championship against Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonian teams,” Reddy said. He said for the last two years, New Caledonia dominated the championship.
Australian top seed

MARK Shanahan of Australia is the top seede to win the men's single in Jack's of Fiji/Air Pacific Fiji Open Tennis tournament which starts at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club today. Shanahan won the event four years ago and is expected to be in top form against players from New Caledonia, New Zealand, the US, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Saipan and Fiji.
Homeboy Chris Hargrove who is the number one seeded player in the Western Pacific Tennis tournament last week is expected to give Shanahan a good time.
Shanahan has been practising with world number three Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open in recent years.
PNG's Marcia Tere-Apisah who is the highest World Junior ranked player in the Pacific is tipped to win the women's category. Fiji's Tarani Kamoe and Annie Shannon will be Tere-Apisah's main challengers at the tournament which starts today.
More than 125 players have registered to be part of the tournament.
Fiji Tennis secretary John Shannon said they were expecting exciting games for the next couple of days."This is a great opportunity to watch the locals against their overseas counterparts in all the different event groups," Shannon said.
The tournament starts at 8am today and ends on Sunday.

NATIONAL tennis rep Tarani Kamoe created history by becoming the first local in 24 years to win the women's singles title at the Fiji Open Tennis Championship at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club yesterday.
This is the 105th year of the event and Fiji Tennis Association president Naga Reddy said no local had won the main title of the event since 1988.
"We are very proud of her (Kamoe's) achievement," Reddy said.
"No local had won the title since 1988 and she (Kamoe) is our national rep and participated at the Pacific Games in New Caledonia last year and has done well in this tournament," he said.
The sixth former of Lautoka Central College beat Assayah Trimari of New Caledonia by two sets to one.
The 17-year old Nadi lass lost the first set 4-6 but came back to win the remaining two sets 6-3 and 6-2.
"This goes to show Fiji is coming up in the sport and Tarani is doing wonders at this age and I believe she will get better in years to come.
"This is also a result of the development work the Fiji Tennis Association has been doing over the past few years," Reddy said.
Meanwhile, the men's singles was won by Australia's Mark Shanahan who beat Brandon Vescio.
The number one seed lost the first set 6-7 but came back to win the remaining two sets 6-2 and 6-2.
John Ganderton beat Mattieu 6-4, 7-5 to win the Men's A singles title while Samuelle Bull beat Trimari 7-6, 6-1 to win the Women's A singles title.
The Men's 45 singles title was won by Hugh Robinson who beat David Rouse 7-6 and 6-2 in the final yesterday.
Shekhar Balram beat Jacob Morris to win the Mens Social singles title.
The doubles and mixed competition was still underway when this edition went to press.
