In July 2007, the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference announced the creation of the Sergeant York Trophy which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four Ohio Valley Conference schools located in the state of Tennessee – Austin Peay State University, University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee State University and Tennessee Technological University.

The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief’s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972.

In a close race, Tennessee State and Austin Peay shared the inaugural award, finishing with identical 2-1 records in 2007. Tennessee State took the trophy home thanks to a one-point victory in overtime over the Governors; that game was decided by a block extra point by NFL First Round Draft Pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Tigers repeated as champions in 2008, winning all three of its Sgt. York games.

The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2nd battalion, 328th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Following the war, York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. (located in north central Tennessee, 55 miles

northeast of Cookeville) where he dedicated his life to improving education and facilitating educational opportunities for children in the state of Tennessee. In 1927, he established the Alvin C. York Institute after spending several years raising money for the school which opened as a private institution. That school was established, in part, to provide educational opportunities denied to the boys and girls of Fentress Country. In 1937, the Institute became a state special school after an appeal to the Tennessee State Legislature. The school, located in Jamestown, Tenn., is still in operation today.

York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and the foundation which he helped establish in 1920 – The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation – was dormant for many years. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York’s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York’s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor.

After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy.

The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee.

Tennessee State University Football

CoaChes Tennessee sTaTe vs. Florida a&m (sepT. 16, 2017)

Rod Reed enters his eighth season at the helm of the Tennes-see State football program after being named head coach on December 18, 2009. He served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator during the 2009 season.

Reed experienced immediate success as a head coach, leading the Tigers to a win in his debut game, 27-14, over Alabama A&M on Sept. 4, 2010 in the John Merritt Classic. He also broke an eight-game losing streak to Florida A&M, downing the Rattlers, 29-18, in the Atlanta Classic. Reed coached six players to All-OVC Teams including safety Eugene Clifford who also was a Sports Network, Phil Steele and BOXTOROW All-American.

The Tigers increased their win total in their second season under Reed and finished the 2011 season on a hot streak, winning four of their last six games. The stretch included a, 42-40, upset win at No. 19 ranked Tennessee Tech on Oct. 15. Reed produced even more All-OVC players in year two, as seven made postseason squads. Two more defenders garnered All-American honors under Reed’s tutelage in linebacker Rico Council and Joseph Wylie. He also helped Lamar Divens and Sidney Tarver ink NFL contracts.

The Big Blue continued its success in 2012 by rattling off seven straight victories to open the season. The Tigers finished the year with an 8-3 record, its best since 2001. The performance earned TSU HBCU Program of the Year honors by HBCU Hud-dle. Several players earned postseason accolades including running back Trabis Ward who was named to the College Sports All-American Team after running for 1,460 yards and 15 touchdowns. Three more Tigers were Sheridan All-Americans including Sherman Carter who signed an NFL deal with fellow offensive lineman Rogers Gaines following suit.

Reed turned in his finest season to date in 2013, as the Tigers finished 10-4 and won a FCS Playoff Game for the first time since 1986. It capped an impressive run in which Reed im-proved his club’s win total by at least two in each of his first four campaigns. TSU won its first HBCU National Championship since 1982 and the team’s shutout win over Butler in the first round of the playoffs was the first victory for the OVC in post-season play in nearly 30 years. A school record 12 Tigers were chosen to the league’s all-conference teams at season’s end and Kadeem Edwards (143rd) and Demetrius Rhaney (250th) were selected in the NFL Draft.

In 2014, Reed’s defense ranked inside the top-10 for the third

straight season. Middle linebacker Nick Thrasher tallied 128 stops on the season, which was sixth-most in a single-season in school history and the highest total for a Tiger since 1991. Thrasher also moved up to second-place in tackles in the TSU record book over the course of the season, finishing with 358. Quarterback Mike German threw for 2,846 yards on the year, helping him break the 34 year old school-mark with 8,664 career yards.

After breaking a streak of three consecutive non-losing seasons in 2015, the Tigers bounced back to finish 7-4 in 2016. TSU re-emerged as one of the top teams in the OVC under Reed with nine all-conference players and six All-Americans. The offense led the OVC in points scored and finished second in total offense. Cornerback Ezra Robinson and offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker both earned First Team All-OVC selections, All-American status and were invited to play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl. The duo also participated in the NFL combine and signed free agent contracts.

Reed has coached a total of 28 All-Americans and 62 All-OVC Players in his seven seasons as a head coach and has staked a 43-37 record.

He began coaching at TSU in 2003 and served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. At the conclusion of the season in which Reed returned to the TSU sideline, the Tigers led the OVC in total defense for the first time in school history. The defense accomplished the same feat in 2008 finishing at the top of the OVC in total defense.

A keen recruiter as an assistant, Reed was responsible for bring-ing several notable key players into the TSU program. Reed is noted for recruiting Javarris Williams (2009 seven-round draft pick, Kansas City Chiefs), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (2008 first-round draft pick, Arizona Cardinals), Shaun Richardson, Lamar Divens (Baltimore Ravens, 2008) and Corneilus Lewis. He has also coached All-America and professional player, Ja-mar Landrom (Jacksonville Jaguars).

Reed was a four-year letter winner for the TSU Tigers from 1984 - 1988. He capped off his career by being named Sher-idan All-America his senior season. He set the Tiger record for career tackles from his linebacker slot and in 1987, he set the single season record for tackles with 197. He helped lead the Tigers to the second round of the 1986 Division I-AA playoffs and was selected as Defensive MVP in 1987 and 1988.Following completion of his bachelor’s degree, Reed entered the coaching profession. He held positions at Prairie View A&M (Linebackers, 2001), Bethune-Cookman University (Lineback-ers, 92-95), and Seabreeze High School (DC, 96-00) in Daytona Beach, Fla. Within those positions he coached five first-team all-conference linebackers and a pair of All-Americans.

Before coming to TSU, Reed previously coached at East Texas

Baptist College (00-03) in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He served as defensive coordinator for East Texas Baptist, which launched its football program during the 2000 season.

The 2002 Texas Baptist defense ranked second in their confer-ence in scoring defense and third in rushing defense. The team did not allow points in either the first or third periods through the first eight games in 2002.

Reed is the son of Robert Reed, Jr., an All-America offensive guard for the Tigers in 1963 and 1964 who later played profes-sionally for the Washington Redskins.

Reed is the university’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes rep-resentative and in 2009 he participated in the NCAA Football Coaches Academy. He and his wife, Tamika, are the parents of four children, Terry, Takara, Briah, and Marcel.

Junior Offensive Tackle Christian Morris- On beating an FBS Team“First of all, this is a huge win. We’re an FCS team, and we came out there and beat an FBS team. They were very talented, but we handled business.”

- On the offensive line“The Offensive line played phenomenal tonight. We had a couple mishaps, but we played phenomenal.”

Senior Linebacker Chris Collins- On winning the opener“It means a lot to the team. We felt like we wanted to start off the season strong. We feel like we played a great defensive game. Offen-sively, we played well too. I feel like we played a great game and now we just have to get ready for Jackson State.”

- On beating an FBS Team“I don’t think many people outside of us thought we would win, but it’s good to prove people wrong. In our heart, we felt like we’re the best, so we expect to do things like that.”

Sophomore Running Back Seth Rowland- On the win“It means a lot to us. Coming into this game, I wanted to do it for the alumni and for our school. The alumni are what started this. Before the game, I tweeted, ‘keep the tradition alive,’ and that’s what we wanted to do.”

- On scoring a touchdown“That was my first touchdown so I was really excited, but I have to give the credit to Sabree (Curtis) for getting us down there in the first place, and the line for blocking as well as they did. Treon (Harris) had a great drive, and it just played out for us.”

Freshman Safety Vincent Sellers- On getting the win“It feels good. It’s been a long camp, and we’ve been working very hard. Coach (Garry) Fisher has been on us every single day and it got us better. I just want to thank God because it’s a true blessing.”

- On winning his first college game“I have my mom and dad here supporting me. They’ve been wait-ing to see me play my first college game. It was a total team effort. (Laquarius) Cook taught me everything I know right now, and we’re just going to keep pushing from here on.

Defensive Coordinator Garry Fisher- On what he liked from the defense“They just fought. That was the biggest thing. They fought hard all night. No matter what the situation was, they rose up to the occa-sion. We gave up some yards and they got into the red zone a couple times, but we were able to hold them to field goals, which was huge for us tonight.”

- On bending but not breaking“I thought we tackled well. They hit us with a couple of plays. Their passing attack was on point, so they found some creases in our de-fense, and they drove down there, but we work on red zone defense every day. We were able to hold them to field goals and come up with a big interception.”

- On the defense coming up big“We take pride as a team. No matter how the game goes, we have to find a way to stop the other team’s offense. Both defenses played well but at the end of the night, our defense outplayed theirs.”

Senior Wide Receiver Patrick Smith- On winning in Memphis“It’s very important. It being a rivalry game and me being from Mem-phis, you never want to come back home and lose a game whether it’s conference or non-conference. It was very big for us to come out here and get a win. I’m proud of my team. The defense really stepped up for us. The offense wasn’t really clicking like how we expected, but we know it’s early in the season.”

- On the punt return for a touchdown“It was a designed left return. As soon as I caught the ball I saw a lot of white jerseys on the left, so I knew it was going to be a good return. As soon as I started to run, I just took advantage of it and took it to the endzone.”

Junior Safety Laquarius Cook- On being 2-0“It’s big. The team came out playing hard and kept our confidence up. The win was good for us.”

- On winning with room for improvement“It lets us know that if we get to hitting on all cylinders, that we’ll be running and we’ll be unstoppable.”

Senior Defensive Lineman Jason Morrow- On being 2-0“It’s a great feeling to be 2-0, but it’s still the beginning of the season. We still have a long road ahead of us. We can’t look too far ahead in the season.”

- On the positives of the defense“We just kept fighting. That’s one thing Coach Fisher told us. You don’t quit. If everything is going wrong, you still don’t quit. You don’t hold your head down. You just keep fighting, and that’s what we did to-night, and that’s a big reason why we won tonight.

Sophomore Wide Receiver Steven Newbold- On what the team needs to work on this week“This is a big chance for us to come together as a team. We need to take care of all of the mistakes we made in the last game and that starts in the meeting room and film sessions. We need to get things corrected for us to be able to dominate next week.”

- On having a chance to play in Florida“It feels good getting a chance to go back to my home state. But as far as the hurricanes, I feel everything will be good. You just have to keep the faith.”

- On the keys to success“We need to come out fast and finish stronger. And again we just have to cut out the mistakes that we had.”

Senior Cornerback Terrell Bonds- On trying to return to the lineup“I look forward to have a good week of practice. I am glad that we do get to go down to Florida and play. This will be my last game at home, so I am working as hard as I can to get back onto the field and play.”

- On the importance of a game in Florida“I have only had a couple games in Florida during my career, so this game is very important. I know a lot of people and family members are planning on coming to the game, so I do not want to let them down.”

Sophomore Dajour Nesbeth- On what the team learned at the Southern Heritage Classic“No matter who your opponent is they are always going to come out and be ready to play. You cannot let teams be that close and give them an opportunity at the end. I believe we needed this, so we can see that nothing is guaranteed. No matter who your opponent is, you have to come out and be ready to go.”

- On having a chance to play in his home state“Playing in Tampa will be great. I am way up here in Ten-nessee and now my family can come out and see me play a game. So I can go out and put on a show for them and try and bring home a win to Tennessee.”

- On family dealing with the hurricanes“I talked to my parents quite a bit and everything is all right. I kept tracking the storm myself and felt everything should be all right.”

- On wishes his family would bring to the game“I would love to have some home cooking, because I need it. I feel it would taste so good after a win. I would want curry chicken. I love curry chicken.”

Freshman Safety Vincent Sellers- On the take away from the Southern Heritage Classic“I never played in a game like that before, so it was new to me. I have never been so excited in a game. But we just need to get to taking things game-by-game. We will go down to Tampa, play as hard as have been playing and come out the same we did in the first two games.”

- On playing in front of a big crowd“I looked up once at the board and saw that there were 47,000-plus people. It was my first time playing in front of a crowd like that and it was a great experience.”

- On playing in Florida“They had some issues with the hurricanes and I prayed for them every single day. It is a blessing to go back down there where all my friends and family have a chance to come see and support me. It’s just a great feeling to go back down there and show them how much better I have gotten.”

Game 3 • Tennessee sTaTe vs. Florida a&m preGame press

Rod Reed Quotes- On his team’s performance in the Southern Heritage Classic“I didn’t think we played particularly well in that game against Jackson State. We knew going into that game, it be-ing a rivalry game and it being the Southern Heritage Classic, that it was going to be a tough out for us. We talked about trying to play well early, which we didn’t, and we allowed them to hang around with us a little bit. They made it a ball game at the end and it came down to a last-second kick. I think our kids learned from that. Not to take anything away from Jackson State. They were a big, physical football team on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, they got us out of our comfort zone a little bit early until we settled in, so we’ve got our work cut out for us. The good thing is we came out with the ‘w’ and relatively healthy. We’ve got to move on to the next one, which is against Florida A&M.”

- On Junior Center Thomas Burton“He’s out. He won’t be back for a couple more weeks. Hope-fully we’ll have him back for the UT Martin game. We’ve got to let our training staff and the doctors be the judge on that one. We want to make sure he’s 100 percent healed when he comes back. We’ll continue to move and shuffle the offensive line around a little bit. I think Coach (Russ) Ehrenfeld and the offensive staff have done a really good job of coaching those guys up. We’ve got some guys playing some different posi-tions. It’s a good thing to have that versatility.”

- On playing in front of big crowds“That’s what you play college football for. You want to be in that type of environment. The crowd Saturday was electric. With as close as the game was with the momentum shifting several times in that game, I think our kids feed off of that. We’re used to playing in nice venues and big venues, so it won’t affect us going down to Tampa. It is great to play in a big-time environment in front of that kind of crowd. It’s great for the kids and the fans, and it’s great visibility for your program.”

- On the play of Patrick Smith in the return game“Any time Pat (Smith) touches the ball, he has the opportu-nity to be electric for us. We just have to do a good job of blocking for him and giving him better opportunities. He’s a special kid, and we’ve got to find a way to get him the foot-ball more.”

- On facing FAMU “I thought they played well against Texas Southern. They went out there and really physically took it to them in all three phases. They ran into an Arkansas team, which is a pretty good football team. They’ve been a top 25 team the last couple of years, so when you go play in an environment like that against a team like that, you’re a little bit over-matched. It’s similar to us playing Jackson State after they played TCU. We knew we saw some things on film that let us know they would compete well. FAMU is probably coming in saying ok we’re back at our level, we’ve got to compete at a high level. They understand that they’re playing a well-coached team, and we understand that we’re playing a well-coached team. I don’t expect anything other than it being a great ball game. We’ve got to clean some things up from last week. We’ve got to be more physical on the offensive line, and defensively, we have to continue to play at a high clip.”
