Noting VirginiaTidbits

Virginia started the season with three consecu-tive wins. Last year, they went 19-16 and ad-vanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tour-nament (WNIT) quarterfinals.

Senior Ariana Moorer led the Cavaliers in scoring (9.7 points per game) and assists (3.1 per game) in 2010-11. She was voted the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Sixth Player of the Year

Ataira Franklin, an ACC All-Freshman Team selec-tion, led the ACC in 3-point field goal percentage in 2010-11. She connected on 43-of-90 treys (48 percent) while averaging 9.4 points per game.

This marks the first time Lady Vol Coach Pat Sum-mitt will not go up against longtime coaching rival Debbie Ryan at Virginia. The Lady Vols and the Cavs played some epic games in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s and Summitt and Ryan engaged in “chess move” basketball.

Joanne Boyle is in her first season on the side-lines for Virginia, after six seasons at California (2005-11) and three seasons at Richmond (2002-05). This is the first time a Summitt-coached team has faced a Boyle squad.

Our Last Meeting with UVa The Tennessee Lady Vols overcame sluggish de-

fensive play with accurate shooting against a speedy Virginia team to capture an 85-73 win at Thompson-Boling Arena on Nov. 18, 2010.

Strong shooting overcame the defensive woes as the Lady Vols shot 53.1 percent against the Cava-liers in the first half.

UT senior Angie Bjorklund, who scored 24 points in a win at Virginia in 2009, made six three-point-ers and scored 26 points while playing all 40 min-utes in her final appearance against UVa.

Also assisting in the Orange scoring effort were Shekinna Stricklen (15 points) and rookie Meighan Simmons (12 points).

Ariana Moorer led Virginia with 24 points, Pauli-sha Kellum added 18 and Telia McCall had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Virginia got off to a quick start, hitting its first eight shots and used a 9-0 run to take a 17-9 lead with 15:45 in the first half.

Tennessee switched from their typical man-to-man defense to a zone to slow the Cavaliers down and rally back.

A 3-point basket by Stricklen tied the game at 32 with 6:42 in the first half, and the Lady Vols held a 41-39 lead at halftime.

Bjorklund opened the second half with a 3-point-er, launching an 8-0 run that gave Tennessee a 49-39 lead with 15:36 left. Virginia didn’t score until a pair of free throws by Ataira Franklin with 14:39 to go.

The Lady Vols pushed the margin to as many as 18 points -- enough to sustain a late run by Vir-ginia.

The 4-1-1 on Virginia In the last outing for Virginia before facing Ten-

nessee, defense was the name of the game as the Cavaliers won its third-consecutive contest, 67-41, over High Point on Wed., Nov. 16 at John Paul Jones Arena.

Senior guard Ariana Moorer was the game’s high-scorer as she finished with 14 points and six re-bounds. Sophomore forward Jazmin Pitts scored in double figures for the third-straight game, chip-ping in 13 points and grabbing four boards.

Through three contests of 2011-12, Virginia’s op-ponents are averaging just 42.3 points per game. Virginia out-rebounded High Point, 50-33, and has now out-rebounded each of its three oppo-nents in 2011-12.

Key to Victory? Tennessee has to dominate the boards and

capitalize on second chance points. Last year in Knoxville, the Lady Vols barely won the battle of the glass, 35-34, over the Cavaliers.

UT is coming off of a seven rebound deficit to ACC sister school Miami and needs to stop the trend versus Virginia on Sunday.

Hoops HeadlinesOklahoma State Tragedy

Coach Pat Summitt comments:“The University of Tennessee Lady Vol bas-ketball family is shocked and deeply sad-dened at the tragic loss of Oklahoma State head coach Kurt Budke, assistant Miranda Serna and the other victims of the plane crash. “I’ve known Kurt for many years and enjoyed watching his success all along the way. He was a great guy and a wonderful family man. He had such a great passion for teaching and coach-ing the game of women’s basketball. Obvi-ously, Miranda was a highly-respected assistant coach and had a promising career ahead of her. It is just so terribly sad that we had to lose them.

“Tennessee will be keeping Oklahoma State, the family and friends of Kurt and Miranda in our thoughts and prayers. Our hearts go out to them.”

Lady Vol sophomore guard Meighan Simmons was alerted to the OSU tragedy by her brother, Ryan, who is a freshman outside linebacker for the Cowboys.

official “We Back Pat” T-shirt. Shirts are available at The UT Bookstore and Stokely Athletics Center stores, as well as area Food City and Walgreens. The shirts are $10, with $4.25 from every shirt go-ing to research.

In a pre-game ceremony at the Baylor game, checks will be presented to Alzheimer’s Ten-nessee and UT Medical Center, as the `We Back Pat’ T-shirts have already generated more than $150,000 in donations. The proceeds will help di-rectly impact those living with the disease in the state of Tennessee.

TV Update The Lady Vols will benefit from the NBA lockout. Tennessee’s televised game at Rutgers has been

changed from ESPNU to ESPN on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J.

Courting Kamiko Lady Vol junior guard Kamiko Williams is making

good progress in rehabbing her left knee. She tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on

July 7 while playing in the Pilot Rocky Top Bas-ketball League and had reconstructive surgery on July 22.

This week, she started participating in non-con-tact, non-live drills.

On the Court Pride in Board Play

Coach Pat Summitt’s mantra of defense and boards has been a staple of her nearly four de-cades of coaching.

UT started out the 2011-12 regular season haul-ing in 54 boards against Pepperdine while the Waves snagged 34.

Tennessee fell off the rebounding wagon in the very next game as Miami controlled the glass, collecting 45 boards to the Lady Vols’ 38 total re-bounds. That was a vast improvement over UT’s 13-rebound deficit at halftime to the Hurricanes.

In 37 games last season, Tennessee was out-rebounded only twice -- by Georgia Tech, 37-36 and vs. Kentucky in the SEC Tournament final, 46-41.

Overall, the Lady Vols held a +12.4 rebounding advantage, 46.3 to 33.9, in 2010-11.

100 Point Games Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the

century mark 76 times. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven

games to lead the NCAA. UT has a record of 73-3 all-time in 100-point

games and a 51-0 record when hitting the cen-tury mark at Thompson-Boling Arena.

In Overtime Tennessee is 28-13 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04

with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime losing to Georgia, 68-66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, DePaul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66.

It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99.

UT’s 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime.

UT’s most recent OT affair was a 82-72 win over Stanford on Dec. 19, 2010, at home.

Lady Vols Own All-Time Wins Mark Tennessee is the all-time wins leader in the

NCAA with 1,173 victories. The next closest pro-gram all-time in terms of wins is Louisiana Tech, which owns a 1,000-212 record (entering the 2011-12 season). The Lady Vols boast a 1,172-255-2 (.827) all-time record.

Staffers Have, But Never a Player No former Lady Vol who has joined the col-

legiate coaching ranks has ever beaten Head Coach Pat Summitt.

Head Coach Pat SummittAmazing Summitt Numbers

Pat Summitt’s teams have faced 164 opponents from 35 conferences in 1,272 total games.

Forty-six percent of her 1,272 total games have been played versus ranked teams (592 total games against ranked opponents) with 431 vic-tories versus ranked opponents

One hundred sixty-one all-time Lady Vols have contributed to 1,073 wins.

Seventy-two percent of those all-time players have gone on to be decorated as Olympians, All-Americans, USA National Team members, All-SEC performers, Academic All-Americans, Academic All-SEC, etc.

AARP Recognizes Summitt AARP The Magazine has announced the recipi-

ents of its 10th annual Inspire Awards. Each year the Inspire Awards pay tribute to outstanding individuals who inspire others to action through their innovative thinking, passion and persever-ance.

individual should exhibit the qualities of cour-age, perseverance, grace, and strength in sport achievement.

Zaharias’ spirit and zest for life, as well as her cour-age, strength, and achievement, are the qualities for which this award is named. The Babe’s fight to overcome life-threatening cancer and then return to the winner’s circle in women’s professional golf has withstood the test of time.

Going StreakingStreaking into 2011-12

The Lady Vols will carry a 38-game home court winning streak into the game against Baylor. It is the third longest in Lady Vol history. From Feb. 21, 1976 vs. Cumberland (a 90-42 win) until los-ing on Mar. 10, 1979 vs. Old Dominion (74-72), UT won 37 consecutive games. Tennessee’s best home court winning streak was 69 consecutive games from Feb. 2, 1991 to Jan. 6, 1996.

Lady Vol Streaks The Lady Vols last loss at home was against Duke,

62-54, on Feb. 16, 2009, since then UT has won 38 home games.

The last time UT lost on the road was on Dec. 14, 2010 at Baylor. Since then, UT has won eight road games.

The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Notre Dame, 73-59, in the 2011 NCAA Elite 8 game on Mar. 28, 2011. Since that time, UT has not played on a neutral court.

Shekinna Has It Going On Lady Vol senior Shekinna Stricklen has the na-

tion’s longest starting streak entering the 2011-12 season.

Stricklen has started 106 consecutive games and is joined in the elite club by a pair of players on UT opponent rosters.

DePaul senior forward Keisha Hampton has start-ed 104 consecutive games while Miami’s (Fla.) Shenise Johnson has been in the starting five for 101 consecutive games.

Miami traveled to Knoxville for the State Farm TipOff on Tues., Nov. 15. UT and DePaul meet in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 11 in the Mag-gie Dixon Classic.

TBA - The Place to PlayRocky Top, You’ll Always Be...

Home, sweet home, to me.... On good ole Rocky Top, Tennessee has already entertained the home fans to a scoring bonanza this season av-eraging 90.5 ppg on The Summitt while holding the opponents to 66.5 ppg. No wonder the Lady Vols average a nation leading 12,149 fans per game.

Toughest Place To Play The University of Tennessee’s Thompson-Boling

Arena is still the toughest women’s basketball arena in the nation to secure a win. The Lady Vols have fashioned a 343-20 all-time record on “The Summitt” for a 94.49 winning percentage since the doors were opened in 1987.

Welcome to “The Summitt” The playing court in the Thompson-Boling Arena

on the University of Tennessee campus donned a new look for the 2005-06 season.

After Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt passed Dean Smith for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 win over Purdue on Mar.

22, 2005, UT named the TBA court, “The Sum-mitt.”

The floor had a complete overhaul with perma-nent logos of both the Lady Vols and Vols paint-ed directly in front of the scorer’s table; the free throw lanes were painted orange with “SEC” re-versed out; the giant jump circle/mid-court TEN-NESSEE was given a new brighter color scheme, and “The Summitt,” Coach Summitt’s actual sig-nature adorns the sidelines opposite the team benches.

300 Wins in TBA Tennessee recorded its 300th win in Thompson-

Boling Arena when the Lady Vols defeated the Stanford Cardinal, 79-69 OT on Dec. 21, 2008.

Seven years earlier, UT grabbed its 200th TBA win over the University of Southern California on Nov. 18, 2001, 106-66.

UT has now amassed a 343-20 (.945) record since the Orange and White moved into the Thomp-son-Boling Arena to start the 1987-88 season 25 years ago.

 Along the way, the Lady Vols have produced 10 flawless home records in 1988-89 (15-0), 1991-92 (14-0), 1992-93 (13-0), 1993-94 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (16-0), 1998-99 (14-0), 2000-01 (15-0), 2002-03 (16-0), 2009-10 (17-0) and 2010-11 (17-0).

UT also registered a former NCAA record 69-game home court-winning streak from Feb. 1, 1991 thru Jan. 2, 1996.

Just 20 TBA Losses The Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. Since moving to Thompson-Boling Arena for the

1987-88 campaign, UT has lost two games in one season just seven times.

UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural 1987-88 campaign, 1996-97, 1999-00, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2008-09 seasons.

 The 20 all-time losses at TBA have come at the hands of just 10 teams: Virginia (2008), Florida (2006), LSU (2008, 2006), Duke (2009, 2007, 2004), Connecticut (2004, 2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988).

Home Sweet Home The victory over Georgia on Jan. 31, 2005, was

the Lady Vols 400th home win since Pat Summitt took over as head coach in 1974.

Summitt has won 91.6 percent of all home games in 38 years producing a 494-45 overall record.

Home losses (in the Summitt era) include: six in Alumni Gym from 1974-76; 19 in Stokely Athlet-ics Center from 1976-87; and 20 in Thompson-Boling Arena.

Elite CompanyRookie Starts

A true rookie got a starting nod on the opening day of the 2011-12 season.

When Coach Pat Summitt started freshman Ariel Massengale against Pepperdine in the opening game of the 2011-12 season, it marked only the 14th time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very first game at Tennessee -- out of a total of 161 all-time Lady Vols.

The list of opening day rookie starters: Taber Spani, 2009, Glory Johnson and Shekinna Strick-len, 2008, Angie Bjorklund, 2007, Candace Park-er, 2005, Shyra Ely 2001, Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique

Holdsclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.

The Nod With Ariel Massengale getting the opening day

start against Pepperdine, she became the 61st rookie all-time to earn a starting assignment at UT. Last season, Meighan Simmons, a 5-9 point guard from Cibolo, Texas, became the 60th rook-ie all-time to earn a starting assignment at Ten-nessee.

The previous year, rookie Kamiko Williams (59th all-time) started against Arkansas while her class-mate and fellow rookie Taber Spani, became the 13th frosh to start her very first game at UT and the 58th rookie overall.

In 2008-09, a record number of players – five – were called on to start for the Lady Vols as rook-ies: Shekinna Stricklen (starter number 53), Glory Johnson (number 54), Briana Bass (55), Alicia Manning (56) and Kelley Cain (57) all earned starting assignments.

Angie Bjorklund became the 52nd all-time Lady Vol to start during her freshman season –she started 30 of 38 games.

Previously, Cait McMahan earned a start at point guard versus Louisiana Tech during her freshman season.

Prior to Cait’s starting nod, then-redshirt fresh-man Candace Parker played and started in all 36 games her rookie season in 2005-06.

A season earlier, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt liked what she saw out of the 2004-05 rookie class as two players earned starting nods during the season. Nicky Anosike played in all 35 games with 25 starting assignments and Alexis Horn-buckle played in all 35 games with 21 starts. This duo became the 48th and 49th rookies all-time to earn starting assignments at UT as rookies.

BREAKING IT DOWN

2011-12 Lineup Combinations• Tennessee has utilized one starting lineup

for the 2011-12 season. During the 2010-11 season, Tennessee employed 11 different starting lineups. Four of the starting five combos were one and done.

TENNESSEE VS. VIRGINIA NOV. 20, 2011

Glory -- Maybe This Season? It’s a fact that Tennessee has produced some of

the greatest players ever in women’s collegiate basketball.

It’s a little known fact that there has only been one double-figure rebounder in the history of the program -- Olympian and Kodak All-Ameri-can Patricia Roberts.

Roberts hauled in 14.2 rpg (467 total) in her only season as a Lady Vol in 1976-77. She also claimed scoring honors with 29.9 ppg (987 points) in her single season on The Hill.

In 2006-07, Candace Parker came the closest to a double-figure rebounding average but had to settle for 9.8 rpg.

Last season, Glory Johnson flirted with the elu-sive double-digit and managed 9.7 rpg.

Johnson started out the year with 13 boards against Pepperdine.

Johnson Could be the Fourth UT senior Glory Johnson needs just 115 rebounds

to pass the 1,000 rebound plateau. Only three other Lady Vols have managed to

grab 1,000 rebounds -- Chamique Holdsclaw (1,295), Sheila Frost (1,038) and Tamika Catchings (1,004). Six other UT players snagged over 900 career rebounds.

Lady Vol HonoreesStricklen Honored as AP A-A

Lady Vol senior guard Shekinna Stricklen was se-lected as a First Team Associated Press Preseason All-American.

Joining Stricklen on the five player team were Baylor’s Brittney Griner, Notre Dame’s Skylar Dig-gins, Stanford’s Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Mi-ami’s Shenise Johnson.

Tennessee and Stricklen will face each of those teams this season.

Johnson Named a Lowe’s Nominee Tennessee senior forward Glory Johnson has

been named one of 30 women’s basketball nominees for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, presented to student-athletes who excel on and off the field.

Johnson is one of three nominees from the SEC. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete

must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence -community, classroom, character and competition. The CLASS award is an acro-nym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and focuses on the total student-athlete.

“Glory is an ideal candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award,” Head Coach Pat Summitt said, “blending the perfect balance of excellence in the classroom, on the court and in the commu-nity. She is our first player ever to graduate in three years and that shows her dedication and discipline toward her academics.”

Johnson captured All-SEC First Team honors in 2010-11 and was a finalist for the 2011 State Farm All-America Team.

A Master of Science in Communication candi-date, Johnson completed her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Programs with a Con-centration in Global Studies and a Specialization in Global Politics and Economy in only three years.

GAME 1 UT vs. Pepperdine // Nov. 13, 2011

GAME 2 UT vs. Miami // Nov. 15, 2011

KNOXVILLE -- It took over two minutes for the first shot to finally fall. Pepperdine never led, but kept within two baskets until an 8-0 run capped by Meighan Simmons’ jumper with 10:32 left in the first half gave Tennessee a 20-9 lead.

Summitt played her entire bench in the first half, including freshmen Cierra Burdick and Isabelle Harrison, and the Tennessee reserves scored 20 points.

Glory Johnson led the Lady Vols with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Shekinna Stricklen and Simmons each had 13 points, Taber Spani contributed 11 points and Briana Bass had 10.

Pepperdine’s tough defense came at a cost. The Waves had 14 personal fouls in the first half, though the Lady Vols were uncharacteristically sloppy at the charity stripe, making just two of six foul shots before halftime.

Still, it forced Rousseau to go deep into her bench, which was responsible for just four points in the first half and 19 total. Jazmine Jackson had 17 points for the Waves, who shot 28.4 percent to the Lady Vols’ 49.2 percent shooting.

Tennessee outrebounded Pepperdine 54-34, but couldn’t turn them into points. The Lady Vols gained control of the game with their 20 fast-break points and by sinking eight of their 10 3-point baskets in the second half.

Summitt gave a starting nod to point guard Ariel Massengale, making her just the 14th Lady Vol to start her very first career game. The coach was so convinced of Massengale’s talent and frustrated by a lack of a bona fide point guard last season that she dubbed Mas-sengale a starter back in March.

Massengale sat for more than 13 minutes in the first half after picking up two fouls and finished with just one field goal, but had five assists to just one turnover and came up with two steals and three rebounds in 20 minutes.

KNOXVILLE - Junior Taber Spani hit a game-high four three-pointers, but none bigger than the one she drained from the top of the key as the shot clock expired with 6:36 remaining in the game. The swish ignited an 11-0 Tennessee run and ultimately helped lift the No. 3 Tennessee women’s basketball team (2-0) to a 92-76 victory over No. 7 Miami (1-1) on Tuesday eve-ning at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The pair of top ten teams were tied, 42-42, at halftime before Tennessee scored the second half’s first nine points and 18 of the first 22 to take a 60-46 lead.

But the Hurricanes came storming back, eventually getting as close as 73-68. That’s when Spani saved her best for her last shot.

After her three-pointer, the Lady Vols forced a shot clock violation on the other end, and freshman Isabelle Harrison scored her first points of the evening off of on an offensive rebound.

Tennessee went on to score 19 of the game’s final 27 points to notch its second win in as many tries this season.

After Miami’s Riquna Williams went off for 17 first-half points, UT limited her to just seven in the second. Although she finished with a game-high 24 points, the Lady Vols made her use 28 shot attempts to get there.

Tennessee had five players in double-figures. Joining Spani were Meighan Simmons (18), Johnson (16), Shekinna Stricklen (15) and Ariel Massengale (11). Johnson also chipped in a team-high nine rebounds, while Massengale led the game with the second-highest assist total by a UT freshman all-time with nine.

In the first half, it was the Hurricanes that got off to a strong start. After Baugh scored the game’s opening bucket on a layup, Miami went on a 10-2 run for its largest lead of the contest, 10-4.

The Hurricanes made four of their first six three-point attempts, and led until a try from Simmons put the Lady Vols back ahead, 18-16, with 13:41 left in the first half.

After UM’s Stefanie Yderstorm responded with a three-pointer of her own complemented by a Krystal Saunders layup, the Lady Vols scored eight consecutive points to take a 26-21 lead with 10:21 left in the first half and would not trail again.

UT matched its biggest lead of the first 20 minutes, 38-31, on a jumper from Spani, who led the team with 13 first-half points. UM closed the first half with an 11-4 run to tie the score, 42-42.
