A Letter from the PresidentSalvete omnes,

Our upcoming school year looks promising for the TJCL. Our state had a great turnout at Nationals and I hope to see even more people attend next year. We are working hard on increasing our membership with the hope of bringing several new chapters to State Convention. The convention itself is facing some exciting new changes that I hope everyone will come to see. This is a time of new beginning for all chapters. The start of a new school year opens possibilities for all chapters to increase membership, community service, and other activities. I look forward to hearing about your triumphs. Valete, Jill Neblett 2003-2004 NJCL President

"Tennessee Torch" Wins First Place in the Nation The "Tennessee Torch" won first place among all state JCL publications at the NJCL Convention in Texas. The winning editors, pictured at left, were Daniel Taylor and Tara Daniel of Rossview High School. Congratulations, Daniel and Tara!

Rossview High School graduate and former TJCL President Charlie Bergen was awarded the $1000 Red and Rhea Miller Scholarship at the convention in Texas. Charlie is now a freshman at Princeton University. Read his interview below to find out more.

Interview with Charlie Bergen, Legendary

Scholarship Winner 1. What scholarship did you receive?

The Red and Rhea Miller Scholarship 2. What was your favorite area of interest in JCL?

Anything that doesn't involve nasty words like volitive and hortatory.

3. How has JCL helped you throughout the years in developing your future?

I've met all my best friends through JCL, my greatest mentors have been JCL teachers and leaders, JCL has helped pay for my college...the list goes on.

4. What college do you plan to attend and what is your expected major?

I will be attending Princeton University with the intention of double majoring in History and Classics.

5. Do you have any final words of advice for the younger JCLers?

Have fun. Academics have always been my focus, but there is something in JCL for everyone, if you are willing to look. Also, never stop trying new things, in JCL and in life. One never knows what rewards he or she may stumble upon.

NLE Perfect Papers Announced As another great competition for each Latin scholar to enter, there is one held in very high regard known best in its three-

letter acronym, the NLE. The National Latin Exam is a 40 question multiple-choice exam offered under the joint sponsorship of' the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. There are different levels of difficulty for those students enrolled in Latin with varying questions in grammar, mythology and other subjects.

Tennessee always seems to do very well in this contest, withholding the honor of numbers of perfect papers every year. This year there were many students to get the honor of having a perfect paper, a task that is not always so easily done. Each of those students with a perfect paper or gold medal had their name printed in the National Torch. We praise their efforts and wish them the best of luck for next years exam! N. B. For a complete listing, see the 2003 Fall "Torch:U.S." issue. Also note that registration materials for the 2004 NLE are available at www.nle.org/.

Interview with Meghan Robb, Community Service Award Winner 1. What kind of community service projects did you and your school do? The main project that the Latin students have been involved in this past year did not begin as a Latin club venture. I became involved in the after-school program at Hollywood Elementary through church and began asking students in my classes to volunteer. Several students, most of them Latin scholars, began working at the school. This just goes to show that White Station Latin scholars feel the need to go beyond scholarly achievement and contribute their time and talents to the community. The tutoring involved structured "class time" twice a week, during which Hollywood teachers stayed after school to teach course material. On the other days of the week, tutors performed a myriad of tasks: basic homework help, reading to the younger students, supervising art projects, listening to older students read. The children and teachers at Hollywood welcomed us immediately with open arms, and the Latin students came to love Hollywood students as we watched them grow. In addition to the tutoring program, our JCL chapter asked for donations of traditional Roman bread from the local grocery store to donate to dedicated medical professionals in the Memphis area. JCLers delivered the loaves, carrying scrolls with the words “ ‘Gratias Tibi Ago’ for your dedicated work for the citizens of Memphis” written on them. 2. What encouraged you to volunteer so many hours in the name of JCL? When I was faced with the task of gathering high school students who would be enthusiastic about serving their community, my fellow Latin scholars immediately came to mind. Just as we work hard in immersing ourselves in a culture and language that many see as dead, we banded together to create an environment of encouragement for Hollywood students. We are planning to continue the tutoring program next year, and the JCL branch will hopefully participate in a "language fair" of sorts, that will bring members of White Station's language honor societies to Hollywood during one month this fall. 3. How do you feel about JCL, as an organization for the Classics, emphasizing community service and creating publicity? The Junior Classical League is an organization mainly concerned with the study of ancient languages and culture. We cannot, however, afford to ignore the problems of today's world and our communities. We all owe a debt to our societies, to cultivate and refine the education system and keep the love of learning alive. 4. How can other schools that are interested in volunteering and helping the community participate in doing so just as your school did? Oh, it is so much easier than you think! There are always organizations that are starving for support. To get involved with an elementary school like we did, call your city school board and request a list of struggling schools. Pick an elementary school close to the school. Introduce your organization, and inquire about an after-school program. If the school does have an after-school organization, give the principal a brief summary of what you would like to do at the school. Most administrators will jump at the chance to have a group of enthusiastic and intelligent high school students provide role models for their students. Then, if you have chosen dedicated and responsible tutors, the program is self-sustaining and you can focus on expanding to new levels. To find tutors or volunteers to help in any program, be fearless! Many high school students have the desire to contribute and put community service on their resumes, but have no idea how to find an outlet for that desire. Simply make announcements at club meetings. Connections always help, and in building a program like this, I have made several new friends throughout my high school. A lot of what seems so intimidating is the detail. Organizing a volunteer opportunity is not hard, but it may be a little time-consuming at first. If anyone is interested in starting a program like this at a local elementary school, I would love for him or her to call me or email me. I am currently trying to help other high schools in Memphis start the same program, so I can offer plenty of advice and feedback. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 901-685-6401.

Interview with DJ Johnson, newly elected NJCL Second VP from TN

1. How long have you been participating with JCL? I began my freshman year when everything was so new to me and I wasn’t aware of the wonderful world of Latin. I was just a young boy of 14 and my Latin 1 teacher, Miss Ryder, told me about certamen, I feel in love with that, and therefore my attendance at Latin convention (it was at Rhodes so it wasn’t as adventurous as usual) was cinched. 2. How did it feel to be elected second VP? It was awesome. I felt so good because I had not only now touched people in my state, but people all over the country. It was a wonderful to know that people were entrusting you with such an awesome responsibility (that I'm finding is not as glamorous as it looks). 3. What sort of support did TN give you in the election process? TN was the COOLEST!!! They campaigned for me, helped me with my speech, passed out stickers; I really think that everyone being so positive told people from other states that they could trust me. 4. What are you hoping to do to better the National Junior Classical League through your term of office? My biggest plan is to make the office of 2nd VP less of the "slack-off" office. I think that through the community service award, coupled with serious National Latin Week Events, I can make the office more respected. Also, a general uplift of spirit that spills over into more convention events, like certamen, olympika, ludi, and outside events like publicity and publications. 5. What are your favorite parts of convention? My favorite part is the Saturday after the procession; I’m high off spirit and then there is BBQ. I'm from Memphis, so you know I love BBQ!!! I also like That’s Entertainment - I’m

excited about being in it next year for the officer skit. 6. What colleges are you looking at for your future? Vanderbilt of course, and then there is Yale and University of Chicago (reaches, really). I'd really be happy at Tulane or University of Michigan. 7. Any final words of advice to those considering running for any type of JCL office? It will be the most amazing experience of your life. To be such a large part of the 2nd largest junior organization in the country--wow, it's just great. I'm looking forward to everything. My advice is to go for it!!! Meet as many people as you can, they'll remember you; be yourself and don't be afraid to be funny!
