Welcome...A good year for Foodservice?From RH Hall’s perspective this year has been very exciting and a proud year, with it being our 40th Anniversary and with us also having finalised our next 5-year vision and growth plan, which has now been rolled out throughout the entire business. We have ambitious plans but are confident that we can deliver and continue to build on brand RH Hall and become the best and most trusted caterers’ choice for foodservice equipment solutions Nationwide. That’s our Vision.

In general, and during the past 6 months, we have experienced some tough trading times with still a lot of uncertainty around where Brexit will lead and take us all. No doubt all will start to become clearer over the next few weeks and provide us all with much needed knowledge and understanding as to our country’s position and future prosperity, in order for us to take such changes on board, re shape, gear up and position our businesses onto the right tracks to go positively forward into 2019.

Despite this backdrop we have, however, experienced some good development and growth in many sectors that remain resilient and buoyant - in particular, the grab and go markets, especially coffee shops. Fortunately, for RH Hall, our exclusive brands are a perfect fit for this market place and as such they have performed rather well this year, especially Sharp commercial microwave ovens, Maestrowave products, Smeg ovens, Simply Stainless range, as well as our factory bespoke products.

In terms of the choice and quality of eat out and eat in establishments that we now have in the UK, these have to be some of the very best available anywhere in the World. The foodservice market has massively developed over the past 10 years and from a recent Catering Insight Eat Out Report it seems set to continue, all of which has to be good news for all involved in the foodservice business and supply services going forward. With the extra busy Christmas trade now firmly upon us we are fully geared up to meet such demand in terms of dedicated customer support and extra stock holding of all the best sellers in anticipation of high demand. We also continue to be proactive and find ways to stimulate extra business and as such look at our exclusive Christmas promotion. Not only have we some extremely attractive prices available, but we are also offering Christmas hampers and gift vouchers based on invoicing spend. KRIS’ INDUSTRY UPDATE

Well it’s a little choppy out there to say the least! Day to day business is definitely a bit of a battle and confidence could certainly be better in the marketplace, but I’m pleased to confirm that we crack on as usual, weather any storms and continue to move positively ahead – we must not forget that as a nation we will always like to go out to eat and drink! Especially moving into this busy time of year.Going forward our business pipeline is looking very promising, we’re working with our partners on some great joint business opportunities and together have won several new contracts/tenders over the last 6 months. I can’t mention them all here, but one that springs to mind (and we are really looking forward to working with the team) is TUCO, having recently won both the Equipment Tender and the Innovative Food and Drink Concepts Tender. Visit from down under! 40th Anniversary Associations

Our Australian partners, Simply Stainless, sent over Ian Belton and Ben Chrystal to visit us from their HQ in Perth, Western Australia, to impart their extensive knowledge of this great range that we exclusively stock in the UK & Eire. During their week with us, Ian and Ben delivered the Simply Stainless University training program to 15 of our staff, and I’m glad to say all 15 passed the course with flying colours, with Team RH Hall almost beating the Australians on the time challenge!

Also covered was the new and improved Kitchen Designer software – an invaluable (and free) tool to help customers plan their own kitchen.

CASE STUDY

Having seen the potential in Maestrowave’s Combi Chef 7, Chris Neale and RH Hall’s Foodservice Solutions Division arranged for a demonstration of this highly flexible oven at the City Hospital Cityside Restaurant. The demonstration, by Janet Caveney, was tailored to a pre-proposed menu advised by the Trust, which featured frozen cook-to-order products including: fish fingers, mini pizzas, sausage rolls, filled Paninis, chips and burgers. Chris Neale and Chief Dietetic Technician, Nicola Strawther, saw the Combi Chef 7 in action and agreed it would be ideal for the new food offer they were planning to launch into the Children’s Wards at Nottingham University Hospitals. The all-day menu from breakfast, through lunch, snacks and evening meals could then be offered with more variety, appeal and greater flexibility, and reduce food waste.

An order followed for two Maestrowave Combi Chef 7 ovens with another two to follow once menus were finalised and products were available on site.

Chris Neale, Assistant Head of Facilities, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, made the initial enquiry with RH Hall’s Area Sales Manager, Simon Parry, whilst on the company’s stand at the 2018 Hospital Caterers’ Conference back in April this year.

The RH Hall Foodservice Solutions team spent a whole day in the hospital’s CPU testing the products and developing programmes to heat the food in the quantities required. This work was carried out alongside dietician Nicola, whose input was invaluable for validating the results. Finally, both ovens were set up with 25 cooking programs covering all areas of the new hot food menu: croissants and omelette’s for breakfast; burgers and pizza for lunch, toasties and chips for anytime snacks.

Chris Neale comments, “The oven gives a flexible service to our patients, particularly those who may have missed a meal or are struggling to eat at mealtimes and fancy more of a snack item such as a toastie. The ovens complement the current main menu service we provide, it has also allowed us to improve the range of accompaniments we can offer such as garlic bread with a lasagne which wasn’t possible before but is a popular choice

with the young people – this makes the meal experience much better for our patients and in turn we hope will improve their nutritional care”.

Ovens have gone into the Children’s Ward kitchens at the Trust’s Queen’s Medical Centre, with others going into the Teenage Cancer Trust at City campus. RH Hall is also assisting with “training the trainers” – instructing those who will operate the ovens and deliver the food so that all the operation can be done correctly and efficiently and will continue to support the project, including on-going menu development and staff training to ensure the Combi Chef 7’s consistently meet client expectations.

The Ovens were supplied through the hospital’s service partner BBCS Limited with the Business Development Manager, Neil Hockey, praising the input from RH Hall, “It’s good to have a supplier who is willing to take a product to the customer and do this type of extensive work to support them.” Neil added, “We have a great working relationship with both RH Hall and the NUH Hospital Trust”.

RH Hall would also like to add congratulations to Chris Neale for the award of Hospital Caterers’ Association Caterer of the Year 2018.

REGIONAL & SECTOR UPDATE

The summer months have proved to be a mixed bag – we have been busy with opportunities for the future, whilst purchases from existing clients have been a bit more sporadic than expected. Fortunately, we have seen good starts to a couple of new National Accounts and while they will take time to grow and mature, we anticipate that they should produce sound and solid business in the months and years to come.

We continue to work in partnership with food companies to develop further opportunities. We’ve carried out more work with Kepak on their Rustlers range as they continue to grow their presence in the hot-food-to-go vending market. New relationships have been forged with Abbeydale Foods, working with their food technologists as they develop their convenience food offer using our refrigerated display and cooking equipment to launch into the foodservice industry.

I think we’d all agree that these are challenging times, but I’m pleased to report that overall sales for the south are holding up well and I’d like to thank you all for your continued support. What is really pleasing are the number of quotations that we are doing and whilst not all of them are, as yet, converted into orders, I’d like to extend a big thank you for giving us the opportunity to quote and be involved.

As always, a strong working relationship with my dealers is important as this builds trust and forms long term working partnership, with both parties looking towards delivering to the same goal. And we have, by working together, completed a number of successful ventures this year - delivering what was requested by the customer, with excellent results… achieved by working closely with dealers and where needed bringing in

Another busy quarter for the area – we’ve been working in partnership with BBCS, completing a great project with Nottingham University Hospitals and further west, in Wales, we have installed a kitchen into a derelict bank for Criccieth TV using the Simply Stainless designer tool.

I attended the LACA Exhibition with WV Howe where we showcased the Maestrowave Combi Chef 7 and Smeg ALFA43XUK oven alongside a

Focus remains on building these relationships and on that note can I just take this opportunity to thank all my dealers for their support and wish them all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

In addition, the delivery of the first of our newly designed Mobile Carts from our bespoke solutions division for the foodservice industry, having been developed in conjunction with Big Al’s, offer a new line of business for the future, which is really exciting. We are constantly looking to seek out these new opportunities and we would love to hear from you if you think we can be of assistance on any projects.

The factory is going from strength to strength. Our new high power laser and press brake have been fully operational for a year now and are proving to have been great investments.

We are working with various food companies to develop a range of modular style mobile carts for stadiums and service station forecourts, including the Big Al’s project – the first of these will be in place very soon. We have also developed two new stand designs for the latest, updated version of

6 Burner Oven Range kindly loaned to us by Blue Seal. We also supported Penistone Catering at the Local Flavours Exhibition in Norfolk by providing the equipment for the demonstration kitchen including again, a Smeg Commercial Bake-off oven and portable Induction Hob whilst showcasing a Crown Verity BBQ on stand.

our New Covent Garden Soup Servers, one for the UK and one for the European market – roll out of these is due to start in the next couple of weeks.

Our design to manufacturing fluidity has greatly improved and we are now running a much more effient and streamlined service.

Finally, I’m very pleased to report that we have some massive potential business for the beginning of 2019 – watch this space for details in the next issue of Update!

Other major activity is the relaunch of the New Covent Garden Soup Server. The system features both new hardware and improved software. We have secured many trials with different clients, which are proving to be extremely successful. We are exploring other locations to site the machine, such as universities, hospital restaurants, farm shops and office buildings. And finally, we are embarking on a new initiative with the iWave® system – watch this space!

By the time you read this our Christmas Promotion will be in full swing. We really are offering competitive pricing on all of our Key Brands and selected manufacturers. Now’s the time to collect as many Hampers or Amazon Vouchers as you can in the run up to Christmas.

Customer Service continues to offer our customers a high level of service. We have a new addition to the team, Kathryn Tofte, who joins our Trade Accounts Division to support and provide our trade customers with all of their customer service requirements and we wish her well with her new role. Spares have been busy maintaining stock levels to meet customers’ requirements and support our

The market has been fairly slow over the last few months with Brexit fuelling some uncertainty, so we have been drilling down on all areas of the business and on analysis there are still a great number of opportunities out there, the pipeline looks very healthy and we continue to work very closely with our customer base. And as we approach Christmas there is plenty of activity on the go, the new promotion has kicked-in and we’ve sent out lots of gifts and vouchers already! We also

have our Clearance List with special pricing on leading brand products.

Internally we’ve made some changes. Each region now has its own dedicated co-ordinator – our sales team are a real strength and we want to maximise the support we offer, I believe it is industry leading and this will go further to enhance it.

In our Public Sector work we have recently won two TUCO contracts, which we are looking forward to fulfilling.

Following the launch of our Catering Essentials Christmas promotion, we’re feeling festive and hoping we have brought some holiday cheer to our trade dealers. After talking to our customers, we really have tried to make this our best offer yet.

As we move into 2019, I’m keen to find out more about exactly what our customers want and need us to provide, so look out for our surveys in the new year. If you have

Joshua BatesJosh joined the team in 2015 as a Service Apprentice. Josh became a full-time Engineer in August 2018 having completed his BTech Electrical & Mechanical Training course with distinction and he is also in the final stages of his NVQ Level 3, on course to complete six months early!

Harrison WheelerHarrison joined us in 2015 also as a Service Apprentice. He has just attained his NVQ Level 3 Electrical & Mechanical qualification. Harrison will shortly be taking up a role as a Service Engineer, supporting all colleagues both in service and throughout the company.

I had known Ray, Kris and indeed Ron Hall, the founder, for a number of years before they asked me to join, having previously worked for Microwave Marketing (Panasonic), Apuro and Sharp UK. What I liked was how they were always investing to ensure that RH Hall continued to grow. This is still very much the case today.

CHRISTMAS 2018 DELIVERY ARRANGEMENTS We will close on Friday 21st December at 5:30pm and re-open Wednesday 2nd January at 8:30am.

Last collection for standard delivery will be 2pm Thursday 20th December for Friday 21st December. Special deliveries for Saturday 22nd and Christmas Eve can be arranged on request for orders placed before 2pm on 21st December.

It’s obviously best to plan ahead to avoid any last minute panics, but if the unlikely happens…please liaise with our Sales Team for information on premium delivery services and stock availability.
