TEMWA: WHO ARE WE?

Founded in 2003 by Jo Hook and Sophie Guise after a visit to Malawi, Temwa is a small,

independent charity born out of love and a need to help people less fortunate than ourselves.

Temwa works with a community of 40,000 people in Nkhata Bay region in Northern Malawi. This region is exceptionally hard-to-reach, with only one road which is impassable in the rainy

season. Other large organisations refused to work there due to difficulties in communication and

transport.Temwa trains villagers to grow a variety of

vegetables and fruit to improve the nutrition in their diet. We plant trees to combat the

devastating effects of deforestation. We run HIV testing clinics and work to combat the stigma surrounding those who test positive. We build school blocks and fund students through their education. But crucially, these projects are all

driven by the communities we serve. Since fundraising first began in 2003, Temwa is privileged to have been supported by the

incredible generosity of the art and music scene. Previous events include a 1920’s gala dinner and a street art auction at the Houses of Parliament. We aim to create fundraising events which are spectacular and ground-breaking as well as

profitable.
