RABBI’S REFLECTIONS

It’s the Economy, Stupid

Being that it’s an election season, you’ve heard the expression, “It’s the economy, stupid,” (coined by Presi-dent Clinton’s strategist James Car-ville against the first President Bush.) People vote their pocket-books unless they feel physically threatened. Why do we vote based on the economy? We want to live a certain lifestyle and feel security in our daily lives, which for most of us aren’t routinely affected by far-away concerns like Iraq and Iran, but are affected by the economy. Actually, faith plays a large role (which is why

both President Obama and Donald Trump want us to believe them.) Comparing current and past crises illustrates the point. After 9/11, President Bush told us (in a larger context) to shop. The 2001 re-cession was short-lived, partly due to consumers believing in our country. The 1990-1991 recession also was short. In between, po-tential recessions never happened. Why? In the ‘90's, when Presi-dent Clinton, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, Deputy Secretary Lawrence Summers, and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Green-

span spoke, people believed them. President Bush, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and Federal Re-serve Chairman Ben Bernanke spoke, and we didn’t trust them. Also, this recession affected the financial system, not technology or another sector of the econo-my. In the last recession, plenty of people didn’t trust President Obama, Secretary Paulson, and Chairman Bernanke; plus this crisis involved our homes, probably the single biggest foundation of our American dream. The president is cheerleader-in-chief. If we feel sure of the people around him, we trust the system. Paulson, respected as Goldman Sachs’ CEO, for much of the public never grew into his Treasury position. Former Commerce Under Secretary David Rothkopf wrote of Paulson announcing Bear Stearns’ rescue, “he looked like a deer caught in the headlights;” he didn’t imbue confidence. Bernanke didn’t inspire the same trust as his predecessor; deservedly or not is a different issue. Since financial institutions cried, we worried more. All of this shows that perception is more real than reality, with trust a major factor. A company’s collapse, e.g. Bear Stearns’, or potential crumble, e.g. banks and mortgage companies, is as much about our lack of faith as about their cash need. Credit, from the Latin root, credo, means “I be-lieve.” With a crash, other institutions no longer extend-ed credit, traded, or left assets with them. Oppenheimer analyst Meredith Whitney wrote, “A company is only as solvent as the perception of its solvency.” We used to believe that banks and mortgage lenders would recover their money, that people who incurred debts would pay. Now we even question banks. In sum, our lack of faith underlies some of our problems. In fact, President Bush was correct: when we were careful in what we said, our belief turned into action and therefore reality, and helped to forestall a major depression; while lack of belief helped worsen the next one. Money relies on faith. The root of currency means “run;” it is what passes between two parties. Money is rooted in Juno’s Temple, which minted coins; it is the trusted

medium of exchange. Coins’ inherent value comes from their metal content. Pennies are mostly zinc; the rest a mixture of copper, zinc, a little nickel and maybe man-ganese, but no silver or gold. A $1 coin is not worth $1 in metal. We trust our government to treat it as if it were worth $1. Bills are not worth their face value in paper and ink, nor can we trade them for gold or silver. We believe the US government backs them. So long as we have faith, we use them. To resist counterfeiting, the government mills coins. They raise top edges and reed (i.e. ridge) sides so people can’t shave metal off the sides. They redesign the bills. Both measures encour-age trust. Thus, the market and money operate on faith. We have faith in many things. Trust the government. Life would not be orderly without it (Pirqei Avot 3:2.) Faith enables the world to function. Scientific axi-oms and postulates operate, so we believe them even if we can’t prove them. The Omer period, where we admit our fear regarding the world’s rain and sun, and accept that history has not always been nice to us, culminates in Shavuot, the anniversary of God’s revelation through Torah. They, in fact all mitzvot, are the Jews’ currency of faith. Above all else stands God, whom we trust. God requires payment from us in the money of moral behav-ior and won’t let us shave the edges. While we run on bank currency, we cannot run from God. One thing we learn from the economy above all else: while we say we are scientific and behave that way, we still operate daily in the realm of faith and belief. Try adding faith in God and the currency of Judaism to your daily behavior and routine.

Interfaith Bible Book-of-the-Month Club The Interfaith Bible Class will meet on May 11, from 9:30 AM-11:30 AM, at St. Marks Church, 105 Randall Road, Shoreham. Rabbi Rascoe will be leading, continuing to explore the story of the Binding of Isaac, Genesis 22.

Arie Kaplan: Award-Winning Author,

Graphic Novelist, Comedy Writer, and Lecturer

As a nonfiction author, Arie is perhaps most well known for his book From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books, a 2008 National Jewish Book Award Finalist and 2009 Sophie Brody Honor Book (as awarded by the American Library Association.)

He is also a prolific comic book writer who has written stories and graphic novels for DC Comics, Archie Comics, Bongo Comics, IDW Publishing, Dark Horse Comics, MAD Magazine, and other publishers.

Recently, Arie wrote three of the stories in the children's short story anthology 5-Minute Avengers Stories, out now from Disney Book Group's Marvel Press imprint. He also penned one of the stories in the upcoming Spider-Man Storybook Collection, to be published by Marvel Press in May 2016. Currently, he is at work on two LEGO Star Wars books for Scholastic.

In addition to his work as an author, Arie is an in-demand public speaker, and has lectured worldwide on various pop culture-related subjects, including the history of Jews in film, the his-tory of Jews in comic books, and the history of Jews in comedy. Previous lecture venues include the 92nd Street Y (NYC,) the Skirball Cultural Center (LA,) the Nevele Grand Resort (The Cats-kills,) the Connecticut Historical Society (Hartford,) the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival (Krakow, Poland,) the Trondheim Jewish Cultural Festival (Trondheim, Norway,) and the Inter-national Festival of Comics and Games (Łódź, Poland.)

Summer Fun Recipe: Puddin’ Cones

1½ cups cold milk

1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix

3 envelopes whipped topping mix (Dream Whip)

8 cake ice cream cones (about 3 inches high)

Chopped nuts, sprinkles, and miniature colored-

coated baking chips or topping of your choice

Directions:

In a large bowl, beat milk and pudding mix on low speed

for 2 minutes. Fold in whipped topping mix; cover and

refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Spoon 1/4 cup into each

cone; sprinkle with toppings. Yield: 8 servings.
