September 2017 Elul/Tishrei 5777/5778 Vol. 165, Number 3 September 2017 Elul/Tishrei 5777/5778 As summer comes to a close, I would like to share with you what is happening at Temple. Last month, at her request, I met with Joy Blondheim, the president of Agudath Israel-Etz Ahayem. She presented me with a letter in which the AIEA board had unanimously voted to recommend changing the name of the religion school to the Elliot L. Stevens Kol Ami Religion School. At our July meeting, the Temple’s board unanimously approved this recommendation. Rabbi Stevens will be forever remembered for his significant contribution to the success of the religion school. A plaque will be created and will be placed in both schools. As Religion School begins, I am pleased to tell you that new playground equipment has arrived and been installed along with new swings. The remaining riding toys have been cleaned and painted. Most of the cost of these improvements came from the generous contribution of Carol Hart’s family who requested that the majority of funds that remained in the Carol Hart Fund be used for this purpose. We are most appreciative of the Hart family for their thoughtfulness in helping to make this very important project a reality. You also may have noticed the construction work on the porch overhang on the north side of the building. Unfortunately, a truck belonging to our grounds service company hit it several weeks ago. In rebuilding the roof, we have reduced the porch overhang so this should not occur again. Also, we are in the process of replacing the lights that shine up on the stained glass windows on both sides of the sanctuary with energy-efficient LED fixtures so that we can all enjoy the beautiful windows. Special thanks to Steve Wallace for managing both this effort and the playground work. I have established a special Pulpit Committee that in short order will begin the rabbinic search. This is an arduous task and I beg your indulgence and patience as we wind our way through the process established by the CCAR. As I stated last month, I am so appreciative of the many congregants that have been conducting services and a very special thanks to Diane Weil for taking on the task of coordinating these efforts. I am always grateful of the beautiful music that is performed weekly by Turia Stark Williams, Pete Hitchcock, Becky Taylor and all members of our choir. In just a few weeks, we will welcome the New Year, celebrating Rosh Hashanah beginning on the evening of September 20 th and with the rabbinic leadership of Rabbi Jonathan Miller. For our entire congregational family, the holidays this year will be especially somber as we all continue to mourn the loss of Rabbi Stevens. The best way for us to honor his memory is to be together in Temple, as a community of friends and family. May the New Year be a time of blessing and peace for all. SISTERHOOD September is here and my vice presidents have asked many of you to chair holiday events. Many thanks for accepting so willingly. The High Holy Days fall at the end of September and the year gets busy.

We will begin our new year with our Sisterhood Opening Meeting at the home of Jenny Ives on Wednesday, September 13th at 5:30. You should have received your invitation through an EVITE email or "snail mail". We hope you will all plan to join us for cocktails, food and friends. If you have not already responded to the EVITE RSVP, please do so.

Many thanks for those who helped Tzlil with Federation’s first Cultural Event at the Capri Theater. I want to thank my bakers: Maxine Goldner and Aimee Harris. These ladies made recipes from our cookbook which was on sale at the Event. Nora Gorski was Temple’s representative to meet and greet and to share our goodies.

Pam Hitchcock has sent you an email or snail mail to send in your Sisterhood dues. We are hoping that all women in our congregation will join. Please send your check for $35.00, made out to SISTERHOOD OF TEMPLE BETH OR. Put your name in the lower left corner. Mail your check to: Pam Hitchcock, 7546 Deer Ridge Rd, Montgomery, AL 36117

Our annual Carnegie Deli Cheesecake Fundraiser starts early September and continues through the end of October. Lisa Weil and Marlene Beringer continue to do an outstanding job selling LOTS of cheesecakes. With your help we can sell more than any other year. Please start making your lists of people to ask. Everyone really loves the Cheesecakes and they make wonderful gifts during the holidays.

This is our year to host the annual Joint Thanksgiving Service. Please say yes when our Chairpersons call asking your help. This will be another beautiful event.

Happy and Healthy Good Wishes for the New Year.

Susan Finklestein President of TBO Sisterhood

L’CHAIM LEAGUE

With the High Holidays quickly approaching, we will soon visit with our resident home-bound community members. As you prepare your holiday meals, please remember our residents with some traditional foods. Please put your food donation in a small container, and either bring it by the Temple or call me and I'll pick it up. These visits are so well received and become extra special with these homemade treats. Visits will begin the week of September 18th. If you'd like to participate either with food donation or to go along to the visits, please let me know.

Mark your calendars for TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24TH. We are hosting a Fashion Show. There will be eight presenters to model men's and women's fashions from the 1870's to the 1980's. This program is sure to be a hit and great entertainment. Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Temple. More details to follow.

We look forward to seeing you at any or all of our events. Suggestions for programs are always welcomed.

All of us at L'Chaim League wish all of you a very happy and healthy New Year.

MEN’S CLUB

Our Men’s Club night at the Biscuits game on July 23 was a great success. Thanks to all who attended! A big thanks to Azriel Gorski for coordinating the night; the food was great, and I’m sure a good time was had by all. There has been some talk that we may not have access to the Aronov Suite next year, however, Milt Livingston has begun doing research to make sure we have options just in case.

Lew Nyman will be coordinating the Sukkot decorating party on October 1st. We have a new Sukkah this year, and it is much bigger. So we will need lots help to get it decorated!

We are planning a family movie for Sunday afternoon on November 5. The movie is Loving Leah. It’s a great movie, but be sure to bring tissues; it’s a tear jerker.

Please feel free to contact me; I am always open to ideas and comments for the Men’s Club.

Join us for Tashlich [“casting off”] at 1:00 p.m. on Rosh Hashanah afternoon as we symbolically cast off our sins into the waters at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts – accompanied by a blast of the great shofar. Tashlich, a brief ceremony, is based on Micah 7:18-20: “You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” Bring your own bread of any kind [multigrain for complex sins; waffles for sins of indecision; pumpernickel for dark sins, sourdough for ill-temperedness, etc.].

When scheduling calendar events involving the Temple it is

important that you check dates with the Federation and the Temple for potential conflicts within the Jewish community. Their number is 277-5820, and you can view the community calendar at www.jewishmontgomery.org.

NEED HELP GETTING AROUND

DURING SERVICES? A wheelchair and walker are stored in the coat closet and

are available to members and guests during Temple events.

If you have accumulated unused Temple Beth Or

donation envelopes please feel free to drop them off at the Temple office so they may be

reused.

We would like to know. Please call the temple office when a family member is in the hospital or ailing. Too often we find out about illnesses, crises and hospitalizations long after they occur. This is a missed opportunity for the calls and visits the rabbi would like to share. Please let the temple know if there is a

concern in your family or another congregation family (with their permission). We need your help in order to offer ours.
