From the PulpitRabbi Michael Simon

Let me begin by hoping that you are all doing well and staying safe. And if you are I ask you to turn back to the previous page in this Shalom and read if you

haven’t and reread if you already have, that beautiful and true statement.

Although our physical space has and will remain closed until we are certain that it is absolutely safe to reopen, our hearts, minds and souls have and will continue to remain open to you, for you and for each other.

The shul, our shul, TBK, is not the building; the shul is you, our congregants, our TBK family. When we leave our homes on Shabbat for instance, we are not going to shul, we are the shul. To borrow a line from a Pastor friend, “Think people not steeple!” That is why whenever we gather together, whether in our building or in our homes we come together knowing that a shul is not just a building you go to but a family you belong to.

In the past three months we have come together as a congregation and as a community as perhaps never before. Not a day goes by that we fail to make a minyan, Shabbat attendance is at the same levels as in person attendance, we’ve added Havdalah, as well as other wrinkles to our services. All from a safe physical distance but I dare to say at a lesser emotional distance. As I’ve said on many occasions recently, our virtual services, while not ideal, have fostered more participation, and have allowed for greater “mingling” as we’ve invited each other into our homes.

For those of you who haven’t joined any of our services, please do. It is what the soul needs during these tumultuous and uncertain times.

We continue to find new ways and programs to gather together virtually. And we continue to find new ways to experience a sense of community and to engage with God and with each other. Please look for more information on our High Holiday services in the mail and e-mail as well as in the next edition of the Shalom.

As always please do not hesitate to contact me about this or any other matter.

Remember that our faith is essential. Our sanctuaries are not. They are beautiful and inspiring. And we can express our thanksgiving to God with and without them. But never at the risk of another person’s health and safety.

And remember that our shul is not closed. It remains open. Because a shul is not just a building. It is the people who you pray with, talk with and eat with. TBK is a family. And it has been proven these past few months. And just like family sticks together even when physically distant, I am proud to say that so to have we and I know with all your help we will continue to do so.

Cantor’s NotesDear friends,

As you know, I will begin my time as cantor of Temple Beth Kodesh the first Shabbat in July. Let me say how happy I am to have been chosen as your next cantor and I hope and expect our “shidduch” to be long and meaningful.

My very first congregation was a Reform Temple while I was studying voice at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. The name of the congregation was Temple B’rith Kodesh. As soon as I saw the name Beth Kodesh something told me it was beschert. I have enjoyed leading two Shabbat services with Rabbi Simon as part of the audition and his warmth and yours comes through clearly.

We are in a time of great instability and we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Whether it be live or virtual, Rabbi Simon and I look forward to worshipping together with you in joy.

For now, wishing you good health and strength of spirit. “God is with me. I do not fear.”

Warmly,Cantor Peter Halpern

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Fred Brown

Yes, TBK is still here. Ever since the pandemic hit, we have provided daily minyans, Friday night services and Shabbat morning services all done via either Facebook or Zoom. Thank you Rabbi Simon. We have had more participants than usual and from people all over the country.

Our office has been open, but not every day. Obviously there hasn’t been need for regular hours but everything is up to date.

A decision has been made, by all the synagogues in the area, that the High Holidays services will be done remotely. Details will follow.

Because of so much uncertainty, this is the time TBK needs you the most. Dues statement have gone out shortly and we would appreciate your prompt response.

In closing, all I can say is be safe and follow the guidelines set up by our local government.

Executive Vice-President’s Message Ronda Bellsey

I miss you. I miss services and I miss the Rabbi, Fritz, Fred and I miss everyone and everything else about TBK.

But I am incredibly proud of who we are. And, of how quickly our shul responded to this crisis.

From day one Rabbi Simon has been conducting minyans and Shabbat services. We had beautiful and moving Yom HaShoah and Yom Hazikaron programs. We even had seders.

This Covid 19 virus has not and cannot stop us.

Being a member of Temple Beth Kodesh is being part of a family.

Please join our minyans - please come to services - please stay connected to your TBK community.

Just join Zoom and enter the I.D. number: 6286578843. Our virtual assistant will be happy to help you. You’ll get to see us (sometimes in pajamas) and mingle for a while. We need, more than ever, to stay connected.

So I’m hoping to see you either at 8:30 any weekday morning or Friday night at 6:00 or Saturday morning at 10:00. Havdalah Saturday night when three stars appear.Remember—-6286578843Stay home, stay safe, stay healthy. (I hope some of you miss me too)

Vice-President’s Message

This is certainly not the “new normal” I expected to be dealing with. This is not what I expected to be writing about as we head into summer, looking forward to the High Holiday season.

Although during this pandemic it is not feasible to actively solicit new members, my focus has turned to membership retention. While our building is closed, it is so important to keep in touch with our current members, letting them know that our TBK Family cares.

Throughout this period of isolation, our Ambassadors have attempted to connect via telephone with as many members as possible to make that very important “connection”. Our valued Ambassadors have reported that our members are very appreciative of the calls and welcome that “connection”. I am also very appreciative of our Ambassadors and thank all 22 of you!

Have you made a Temple Beth Kodesh connection during these long months? Have you tried to be part of the many ways we are offering to keep us “together”? Are you familiar with our “Reb on the Web”? Rabbi Simon conducts minyans at 8:30 daily, Kabbalat Shabbat Services on Friday evenings at 6 and Shabbat morning services at 10. Our weekly Shabbat Blast highlights other services and opportunities for us to come together virtually during this time of isolation. There are simulcasts live on our Facebook page and on Zoom.

If you do not have a computer, please don’t feel left out…no excuses. You can join via your own landline or mobile phone and you don’t even have to get dressed! Please check out the page for all instructions in this issue of Shalom.

When I join our members for any of these services, I have such a feeling of community! It is a beautiful thing to experience this coming together for a daily dose of comfort! The Rabbi’s words are always inspiring but it is also fun to see familiar faces, to hear familiar voices and to greet each other.

Please give it a try! I will be looking and/or listening for you, my fellow congregants, until we can physically be together again in our own shul. Meanwhile, stay safe and stay healthy!

B’Shalom,

Judy

ZOOM SHALOM GREETINGS TO ALL OUR TBK MEMBERS from the TBK Virtual Assistant

Rabbi Simon rose to the occasion and without hesitation was the key motivator in bringing TBK into a virtual arena so that we could all stay connected. We spoke about the possibilities and before I knew it I had started my new “piece of cake” at TBK and the Rabbi gave me a new title “TBK Virtual Assistant”.

I am truly impressed with how many of you have reached out and have had the patience to learn to ZOOM. We grow together with patience and a sense of humor like a Mishpoucha. Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Special shout out of many thanks to Paul Kline for all his time in guiding us through the mysteries and vast possibilities of the Virtual World.

ZOOM GOLLY GOLLY Hugs to all - Liz Taylor-Watnick

Programming Vice-President’s Message It is great to be back to doing the Shalom again!

I miss our congregation to the nth degree. I miss Shabbos services, the Rabbi’s Thursday morning class, helping Carrin on Shabbos morning and our many social gatherings.

Though not bored, due to many hobbies such as cooking for us and others, crocheting 200 granny squares for our granddaughter’s blanket, doing fused and stained glass projects and keeping the house clean, I would love some personal face-to-face conversations with friends, children and grandchildren. Now that the Shalom is finished I can put the blanket together.

Hopefully we will have a guest speaker this summer through ZOOM. I spoke to Dr. Robert Watson this week and we just need to come up with a date, time and topic. More information will come soon. Please everyone stay well until we can be together again.

We hope this article finds everyone from our Temple in good health and doing well. Before we write further, we must thank Marvin Wolf for passing the President’s baton to both of us in such good standing.

We know if we have a problem he will be at our Men’s Club meeting to help us.

We have some outstanding ideas for activities and events for the Men’s Club coming year. Still if any Men’s Club member has any ideas, please feel free to let us know.

The meeting date of our next gathering will be announced at a future time.

Take care & best wishes!

From Leah NoskinSisterhood President

These are strange times for all of us. In our lifetime we have started to end our conversations with “Keep Well’.

Our days start and we try to remember what day it is and what we might be able to do - perhaps sit outside with some of our neighbors in our driveways. I knew my garage would come in handy one day for uses other than my car and miscellaneous stuff. A beautician came into my open garage to cut my bangs (they were in my eyes), gave me manicure (I sure needed it) and the following week a pedicure in my wonderful garage. Life has certainly changed!

But Sisterhood is still a vibrant part of the synagogue. We recently gave the synagogue a nice donation. We have no future plans, but we all think about what we will do when things get back to “normal”.

I miss seeing all of you and especially my wonderful board of trustees. I look forward to be-ing with all of you again soon.

In the meantime, “Keep Well”.

JokeoftheMonth

The Badkhn speaks:

Hello again from the lonely Badkhn; I am happy to have an audience again after all these weeks of social distancing. There was no one except the Badkhn to listen to my tall-tales. Hope all are well; I will endeavor to lift your spirits, but perhaps only the Rabbi can do that.

I fear that after all these weeks of quarantine, I will come out as either a Chunk, a Hunk, or a Drunk.

So many new expressions have emerged which fit well with the Yiddish vocabulary and sense of perfect onomatopoeia. I have watched so many Zoom events that I have become Oyisgezoomt. When we want to curse someone in Yiddish we say he is a “choleryea”, which means “he should have the cholera”. I have learned my lesson; the new way to curse him is to wish he should be farcovidik.

Illness so fills the Jewish discourse, that there is a new Jewish disease in “Miama Bich”. The old Jewish men wear such heavy gold Chais hanging from heavy gold chains around their necks that it led to a new exclusively Jewish disease called a “Chiatal Hernia”.

Two old Jewish men were roommates in a hospital. Both were instructed by their physicians to remain in bed and under no circumstances get out of bed.

One man trying to get some rest hears his roommate say “Oy, do I have a thirst”. This goes on once every 10 minutes for an hour, “Oy,do I have a thirst”.

Neither could get out of bed, but alas he couldn’t stand it any more.

Against Doctor’s orders, he gets out of bed and pours his roommate a glass of water. Now, he thinks, at last I will get some rest.

Ten minutes later he hears his roommate say “Oy, did I have a thirst, Oy did I have a thirst”.

Somedays you can’t win.

Zait Gezunt,

Again I call on all to send me their favorite Jewish themed jokes.

See you soon.Earle the Badkhn

THE CHESED (KINDNESS) COMMITTEE

In January 2020, the Chesed Committee was formed. Being Jewish is a way of life demonstrated by “acting” and not merely by “saying”. At TBK we should be very proud of how we “live” these values.

Our Mission Statement: Can you use help after an injury? A person to talk to? A meal? Helping run an errand? An extra pair of hands? A visit?

No request is too small. All requests will be kept confidential. We hope this is just the beginning where we can have the opportunity to enrich your lives while performing a very important mitzvot.

Please do not hesitate to reach out and contact me if we can be of any assistance, or if you would like to join the committee.

Jewish Federation of Palm Beach CountyWe, the undersigned members of the Jewish Community Relations Council Assembly of Palm Beach County, deplore the killing of George Floyd by law enforcement officers in Minneapolis, an act that comes in the wake of a string of similar outrages.

We stand united in solidarity with the Black community, as an ally in the fight for equality and the right of all people, regardless of skin color, to live without fear for their safety. We all need to work together to enact those changes in law enforcement and in our criminal justice system that are necessary to achieve true equality and justice in America. As our tradition commands: “Justice, Justice shall you pursue!”

We stand together against hatred and bigotry in any form. Racism—just like the rising tide of antisemitism—is a virus that spreads with passivity. The Jewish community knows all too person-ally and painfully the dangers of unchecked hatred, particularly when it infiltrates systems and is harbored by those in power. In the words of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “…In regard to cruelties committed in the name of a free society, some are guilty, while all are responsible.”

The function of law enforcement is vital to society, and the majority of law enforcement officials are dedicated public servants, many of whom have given their lives to protect others. For this reason, we call on all law enforcement agencies to quickly and effectively address violations and those who violate their oath to protect and serve in a manner that restores public trust and up-holds the core American, democratic values of justice and equality.

Here is Karen Goldenberg, TBK’s own master gardener as she spends her Thursday mornings— digging, planting, weeding and beautifying our property.

Karen volunteered many years ago to work in our garden but she does so much more than that. Before she changes into her work shoes Karen attends our Thursday morning minyan and almost every other time we need a minyan for a congregant needing to say Kaddish she answers the call

She makes our land blossom and our temple thrive.Thank you Karen Goldenberg!!!!!
