Temple Receives Grants from Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services

Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services awarded Temple Beth-El four grants totaling $14,100 for the current fiscal year. We are grateful to GMJSS for helping us enrich the lives of Jewish seniors in our community. The grant funds will help to support the following programs:

Mobile Music is a program which will bring live and recorded Jewish music to homebound Jewish seniors, enhancing their connection to their heritage and community. A leading Jewish musician will perform intimate concerts and lead a Shabbat Shirah service at the Temple. Participants will also receive a library of Jewish music to enjoy in their own homes. GMJSS funds will be supplemented by the Jean & Jesse Wulfe Religious Enhance-ment Fund to support the guest musician’s extensive work in our community.

Shabbat Seniors’ Havurah is an entirely new program which will offer a monthly opportunity for seniors to gather during Shabbat afternoon for an entertaining lunch program with meaningful spiritual and social opportunities.

Shabbat to Your Door is also a new program that will provide meaningful Shabbat experiences and personal encounters for Temple members who are hospitalized or homebound. Temple clergy and volunteers will visit program participants and bring them Shabbat goodies to enhance their Shabbat experience.

Our fourth grant will allow us to provide complementary transportation to senior members with limited transportation options who want to participate in Temple services and activities. GMJSS funds will supplement two Temple funds which are also used for this purpose (The Mildred K. and Albert C. Strum Memorial Fund and The Renee and Kurt Pomper Fund for Senior Transportation). Because of increased demand in recent years, GMJSS funds are needed in order to allow us to maintain this service for many years to come.

The Rabbi SpeaksI remember

how, as a child, my father would take great care to read to me every night. As bedtime approached, I would eagerly anticipate my father entering the room, carrying a very special book. Contained within

were cowboy stories, all vivid in their illus-tration, full of action and suspense. Before my little eyelids would close for a night’s rest, the last thought on my impressionable young mind was always some valuable lesson, lifted up by a cowboy, passed on through the voice of my father.

The cowboy book was even more meaningful because it was a book of true stories—lived and written about by a man whom my father greatly loved, my grand-father. My grandfather, the son of a rabbi, was actually a cowboy in Texas before going to law school. I never had the chance to meet my grandfather, as he was not alive by the time of my birth. How else to know my father’s father, but to love him through his stories—the stories that my grandfather gave to my father? As I would close my eyes to fall asleep, I was both comforted and inspired by my grandfather’s heroic adventures.

A fondness for my grandfather’s tales does not limit me from discovering my

own stories and listening to new ones. We may all seek to tell stories of our past and present. This is one way that we know we need one another. What good is a story if we are not given the gift of being honored by someone who will listen?

Our Temple is a reservoir continuously being filled with all our stories, the experi-ences and memories of our lives. When we walk through the gateway entrance of Temple Beth-El, we are greeted with the words, “My house shall be a house of prayer for all peoples.” (Isaiah 35:7) Our ancient wisdom reminds us that all peoples are heard by God – most immediate family members and total strangers alike. So too, when we honor the wellspring of all our stories, we fully embrace our humanity.

Sometimes, it might be hard to relate a story to someone who is distant to us or from a different background or vantage point. On other occasions, a listener may be confused by the significance of a story, even by someone close to them.

How might we embrace all our stories, as sacred? We may choose to listen, not only out of duty, but with emotional sensi-tivity and involvement. Our community is strengthened when we listen to each other’s stories with compassion. We find such ever-loving kindness emblazoned in the inner sanctuary of Our House, of the Wulfe Sanctuary of Temple Beth-El, “Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself.”

So, too may our stories find their way to the sanctuary of all our hearts.

Landsman Fund Helps Wounded

in July, Temple member and San Antonio Express-News columnist, Jonathan Gurwitz, spoke about our duties to wounded warriors. He specifically suggested contributions to Returning Heroes Home, http://www.return-ingheroeshome.org, a San Antonio program and facilities for men and women wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Through this gift to Returning Heroes Home from the Landsman Fund, our congregation reinforces its deep commitment and support of our wounded warriors in all branches of the armed forces. Our congregation can be grateful to Martha and the late Richard Landsman, for creating this fund, which allows our Temple family to respond to natural and human disasters throughout the world. Rabbi Block and Harriet “Missy” Berler approve all grants made from this Relief Fund. Donations to the Landsman Family Relief Fund are always welcome.

Can You Serve the Temple by Ushering During the High Holy Days?

Ushering is a vital part of our Temple. Ushers represent the Temple in a very visible way, providing a friendly, cheerful greeting to all those who enter, and helping set the tone in preparation for the worship service, as well as assisting with the flow of the service. We are already beginning our search for ushers to serve at our High Holy Day Services. We need a minimum of 45 individuals during this time! If you can help out at one or more of these services, please contact Beth Keough at [email protected] or 481-0828.

New Introduction to Judaism

Section to Begin Saturday, August 27

New students will be welcomed to our Intro-duction to Judaism course beginning on Saturday, August 27, in the Block Conference Center of the Temple. Classes will be held from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m., every Saturday, except as announced.

In the past, the course was offered in a fall or a spring semester, even though the conversion process was an entire year. Now, classes continue for an entire year.

All major facets of Jewish life are covered, including introductory Hebrew. Rabbis Block and Plost are the principal instructors.

Course Open to AllThough all prospective converts to Judaism

are required to enroll in this course, the program is open to the entire congregation and community. The course is particularly appropriate for interfaith couples, whether or not the non-Jewish partner is seeking conversion. Many Jewish adults have found this course to be an excellent way to enhance their own Jewish education.

Conversion candidates, who are married or engaged, or who have significant others, are required to attend the program together with their partners.

There is no charge for the Introduction to Judaism course, though there is a charge for books, and conversion candidates may incur other expenses as part of the program.

To register, and for more information, please contact Iris Berman-Smith at the Temple office, 733-9135, ext. 106, or [email protected] . Regis-trants who may possibly be conversion candidates are asked to kindly indicate that fact to Iris.

Our Introduction to Judaism program has been dedicated in memory of Marjorie Green Patterson, by her family.

Keep Us InformedWe rely on our Temple members, their

friends and family to let us know when some-one is hospitalized or suffering any illness or bereavement, or would just enjoy a call or visit from the clergy or a member of the congrega-tion. The clergy would also like to hear good news, such as celebrating a birth or other simcha. Since the privacy laws have changed, some local hospitals no longer release in-formation when we ask for a list of Jewish patients. Methodist Healthcare does provide names of Jewish patients, but even that infor-mation is imperfect. In order to better serve the congregation, please share this information with our clergy by calling Iris Berman-Smith at 733-9135, extension 106. The patient or im-mediate family is often not able to make this call, so please let us hear from you.

Volunteers Still Needed for Beth-El Food & Fun Summer Day Camp!

The Temple has been designated by the San Antonio Food Bank and the Texas De-partment of Agriculture as an official “Feed-ing Site” for needy children in the vicinity of the Temple. Volunteers serve breakfast and lunch and occupy the children with activities between meals each day, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The program, which has over 100 children registered and a daily average of 35 in attendance, began June 13, and continues through August 19. It has been a resound-ing success, thanks to the efforts of scores of volunteers and the Kimmelman and Lang Funds of the Temple. If you are interested in volunteering or hearing more about this program, please call Geri Gregory at 733-9135, ext. 120, or email [email protected] .

Attention: Confirmation Class of 2012

Orientation Meeting for Students and ParentsSunday, August 21, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

All grade 10 students planning to participate in Confirmation Class this school year are to bring their parents to this orientation meeting. Together, you will learn about the exciting activities you’ll be participating in to fulfill the requirements of Confirmation. The Rabbis and education staff will be on hand to describe the program, answer any questions, and to get you started on this last, formal year of study at Temple Beth-El Religious School.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, please call Sara Planto in the Religious School office (733-9135, ext. 108).

If you have not completed the registration packet for Religious School, please do so as soon as possible. Sara can also assist you with this process.

Over the past couple of months, the refrain I’ve heard over and over again is, “You’re starting at Temple Beth-El at the beginning of June? But school doesn’t start until September!” Well, allow me to tell you what I’ve been up to — and what I will continue to do until Religious School begins in September.

Our children will develop a number of significant relationships during the time they are in Religious School, not the least of which are with our rabbis and cantor,

and hopefully, with me. But the single most influential relationship is with their teachers. I have taken the time to meet with the teach-ers to get to know them, to learn about what is important to them as teachers and how I can support them, and to discuss both philoso-phy and procedure.

I have begun the process of reviewing and evaluating the existing curriculum and textbooks and will be making some changes in the coming weeks to revitalize the content that is being taught as well as the methods for delivering that content is delivered. I’m delighted to have Rabbi Block, Rabbi Plost, Cantor Berlin, and the Lifelong Jewish Learning Committee as my partners in this exciting endeavor.

Over the next month, I’ll be hiring new teachers, ordering supplies and textbooks, reviewing and revising the Parent, Faculty and Ma’aseh handbooks, among other tasks.

As Director of Lifelong Jewish Learning, I’ll also be taking on the mantle of Adult Education. Having had such a great response to our Tikkun Leyl Shavuot in June, I’m eager to work with our adult learners as we create a program that meets the educational needs of our entire congregation.

It’s going to be a great year, and I’m so happy to be here! I hope you’ll take a moment to introduce yourself when you come to services, when you bring your children to Religious School, or even when you just happen to be in the building. I can’t wait to meet you!

Sundays, August 7, 14, 21, and 2810:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Instructor Alana Adams will present a fun training program to help ensure each child will be prepared to enter the new Hebrew classroom in September! We advise attending all four classes, but students will benefit from as few as two review sessions.

Cost per session, $20. Cost for entire series is $50.Call the Religious School office 733-9135, ext. 108 to register.

We Want You… To Register for Religious School!

President’s Volunteer Service Awards to be Presented August 26

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Temple Beth-El has been designated as a Certifying Organization to nominate, verify, and distribute the President’s Volunteer Service Awards.

Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.

Temple Beth-El will honor deserving individuals on Friday, August 26, at 6:30 p.m., in the Barshop Auditorium in the following categories: Kids, age 5 to 14; Young adults, age 15 to 25; and Adults, age 26 and above. They will receive one of the following awards: Bronze, Silver, Gold, or President’s Call to Service, for a lifetime spent in volunteering (over 4,000 hours). Each will receive a lapel pin, a letter from President Barack Obama, and a certificate.

Temple Beth-El OmbudspersonIf you have a question or concern about Temple policy,

process, etc., and would like confidential assistance in having your query answered,

please call Marty Epner at 210-862-1500.

Daniel Laser Named Golden Manor Executive Director

Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services has named Temple member, Daniel Laser Executive Director of the agency, effective July 1. Laser has been the agency’s Acting Director since February 2010, and was its Finance Director before that.

“Daniel has been instrumental in helping Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services evolve from the operator of a skilled nursing facility to an agency that provides programs and activities that benefit area Jewish seniors, and enables such programs provided by other organizations through grant awards,” said Mike Kelne, President of Golden Manor’s Board of Directors.

“Daniel has worked tirelessly to make the first round of Golden Manor’s program grant awards to community agencies, synagogues and other organizations successful, and we have every expectation that the process will continue to improve under his leadership,” Kelne said.

Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services’ grant program supports that agency’s mission of addressing the needs and enriching the quality of life for San Antonio Jewish seniors.

Ever wondered what Talmud looks like? Looking to find a great recipe for your favorite Jewish food? Does your child have a question about a holiday or life cycle? Want to read a novel by your favorite Jewish writer? If you have any of these questions, come to the Bendiner Library for answers. The library has over 4,000 non-fiction titles, 700 fiction titles and about 900 young adult and juvenile books. Each year 1,876 volumes are checked out. About

120 students from the religious school receive instruction at the library. We also have a wonderful mobile book cart after Shabbat services on Friday evening.

Wi fi service is available for your laptop or mobile device at the library, and you can also follow us on Facebook. On

Beth-El Brotherhood Beth-El Brotherhood officers and immediate past presidents met

recently in June to develop the calendar for 2011/2012. I am happy to report that many of the familiar events and projects will return. Several new projects and events are in the works, and final schedul-ing should be complete soon. Volunteering and serving our com-munity will remain a large focus. Just as important to our members, both returning and new, will be a frequent schedule of social events. Some of these events will include new learning opportunities and, as always, be great schmoozing opportunities.

On Thursday, August 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Beth-El Brotherhood will honor Rabbi Ari Plost during a special happy hour at Los Barrios, 4223 Blanco Road. We want to welcome him to Temple Beth-El in Brotherhood fashion. This will be his first opportunity to meet fellow Brotherhood members. If you haven’t joined Brotherhood at Los Barrios in past years, we strongly urge folks to show up this time around, especially Temple members who are thinking about joining Beth-El Brotherhood for 2011-2012. It will be a particularly festive event. Brotherhood will provide a feast of appetizers, and there will be a cash bar for margaritas and cervezas. Please RSVP soon to Mark Ingram at [email protected] .

In June, Beth-El Brotherhood welcomed our new Director of Lifelong Jewish Learning, Lisa Goldstein, at a similar Happy Hour at Max’s Wine Dive. This gathering hosted more than 35 people — some familiar faces and some new ones, too. Besides the great wine and food, this event gave many of us a chance to meet Lisa and her husband Maury. Several attendees remarked to me at the end about how fortunate we are to have Lisa and Maury at Temple Beth-El. I experienced my own wonderful moment after sharing some thoughts with Lisa about a subject that I want to teach to my sons. She listened intently and then suggested some great children’s books to check out.

Also in June, Brotherhood sponsored a congregational outing to see the San Antonio Missions play baseball. It was well-attended and tons of fun. I am proud to say that my son, Joshua, and I caught a fly ball!

Please keep an eye out for an upcoming an-nouncement. We will have an annual Brotherhood meeting for all members and new members later this summer. This will kick off our year ahead and give members an opportunity to put their name down to help on future events. We’ll need servers, cooks, cashiers, sukkah builders, project managers, singers, parade volunteers, softball players, ushers, youth educators, clergy, dads, sons, grandparents, schmoozers, all generations. Shalom!

Andy Kabbe, President of Beth-El Brotherhood

TIME SENSITIVE MATERIAL

Letter from The PresidentI feel honored and

privileged to serve as your new President, and I’m looking forward to an exciting term in office. Our new Assistant Rabbi, Ari Plost, and Director of Lifelong Jewish Learning, Lisa Goldstein, have so much in store for the entire Temple community, across all age groups and for all types of families.

One of my own objectives for the coming year is to help launch the Eitz Chayim Legacy Society of Temple Beth-El, to recognize each member who generously provides for a future gift to the congregation though a will, trust, survivorship account, life insurance or designation of retirement plan benefits.

Many of these techniques are inexpensive, easy to accomplish, and don’t involve parting with cash or in-vestments at the present time. The gifts are completed in the future, at the time you pass away, and serve as a lasting memorial to the forethought and generosity you have demonstrated.

We have gathered together an advisory council of attorneys, accountants, and financial professionals, all Temple members who are committed to developing a culture of planned giving in order to insure the contin-ued growth and viability of our historic congregation for generations to come.

You will be hearing more about Eitz Chayim in the coming weeks, including the opportunity to become a charter member of the society by making a planned gift if you have not already done so, or for receiving proper recognition if you have. Please feel free to call Rabbi Alan Berlin in the Temple office with any questions.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing you at Temple throughout the year!

Bill Goodman
