CLOSING FAMILY SERVICE & TRIBUTE TO RABBINIC INTERN LISA IZES

ABIGAIL TERRY BECOMES BAT MITZVAH

On Saturday, May 8, Abigail Terry, daughter of Eric Terry and the late Deborah Terry, will become a Bat Mitzvah at our Shabbat morning service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. After doing some research, we have determined that this will be the first BarlBat Mitzvah ofa child ofa Temple member since 1977. Clearly, this is a significant milestone in the history of our congregation. We hope you will join us for Shabbat morning services on Saturday, May 8, for what we hope will be the first of many B'nai Mitzvah in years to come.

TRIBUTE TO RABBINIC INTERN LISA IZES

Lisa Izes will be completing her year as our Rabbinic Intern at the end of May; therefore, we will pay tribute to her and thank her for our service to our congregation at our closing family service on Saturday, May 15. In the brief time that Lisa has been with us, she has touched the lives of many members of our congregation, but nowhere more than within our Religious School, where she has enriched the lives of the students and enhanced their understanding of our Jewish tradition. Please join us on Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m. , as we express our gratitude to Lisa and wish her well, as she pursues her career in the rabbinate.

SHA' AREI TEFILAH-THROUGH THE GATES OF PRAYER

Join us for a very special adult education opportunity being provided by Rabbi Brickman and Rabbinic Inter Lisa Izes. Study with us as we explore the origins of Jewish prayer, study the historic contexts of the prayers we recite and determine their meanings for our lives today. If you never opened a prayer book or if you have been dawening for years, this is the class for you! Topics to be covered include:

May 5 - Why do Jews pray? How is the service arranged? Getting '~armed-up" to pray.

May 12 - Why is the Sh'ma so important to Jews? How do we introduce the Shma, and what could

possibly follow it? May 19 - Why is the Amidah the central part of the service?

When is it acceptable to change our ancient prayers? May 26 - What is the Torah service all about? Where does the

Aleynu come from? Why is the Kaddish so important to us.

All classes will be held in the Temple library, beginning at 7:30 p.m .. Join us for any or all of the sessions, and bring your friends.

FEATURING "THE LONG WAY HOME"

The Academy Award Winning Documentary Film by the Simon Wiesenthal Center

For the majority of Holocaust survivors, World War II did not end with their liberation from Nazi Concentration and death camps. As the perSonal accounts In ''The Long Way Home" demonstrate, the battle to rebuild lives and human dignity continued long after the Allies' victory. The tumultuous years between 1945-1948, from liberation to the creation of the State of Israel, epitomized the challenges that the Holocaust survivors faced in recreating their Identity from the remnants of. their destroyed world.

"Staggeringly powerful" Janet Maslin ''The New York Times"

There will also be a brief commemorative ceremony featuring musical selections by

the Adult Volunteer Choir of Temple Beth-EI

Refreshments will be served. No Charge - Open to the Public - Parking Available In the Fleet Bank Lot
