SUNDAY STRUGGLESTemple grabbed its first Sunday win of the season in four games when the Owls topped Cincin-nati on Sunday, January 10. Prior to that win, Temple had played three Sunday games going 0-3,with losses to Rutgers, Saint Joseph’s, and Florida State.

SPREADING THE LOVEIn Temple’s 66-46 win over Tulsa on January 8, 10 different Owls broke into the scoring column.Nine players had scored in previous games against Quinnipiac (L, 58-56), Sacred Heart (W, 92-62), and Delaware State (W, 100-59), but this was the first time in the 2015-16 season that 10players scored. The lowest number of scorers Temple has had in a game this season was four in a61-51 loss at Rutgers.

Last season, Temple only carried nine players on its roster, so the last time a cherry and whitebox score had 10 players score points was January 9, 2014 in a 64-51 win over Memphis.

TEMPLE IN THE AMERICANTemple embarks on its third season of American Athletic Conference play, a year after going 12-6against league opponents. The Owls finished fourth in The American in 2014-15, and fell to #5ECU (77-71) in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

In 2013-14, Temple went 8-10 in The American. The Owls grabbed the six seed and fell to #3 USFin the quarterfinals of the tournament.

CONFERENCE OPENERSIn conference openers, Temple stands 19-14 overall (since 1983-84) and is currently riding a six-game winning streak. The Owls are 3-0 in American openers, with all three wins coming againstMemphis.

2015-16 was the third-straight year that Temple opened conference play against Memphis. Inboth 2013-14 and 2014-15, the Owls played the Tigers on the road to open The American season, but played Memphis at home this year.

CANADA TRANSFERSTemple freshman Chyanna Canada has transferred out of the Owls’ program. The 6-2 forward leftTemple following the completion of the fall semester. Canada had seen limited action for theOwls, playing in three total games, scoring two points.

KEEPING IT OUTSIDEBefore getting to the line for 24 attempts against Delaware State, Temple had attempted lessthan 12 free throws for three-straight contests. In a loss to Florida State, the Owls attempted justthree (making two), in a 75-47 loss. Against Sacred Heart, the Owls went 4-for-9 from the line, but were hot from three, contributing to the 92-62 win. Temple got to the line only 11 timesagainst Fordham, making seven of their attempts. For the season, the Owls are ninth in the con-ference (out of 11 teams) in free throws attempted.

LEADING THE STAT LINEWith her stat line against Rutgers (27 points, nine rebounds, three assist), Feyonda Fitzgeraldbecame the first Temple player since 2011 to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists. Thelast player to accomplish that feat for the Owls was Shey Peddy, who totaled 26 points, 9 re-bounds, and four assists in a 61-52 win at Duquesne on February 5, 2011.

OFFENSE ROLLS AGAINST THE PIONEERSTemple’s 30-point victory against Sacred Heart on December 9, marking the first time an Owlsquad defeated an opponent by that margin since a 33-point win over Cincinnati on January 20,2015. the field. The Owls also shot 50% from three (12-24) for first time since Valentine’s Day lastseason when Temple went 7-for-12 (58.3%) from long range against Houston.

The Temple shooting numbers benefitted from a season-best 28 assists against Sacred Heart. The 28 helpers marked the first time that the Owls had over 25 since the 2011 season (27 atGeorge Washington - 2/16/11). The Owls also had 15 steals for the first time this season.

DOMINATING DELAWARE STATETemple’s 100-59 victory over Delaware State hit a number of milestones for the Owls. Thetriple-digit point total was the first 100-point game for the program in 21 years. Temple last hitthe 100-point mark when it scored 102 in a win over Rutgers on March 3, 1994.

The 41-point win was also the first 40+ point victory for the program in three years. The lasttime a Temple team beat a team by 40 or more was when the Owls topped Rhode Island, 84-41, on February 19, 2012.

REBOUNDING IS KEYFive out of the first six Temple wins this season all had one thing in common: the Owls out-re-bounded their opponents. Temple is 7-2 when recording better rebounding numbers this sea-son, and is 2-3 when being out-rebounded.

For the season, the Owls have a rebounding margin of +3.0, thanks in large part to out-re-bounding Sacred Heart, 47-21. The +26 rebounding margin in that game was the highest allseason, and it marked the first time that Temple had a 20 or more rebound advantage in agame since out-rebounding Duquesne by 25 on February 17, 2010.

WORK HORSESJunior Feyonda Fitzgerald and sophomore Alliya Butts combined for 45 of the team’s 51against Rutgers, but both also played nearly the whole game. Fitzgerald recorded her third ca-reer game without a break, playing all 40 minutes against the Scarlet Knights. Butts estab-lished a near career high of 37 minutes played in a game, one she set just a few days before, seeing 36 minutes of action against La Salle.

BEST FRIENDS SQUARE OFFWhen Temple and Quinnipiac faced off on the court, a pair of best friends and former team-mates also faced off as well. Temple freshman Deja Reynolds (Philadelphia, Pa./ImhotepCharter) and Quinnipiac rookie Brittany Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) may have grownup in different states, going to different high schools, but both played for the Philly TripleThreat AAU team. The pair has played together since sixth grade and will be facing off on op-posing sides for the first time.

In the game, Martin’s team came out on top, but it was Reynolds with the stronger stat line.Reynolds made her first career appearance for Temple, finishing with two points, four re-bounds, two steals and one assist in 15 minutes. Martin played 16 minutes, finishing score-less with one assist.

BIG 5 OPENERTemple won its Philadelphia Big 5 opener for the third-straight season, with all three winscoming against La Salle.

Last season, Temple finished 1-3 in the Big 5, topping La Salle, but falling to St. Joseph’s, Vil-lanova, and Penn. The Owls combined point differential in the three Big 5 losses last seasonwas just 11 points, with an average margin of victory of 3.67 points, including one overtimeloss.

This season, Temple is 2-2 in the Big 5, after losses to Penn and Saint Joseph’s and wins overLa Salle and Villanova.

Tonya Cardoza is in her eighth season on North BroadStreet, continuing and building upon the success of Templewomen’s basketball.

The 2014-15 Owls showed that they are ready to makea return to the national stage. Cardoza's squad made thefirst post-season final four in program history, advancingto the WNIT semifinals before falling in overtime at WestVirginia. The Owls finished with a 20-win season, going 20-17 overall, including a 12-6 mark in the tough American Ath-letic Conference. The 2014-15 season saw the breakout offreshman Alliya Butts, who was named Big 5 Freshman ofthe Year, while also earning spots on the American All-Con-ference team, the American All-Rookie team, and the All-Big 5 team. Junior combo guard Erica Covile also receivedAll-Big 5 and All-American Athletic Conference honors, while senior Tyonna Williams earned the American Sports-manship Award, as well as one of six spots on the All-WNITteam.

2013-14 marked a new era of women’s basketball atTemple for Cardoza— competing in the inaugural season ofthe American Athletic Conference. Guided by true freshmanpoint guard Feyonda Fitzgerald, the Owls faced seven na-tionally ranked opponents— tying the school record for themost in season— including two games against defendingnational champion and No. 1 Connecticut and Final Fourparticipant Louisville. The young Owls finished fifth inAmerican play after predicted to finish ninth, showing theleague and the nation that they had fight.

Fitzgerald was a unanimous All-Freshman Team hon-oree from the conference as well as a second-team All-Con-ference selection. Junior Rateska Brown earned theAmerican’s inaugural Sixth Player of the Year Award. SeniorNatasha Thames was a second-team All-Conference hon-oree, and freshman Taylor Robinson was named to the All-Freshman team.

The 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Cardoza ledthe Owls to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appear-ances, advancing to the Second Round in both 2010 and2011. The Owls narrowly missed earning a berth in theNCAA Tournament in 2011-12, but took a top spot in theWomen’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and ad-vanced to the third round.

Along with earning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year hon-ors for the Owls' performance in 2010-11, Cardoza was hon-ored as the Big 5 Coach of the Year for a third time. Sheearned that honor in each of her first three seasons at Tem-ple, and the Owls earned their sixth straight Big 5 title inher first year with the program. Temple won the Big 5 againin 2011, and finished as runner-up in both 2010 and 2012.

Already 107-57 all-time in her head coaching career,Cardoza led Temple to at least 20 wins in her first four yearsat the helm. During her inaugural season in 2008-09, Car-doza guided TU to a 21-10 mark and an NCAA?Tournamentappearance. She was a finalist for the National RookieCoach of the Year award. The Owls reached 25 wins in2009-10 which tied for the second-most in the history ofthe program. In 2010-11, the Owls finished 24-9 which in-cluded a 15-game win streak and a 13-1 record in the At-lantic 10. The 2011-12 season saw Temple go 23-10 and win

14 in a row, once again with a 13-1 mark in the conference.During their final year of Atlantic 10 Conference play in2012-13, Cardoza guided the nation’s second-youngestteam (six freshmen).

After spending 14 years as assistant coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut under Hall of Fame coach Geno Au-riemma, a tenure in which she helped the Huskies to fiveNational Championships, few doubted that Cardoza hadwhat it takes to build a successful program.

The Owls finished in the Top 3 in the Atlantic 10 forthree consecutive seasons. In Cardoza’s first season shecoached the squad to an upset over No. 13 Xavier, makingher the first coach in TU women’s basketball history toupset a ranked team during her rookie season.

Cardoza was instrumental in All-Conference selectionLaKeisha Eaddy’s transition to point guard in 2008-09,nearly helping the upperclassman set a new single seasonrecord for assists. Cardoza also retained then-freshman re-cruit Kristen McCarthy, who was named to the A-10 FirstTeam in 2010, as well as taking home the title of Big 5Player of the Year.

Cardoza's best recruit had to sit out a year after trans-ferring from Division I Wright State in 2009, but Shey Peddythen became one of the top players in the history of theprogram. Peddy took home both the Atlantic 10 Player ofthe Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2012,and was named the Big 5 Player of the Year for a secondstraight time. Peddy was a two-time Atlantic 10 First Teamselection and made her mark on the all-time career recordlists despite playing only two years with the Owls. Peddybecame Cardoza’s first WNBA draft pick (as a head coach)when she was taken 23rd overall in the 2012 WNBA Draftby the Chicago Sky.

Arriving at Connecticut at the start of the 1994-95season, Cardoza helped guide the Huskies to an unprece-dented 465-41 record, seven Final Four appearances andsix No. 1 National Rankings in the final Associated Presspoll. Cardoza was a part of four undefeated regular sea-sons, including two unbeaten national championshipteams in 1994-95 and 2001-02. The Huskies also won aNCAA record 70 consecutive games from 2001 to 2003. InBig East play, the team won 12 regular-season titles and 12conference tournament championships.

Cardoza worked primarily with the guards at UConn, producing numerous All-America and All-BIG EAST perform-ers, including WNBA stars Sue Bird, Renee Montgomery, and Diana Taurasi.

A 1991 University of Virginia graduate with a degreein anthropology, Cardoza starred for the Cavaliers, leadingthe team to four consecutive NCAA National Tournamentappearances. As a senior, she led Virginia in scoring (15.5ppg), and tied Dawn Staley for the rebounding lead (6.1rpg) while earning the following honors: Kodak HonorableMention All-America; Kodak First Team All-District III; FirstTeam All-Atlantic Coast Conference; NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team, and NCAA Regional All-TournamentTeam. She was also a First Team All-ACC pick in 1988-89.

school's career blocked shots list (110), eighth in points(1,622) and 10th in rebounds (667).
