The LHC machine deploys 32 such extraction systems in the 24 superconducting Main Powering Circuits. They are safety critical for the safeguard of the main dipole and quadrupole circuits. One system consists of:

LS1 intervention plan:1. Installation and connection of snubber capacitors and their associate fuse protection across

the DQSQ switches in all main quad. circuits - for voltage transient suppression during commutation.

2. Installation and connection of new arc chambers with higher voltage rating (1050 VDC) on the quadrupole extraction switches - as replacement of the existing 200 V version (sectors 12 & 23 were already equipped during TS’s in 2012).3. Mechanical modifications to all 48 (+spares) DQRQ extraction resistors in the main dipole

circuit. Will prevent damage and short-circuit of a part of the resistor body in the case of double energy deposit (i.e. A hypothetical non-opening of one of the two EE facilities in a sector).

4. Replacement of the ailing and drifting, Curie-temperature based thermostats on the DQRB’s by a bimetal type with higher switching point (80 C).

5. Replacement in all 64 switch controller units (DJPC) of the power switching relays which are judged too weak for a reliable protection of the breaker ‘holding’ coils. The new version has higher current rating and AgSnO2 hardened contact surfaces.

6. Re-configuration of all DQR’s, back to the origin (2 x 70 mΩ for dipole circuits and 7.7 mΩ/6.6 mΩ for quads).

7. Relocation of EE components in LHC points 1 and 5 (both sides): DQRB#3 moved in P1 and DQRCS installed on DQRB#1 in P5.

8. General preventive maintenance program applied to all 32 switch facilities, with gap and pressure adjustments, cleaning of main & arcing contacts, delay measurements and µ-switch checks.

9. Complete verifications of all bolted contacts and of all multi-pin connectors in all elements.3/6

IST test plan applicable to each of the 32 complete systems, however with reduced program in the odd points:

Note: An important part of the measurements and validations can (evidently) only be performed after connection of the cold magnet chain.

Program:1. HVQ -with PC disconnected and safety measures applied at DFBA and PC in case that the cooled cables are connected to the EE system. 2. Functional Tests (no dc current through the system) using dummy quench loop source. Local controls through dedicated Labview application similar to ‘QPSExpert’ and communication link to the DQAMS – RS232. 3. IST with dc currents up to 13 kA - with separate interlock line to PC. In odd

points replaced by testing to 600 A.4. Participation in the thermal validation runs, 13 kA, min. 10 - 12 hours –

where applicable (P4L, P6R+L, P8R+L).5. Hardware commissioning with participation of a QPS expert in CCC and two

field teams for tunnel interventions.Note: The order is of importance (example: HV application during 1 can, in particular in case of breakdowns, cause damage to the electronics).

Safety: Tests are always performed with observation/application of the strict rules of condemnation/consignation - with no deviations, no derogations w.r.t. the baseline rule that only the person in possession of the ‘Test Authorization’ (yellow sheet from G. Pastor) are entitled to power the circuit. This is valid also for the HVQ.

Fault Statistics – all 32 systems, 2010, 2011 & 2012. Source: MPE on-call intervention team

TYPE of Faults Number Remarks

OPENING FAULTS 0 Any other number than 0 would be unacceptable

Faults linked to the SYSTEM REDUNDANCY in the opening process

0 Any other number than 0 would be worrying

Faults affecting SYSTEM AVAILABILITY (CLOSING problems, SPURIOUS openings, etc.)

15* This number must be improved!

Note: A number of spurious openings were never reported to the MPE on-call team, therefore not included in this statistics. For RB,UA67 at least 11 such spurious openings occurred.

Year 2010 2011 2012

Number of faults affecting availability

10 2 3

Faults mainly had their origin in auxiliary equipment (µ-switches, relays, fans, cooling station, L.V. power supply) but also due to items sucked-into the breaker, defect contacts, visit of rat and damage to two holding coils)
