We humans long assumed that our visual system stoodat the top of evolutionary success. Our knowledge ofcolour vision was primarily based on what humans see:researchers easily performed experiments on colourperception in humans. Although scientists obtainedsupporting information from a variety of other species byrecording the firing of neurons, we remained unawareuntil the early 1970s that many vertebrates, mostlyanimals other than mammals, see colours in a part ofthe spectrum that is invisible to humans: the ultraviolet. In fact, the discovery of ultraviolet vision began withstudies of insects conducted by Sir John Lubbock, whodiscovered sometime before 1882 that in the presenceof ultraviolet light, ants would pick up their young andcarry them to dark areas or to areas illuminated bylonger wavelengths of light. In the mid-1900s, Karl vonFrisch and his students showed that bees and ants notonly see ultraviolet light as a distinct colour but useultraviolet in skylight as a compass. The finding that agreat number of insects perceive ultraviolet lightmisleadingly gave rise to the idea that this spectralregion provides a private sensory channel that avianpredators like eagles and vultures cannot see. Nothing, however, could have been further from the truth.Subsequent research showed that birds, lizards, turtlesand many fish have ultraviolet receptors in their retinas.
The study carried out by Karl von Frisch and hisstudents revealed that ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
Sir John Lubbock’s findings about ants’ vision wereinaccurate
only certain insects could perceive ultraviolet in theform of a colour spectrum
bees and ants could see ultraviolet as a colour on itsown
many vertebrates had ultraviolet receptors in theirretinas
some animals had difficulty with vision in thepresence of ultraviolet light
It can be understood from the passage that humansused to consider their visual system superior to thatof animals because ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
the evolutionary process was not taken into accountin previous studies
experiments on colour vision did not include anyspecies besides humans
the studies conducted on other species only focusedon the firing of neurons
other mammals were unable to perceive ultravioletlight
research on colour vision was insufficient todemonstrate the complexity of animal perception

certain birds cannot perceive ultraviolet light
some animals have ultraviolet receptors
many insects do not need daylight
only bees and ants can see ultraviolet as a distinctcolour
44. It is stated in the passage that ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
Karl von Frisch pioneered research in ultravioletvision of vertebrates
scientists were unaware of the methods used tostudy animal perception in the past
the firing of neurons was an effective way toexperiment on human vision
until the late 19th century, ultraviolet vision wasunknown to humans

Scientists have urged national leaders for years totackle climate change, based on the assumption that allnations should take steps in harmony for the success oftheir prevention efforts. But as anyone who has watchedthe past 15 years of international climate negotiationscan attest, most countries are still reluctant to takemeaningful steps to lower their production ofgreenhouse gases, much less address issues such ashow to help developing countries protect themselvesfrom the extreme effects of climate change. Mayors andurban managers are taking over as they have a keenersense about how changing weather patterns will affecttheir cities’ political and economic futures. Indeed, withinmonths after Hurricane Katrina’s landfall, the C40 CitiesClimate Leadership Group launched in London inOctober 2005, and the World Mayors Council onClimate Change (WMCCC) got its start in Kyoto thatDecember. As of June 2011, more than 190 mayors andother local authorities, representing some 300 millionpeople from around the world, have also signed avoluntary pact sponsored by the WMCCC to reducegreenhouse gas emissions. They are tackling climatechange, as their cities are suffering from floods, risingsea levels and heat waves. They are innovating ways toreduce carbon dioxide emissions, prevent furtherchanges in weather patterns and benefit fromtransportation systems that protect the environment.
It is obvious from the passage that scientists havelong encouraged national leaders to address theissue of climate change ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
as they believe that prevention efforts require thecoordinated actions of entire nations to be effective
so that developed countries can persistently protectthemselves from the extreme effects of climatechange
with an aim to make developing countries takesignificant steps to reduce their greenhouse gasemissions
because most cities are suffering from catastrophessuch as floods, rising sea levels and heat waves
in order that city leaders and urban managersshould minimize the costs of the measures taken toprevent climate change
It is emphasized in the passage that ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
Hurricane Katrina became the moment ofawakening, especially for national leaders, to reducegreenhouse gas emissions
national leaders have been supporting urbanmanagers to tackle climate change throughsponsored projects
national leaders are better equipped than mayors toplan the control of climate change more successfully
local leaders have often taken better steps thannational leaders to cope with climate change
scientists should first encourage mayors and urbanmanagers, not presidents, to reduce greenhousegas emissions

It can be understood from the passage that shortlyafter the devastation Hurricane Katrina caused in2005, ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
climate negotiations started to focus more on theissues of greenhouse gas emissions
two major alliances of city mayors were formed inorder to combat climate-related problems
national leaders came together to takeunprecedented measures against greenhouse gasemissions
both civic leaders and presidents began to takemore effective and coordinated actions
a voluntary pact was signed to deal with climatechange more efficiently
48. One point made in the passage is that there areevidently extreme effects of climate change, ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
thus the World Mayors Council on Climate Changeprioritized some steps to prevent rising sea levels insome countries
so most countries are increasingly helpingdeveloping nations tackle the climate-relatedproblems
yet the C40 mayors know exactly which countriescan help them to deal with catastrophes
though mayors and urban managers are not makingany attempts to collaborate with national leaders
but most countries seem unwilling to take importantmeasures to lessen their greenhouse gas emissions

Forget drilling into the ocean floor to tap intoever-decreasing supplies of oil, because there couldsoon be a new fuel source beneath the waves –seaweed. A technique has been developed to convertsugars in seaweed into a fuel that can be used to powercars. Biofuels are currently produced from crops suchas corn and sugar cane, but these sources are also indemand for use as food, and their production requireslarge amounts of land, fresh water and fertiliser.Seaweed requires none of these and has the advantageof not containing lignin, a strong strand of sugars thatstiffens plant stalks but is difficult to turn into biofuel.Researchers at Bio Architecture Lab in California havebeen able to produce bioethanol from kombu, an ediblebrown seaweed. Bioethanol can be blended with petroland used in engines with little or no modification. Brownseaweed has high sugar content and also grows morequickly than the red or green species. The only potentialstumbling block is growing enough of the stuff. Severalthousand tonnes are farmed annually for food, but if it isgoing to be used widely as a fuel, billions of tonneswould be required. But Bio Architecture Lab is stillforging ahead, launching a seaweed biofuel pilot projectin 2013. It hopes to commercialize seaweed-sourcedfuels within three to four years.
According to the passage, producing fuel fromseaweed ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
can interrupt drilling for oil under the ocean, as mosttypes of seaweed grow on the surface
is a longer process when compared to producingfuel from other crops
can be more expensive than producing fuel fromcrops such as sugar cane
is a great resource in view of producing fuel fromother sources
remains the only way in which sugars are used ascrops for fuel
It is clearly stated in the passage that seaweed ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
cannot be used alone as a food resource
does not call for resources such as fresh water andland
does not grow quickly in comparison to other crops
is not utilized for commercial purposes
does not retain a great amount of sugar

According to the passage, the bioethanol fromseaweed ----.
A)
B)

E)
is convenient enough to be used alone to fuel cars
causes great amounts of pollution when combinedwith petrol
can be used with little or no change in car engines
needs to be blended with other biofuels to increaseits efficiency
requires using red and green species together
52. One can understand from the passage that ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
much more seaweed needs to be produced toprovide enough fuel
Bio Architecture Lab may suspend its plans for usingseaweed for biofuel
farmers currently producing seaweed will be paid toproduce more
researchers need three to four years before they canobtain biofuel from seaweed
growing red or green seaweed rather than the brownspecies proves to be more beneficial

Astronomers have a reputation for bringing us stunningdiscoveries: new planets and galaxies on the edge ofthe known universe. But now they are on the trail of themost notable finding of all: evidence for a whole newuniverse beyond our own. For millennia, philosophershave insisted everything we see is part of theall-encompassing totality called the universe. And forcenturies, astronomers have been mapping itsimmensity, using more and more powerful telescopes toprobe deeper into space. It seemed clear, however, thatthere was a limit to what they could see, as they wereexamining what was comprehensible for them. Since thediscovery of cosmic expansion, they believed there mustbe a final frontier, but today, there is mountingexcitement that it may be possible to probe beyond thisfar horizon. According to the latest theories incosmology, what has been regarded as the universemight be just one of an infinite number making upsomething far grander – the Multiverse. But theMultiverse model is highly problematic; the biggestdifficulty is that the existence of such parallel universescan be neither verified nor falsified. No less amazing, anorbiting observatory, named Planck, has revealed manyfeatures about our universe such as its age and sizesince it was launched in 2009, and astronomers believeit may be able to travel the Multiverse and do evenmore.
It can be inferred from the passage that theMultiverse model ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
contradicts the idea that human life can bemaintained on other planets
consists of multiple universes which are completelysimilar to each other
has been scientifically approved by a great numberof astronomers
is a hypothetical set of possible universes thattogether comprise all that exists
suggests that each universe affects one another interms of physical laws
According to the passage, there had been alimitation for astronomers, since they ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
did not have sufficient data to improve their studieson the Multiverse
could only study the properties of the universe thatwere observable to them
were not able to understand the consequences ofcosmic expansion
lacked the necessary telescopes to observe theuniverse in detail
had difficulty in collaborating with each other andfollowing accurate scientific methods

For decades, nets and sprays have been the onlyeffective methods for controlling the mosquitoes thatcause malaria. However, Spanish chemist Pilar Mateothinks she can do better with her invention ofembedding pesticides in microcapsules stirred intohouse paints at her Valencia company. The insecticidesare released from the paint slowly, remaining effectivefor two to four years, while sprays need to be reappliedat least every six months. “The paint acts like a vaccinefor houses,” she says. The amounts of pesticidesreleased from the paint are harmless to people but aredevastating to insects, according to the tests made byscientists. The paint has already been approved for usein fifteen countries, including China and England. Mateois seeking approval in the US and a recommendationfrom the World Health Organization. She says she hasreceived offers to buy her patent but refuses to sell out.Instead, her new venture, another company in Africa, will produce it commercially at a factory in Ghana andemploy a great number of workers. “By takingproduction outside Spain, we can reduce the cost andmake it more accessible,” she says. Her idea is to sellthe paint as an affordable alternative to sprays. Afteryears of donating paint to poor people in Latin America,Mateo wants to fund her broader humanitarian efforts.“It’s not just the insects that are the problem”, she says,“It’s the poverty.”

Typing in passwords could be a thing of the past, thanksto technology that can read your thoughts. A newdiscovery brings cognitive biometrics very close toreality. In cognitive biometrics, the response of yournervous system to a stimulus is measured, then used toidentify you. A series of letters or images are flashed upon a screen and your P300 wave – a type of electricalactivity in the brain – is measured using electrodesattached to your head. When a pre-defined word, letteror image is shown, recognition by the user generatestheir signature, P300 wave. Until now, users have beenshown different letters or symbols in different parts of ascreen. But tests at the universities of Essex andWolverhampton have found that the system identifiesindividuals most accurately if all characters appear inthe same location. This also reduces the chances ofcriminals spotting the brain word by tracking eyemovement. As there is no keyboard involved, it is muchharder for someone intent on fraud to get access to apassword. “You still have to keep your passwordsecure,” says Dr. Palani Ramaswamy. “It’s just that theway of entering the password is more resistant to fraud.”Accuracy still needs to be improved before cognitivebiometrics can come into mainstream use. “Onceaccuracy is close to 100 percent, it can be used forhigh-security military applications and financialtransactions as well,” he maintains.
It can be understood from the passage that incognitive biometrics, ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
the P300 wave refers to the nature of the electrodesthat are attached to one’s head
the stimuli are determined beforehand to suitexperimental purposes
one’s nervous system plays a vital role in his or heridentification by a machine
one’s imaginary world created by the electricalactivity in the brain overlaps with reality
there is almost no chance of obtaining a passwordthrough eye tracking
It is pointed out in the passage that ----.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
in cognitive biometrics, it is not the password itselfthat is more secure, but the way it is put in to thecomputer
financial business applications have priority overmilitary applications, as they call for more security
resistance to deceit is measured by how well one’sthoughts could be read by machines
symbols are more successful tools of userrecognition than letters
the P300 wave is gradually being replaced by othermeans of measurement in cognitive biometrics

Interviewer: According to a new report, agricultural pesticides
are causing significant damage to marine life inAustralia.
Ecologist: I’m of the opinion that the sugar cane industry in
the west is particularly to blame.
Interviewer: Why do you say that?
Ecologist: ----
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
The report has also intrigued me, but I don’t agreethat people are not careful with the chemicals beingused.
Farmers there are using pesticides which havemade their way into the ocean.
I think oil spills are the primary threat to the lives ofsea creatures on Australian coasts.
It is argued that producers have no alternatives toprotect their crops apart from pesticides.
In fact, agricultural industry claims that the findingsof the report are based on old data.

The most serious impacts of desertification are likelyto be felt in countries near the Equator.
Huge differences between day- and night-timetemperatures don’t lead to desertification at all.
The worst is that fertile soils become degraded, causing major problems in the field of agriculture.
Desertification affects the livelihoods of manypeople, as it occurs on all continents exceptAntarctica.
A significant policy change in managementapproaches is needed to prevent or reversedesertification.

Albert Einstein once commented that “a person whohas not made his great contribution to sciencebefore the age of 30 will never do so.” ---- Now,scientists are making Nobel-worthy discoveries atmore advanced ages than in the past. BenjaminJones, an expert in innovation at the Kellogg Schoolof Management at Northwestern University andBruce Weinberg of the Ohio State Universityanalyzed 525 Nobel Prizes awarded in physics, chemistry and medicine between 1900 and 2008.With few exceptions – notably quantum mechanicsdiscoveries of the 1920s and 1930s – the trendacross all fields is toward researchers being olderwhen they produce their greatest work.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
In the case of a scientific revolution whereestablished knowledge may be a hindrance ratherthan a help, the young can be more competent.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek is best known for his workon the improvements of the microscope in 1648, atthe age of 16.
Einstein always appeared to have a clear view of theproblems of physics and the determination to solvethem.
This may have been an accurate reflection ofphysics in his time, but it is no longer the case forphysics or any other field.
Inventions tell something about the inventor’s placein society and his closeness to certain kind ofproblems.

In air, light is refracted as it passes through thecornea at the front of the eye, and then again as ittravels through the lens. The lens is mainly there toprovide fine adjustment because the cornea is fixed;in fact, two thirds of the focusing power of the eye issupplied by the cornea. But underwater, therefractive index of the cornea is virtually the sameas the water in front of it, and it loses almost all ofits focusing power. The lens has a higher refractiveindex, but it cannot compensate enough, so youbecome extremely long-sighted. ----
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
If you’re short-sighted, the effect is diminished, butnobody is short-sighted enough to eliminate it.
Provided that they are given enough time,long-sighted people can generally focus on close-byobjects, but only for very short periods.
Studies reveal that short-sightedness is positivelycorrelated to the level of education in a society.
Diving underwater and remaining there is actually amore sophisticated series of processes than itseems.
Scientists believe that living away from the sea hashelped mankind to develop their perception of depth.

In the 1960s, human beings finally left the Earth.First they flew outside the atmosphere, then orbitedthe Earth and in the end, as the decade was drawingto a close, they went to the Moon. ---- After theMoon, the plan was to step on Mars, and land thefirst crews there by 1986. However, sending humansacross the gulf of interplanetary space has provenharder than the explorers thought.
A)
B)

Studies have shown that radiation in deep spaceposes deadly hazards to astronauts.
Among the discoveries about Mars, one stands outabove all others: the possible liquid water on itssurface.
After its first close-up picture in 1965, spacecraftvoyages to Mars have challenged humans’perception of what makes a planet work.
The Viking Mission between 1976 and 1984consisted of two orbiting spacecraft, each carrying alander deployed to Mars.
Yet since then, humans have done relatively little toadvance the crewed exploration of space.

Diamond is the crystalline phase of carbon formedat very high pressures. It generally crystallizes atdepths of 135 to 200 kilometres and at temperaturesof 1,100 to 1,200 Celsius. It is the most highly valuedgemstone; exceptional stones can fetch upward of$500,000 per carat and individual pieces can bevalued at more than $20 million. ---- But today, thethree top diamond-producing nations by value areBotswana, Russia and Canada, with significantproduction from Angola and South Africa.
A)
B)
C)
D)
E)
Mineral inclusions within diamonds allow calculationof pressures and temperatures of the environment inwhich they were formed.
The Golkonda region in south-central India was theoriginal source of diamonds for hundreds of yearsuntil discoveries were made in different parts of theworld.
Although there are dozens of gemstones, among thebest known and most important is sapphire, mostlyfound in Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Besides its beauty, diamond’s exceptional physicalproperties, unusual formation and value haveprompted abundant research.
Part of the reason that gemstones reach high valuesis their rarity, which also makes them coveted bygeologists.

What has changed today is that science tries torespond objectively to the evidence that it finds, even if that evidence goes against the receivedwisdom.
The secrets of the atomic world remained hiddenfrom us for centuries due to the limitation of ourinstruments and our thinking.
At the heart of the reply lies our growing awarenessof the way in which all substances are ultimatelycomposed of countless tiny particles.
For Newton, his work brought him closer to his goalof seeing the mind of God, but for science it marks arare turning point.
The history of science is often told as stories ofindividual brilliant minds and flashes of inspiration.
