“DIVERSITY MATTERS”:

2014 MICHIGAN

MINORITY PROCUREMENT

CONFERENCE AND

TRADE FAIRTHOUSANDS OF MBES AND THE NATION’S TOP CORPORATIONS TRAVELED TO THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD TO ATTEND THE 33RD ANNUAL MICHIGAN MINORITY PROCUREMENT CONFERENCE AND TRADE FAIR - THE STATE’S TOP BUSINESS NETWORKING EVENT AND PREMIER TRADE FAIR.

The resiliency, innovation and progressive

thinking that has spearheaded Detroit’s

economic comeback was reflected in the

2014 Michigan Minority Procurement

Conference and Trade Fair with a message

that continued to propel MBE development

and opportunities. “Diversity Matters” was

this year’s theme, echoing the council’s

commitment to promoting the economic

growth of MBEs.

Held annually in Detroit at the Cobo Center,

the three-day event featured an action-packed

trade floor with over 300 booths, as well as

a comprehensive professional development

program designed to provide businesses with

best practices and insight for the upcoming

business year.

From Tuesday to Thursday, the energy

throughout the Cobo Center was at a fever

pitch - from the Matchmaking sessions, where

Toyota and other corporate members met

with MBEs to discuss opportunities for future

partnerships, to the day long tradeshow,

which was all about making connections with

over 1,500 attendees in attendance.

The Toyota-sponsored Afterglow Reception

culminated this year’s Procurement Fair,

where attendees enjoyed an evening of great

food, company and music, thanks to Morris

Day & The Time.

This year’s speakers included Reginald

Williams, CEO of Procurement Resources,

who spoke at the conference’s inaugural

Healthcare Initiative Forum, where executives

in the healthcare industry discussed best

practices for supplier diversity in the

healthcare sector. Also in attendance was

Simon Bailey, life coach and author of Shift Your Brilliant: Harness The Power of You, who

gave an insightful and meaningful message at

the Professional Development Lunch Session.

Additionally, Marc Bland, vice president of

diversity and inclusion for R. L. Polk, lead

a dynamic power lunch session during the

trade fair.

TEMA Supplier Diversity Manager John

Munson, Jr. participated in “Effective

Reporting: Best Practices for a Successful

Reporting Session,” one of the event’s several

sessions for corporate members. In this

panel discussion, Munson and peer

leaders from GM, Chrysler, Ford and

Kellogg described how they approached,

developed and implemented meaningful

Tier II diverse spend tracking and

reporting processes. Toyota’s Robert

Young, Purchasing VP and MMSDC

board member, joined Council leaders,

guests and fellow sponsors in the trade

fair’s official ribbon cutting ceremony.

As is seen year after year, the Michigan

Minority Procurement Fair proved to be

yet again a great forum for leadership

development, relationship building,

and more importantly, business growth

opportunities for MBEs. Toyota is

proud to have attended and exhibited at

this event particularly because we share

MMSDC’s dedication to ensuring

Michigan’s MBEs continue to have

access to top quality networking and

business growth events. MMSDC does

an outstanding job of engaging MBEs

and TEMA Supplier Diversity looks

forward to supporting and participating

in this event for many years to come.

“TOYOTA WORKS CLOSELY WITH EACH SUPPLIER

PARTNER TO BUILD OUR VEHICLES TO THE HIGH-

QUALITY, SAFETY AND RELIABILITY STANDARDS

OUR CUSTOMERS EXPECT.”

2014 ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING REFLECTION

AWARDS

In March, TEMA Purchasing hosted its

Annual Business Meeting (ABM) at the

Northern Kentucky Convention Center

in Covington, bringing together over a

thousand attendees representing various

Toyota Tier I suppliers from across North

America.

The annual event gives Toyota an

opportunity to meet with Tier I suppliers

and reinforce our company’s dedication to

developing a diverse and inclusive supplier

base, while also discussing best practices and

setting annual expectations related to the

Annual Purchasing Policy.

One of the most anticipated aspects of

the ABM is always the presentation of

performance awards.As our suppliers

continuously provide outstanding products

and services, these awards offer Toyota an

opportunity to recognize top performance

and excellence in service and commitment to

our supplier standards.

“Toyota works closely with each supplier

partner to build our vehicles to the high-

quality, safety and reliability standards our

customers expect,” said Robert Young, TEMA

Purchasing VP. “We were pleased to award

those in our supply base who go above-and-

beyond. This event emphasizes our mutual

commitment with supplier partners to

continuously improve to build ‘always better

cars’ in North America.”

Since Supplier Diversity is an essential

aspect of our business performance, awards

presented at ABM include the recognition

of Tier I suppliers who met/exceeded the

expectations for the previous year and those

demonstrating exceptional performance in

MBE improvement, MBE development, and

overall superior performance.

This year, twenty-nine suppliers received

“Excellent” awards for their performance in

the Supplier Diversity, value improvement

and quality performance categories. One

MBE supplier, Reyes Amtex Automotive,

was among those honored for excellence in

quality performance.

Headquartered in San Antonio (TX), Reyes Amtex

Automotive is a joint venture of two companies with

a combined 120 years of manufacturing experience. A

subsidiary of Japanese automotive supplier Hayashi Telempu

and headed by Fernando Reyes, the Texas-based company

manufactures floor carpet for Toyota’s Tundra and Tacoma

trucks. Now serving both Japanese and U.S. OEMs, Reyes

Amtex Automotive’s continuous execution of quality

manufacturing is an example many MBEs strive to achieve.

Three Tier I suppliers were honored for their Supplier

Diversity achievements, including Johnson Controls, Inc.,

headquartered in Milwaukee (WI), who won the award for

“Superior” performance in Supplier Diversity. Two Michigan-

based suppliers also received recognition in Supplier Diversity

performance— Continental Automotive Systems for Special

Recognition in MBE Development and Gentex Corporation

for Special Recognition in Improvement.

The “Superior” Performance Award in Supplier Diversity was presented to Johnson Controls, Inc.

SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT

Diversity and inclusion are a top priority for

Toyota, a commitment that extends across all

aspects of our business operations. Toyota’s

Supplier Diversity processes are developed to

ensure our supplier base reflects the diversity

of our team members, strategic partners,

customers and the communities in which we

live and work

Our nation-wide supplier base includes

diverse entrepreneurs, certified M/WBEs

supporting Toyota’s success through their

innovation and expertise. Some are smaller,

local companies, others are larger, national

or even global operations, but each diverse

supplier is chosen to join our supplier base,

because they share our commitment to

excellence.

We thought it would be interesting to shine

the spotlight on several of our suppliers in

each newsletter. In this edition, we introduce

you to Rosa Santana of Integrated Human

Capital and Kirk Lewis of Blue Springs Metals.

Rosa Santana is founder and CEO of

Integrated Human Capital, the Texas-based

independent staffing company she launched

in 2002.

A certified Minority Business Enterprise

(MBE), Woman Business Enterprise (WBE),

and Historically Underutilized Business

(HUB), Integrated Human Capital (IHC)

provides production personnel, administrative

employees, engineers and other professionals

to clients both in the U.S. and Mexico.

With a unique understanding of global

staffing trends, IHC implements integrated,

customized solutions to meet the special

requirements of the United States-Mexico

economic zone.

IHC is currently a Tier II supplier,

Ms. Santana Santana credits her steady

attendance and participation in Toyota’s

annual Opportunity Exchange for IHC’s

ability to secure more than a dozen new

clients and, as a result, further enhance her

relationship as a Tier II supplier.

INSPIRATIONS

Page 11: TEMA NEWSLETTER Q2

Developing MBEs in large dollar

commodities, a historically underutilized

area, has successfully enhanced Toyota’s

Supplier Diversity processes. A great example

is how Kirk Lewis, Chairman and CEO of Blue

Springs Metals, has become an integral steel

processing partner for Toyota.

Headquartered in northeast Mississippi,

Blue Springs Metals is a certified minority

supplier of steel products. In 2003, Toyota

contracted Blue Springs Metals, a joint

ventured company comprised of Mr. Lewis, a

Michigan-based minority partner and Toyota

Tsusho America, to perform a steel processing

operation at our Mississippi plant, Toyota

Motor Manufacturing Mississippi (TMMMS).

The former Director of Finance of The

Bing Group, LLC (a certified minority Tier I

Automotive Supplier), Mr. Lewis also served as

the President of Detroit Automotive Interiors

LLC, a joint venture with a global, multi-

billion dollar Tier 1 automotive supplier. As an

executive in the automotive industry for over

25 years, Mr. Lewis’ experience and expertise

proved valuable in the formation of Blue

Springs Metals in 2003 and the completion

of the company’s first plant in Blue Springs,

Mississippi, which opened last year.T
