Case study

As a joint venture between two large companies with established business models, telkomtelstra was able to create a unique, ‘cloud-rst’ business model akin to a start-up, free of any legacy systems. However, it needed to manage this agile approach by portraying and establishing a level of maturity to serve a range of customers, as well as the security to aide with local compliance. Telstra’s CSX Cloud Platform was a vital rst cog in being able to do this.

The cloud-rst IT systems and applications approach formed a unique opportunity to provide something that hadn’t been previously offered in Indonesia. While this gives the business the speed and agility to respond to local market needs, operating in a hybrid cloud environment meant tighter sovereignty laws were an important consideration as part of establishing the business.

telkomtelstra’s Chief Operating Ofcer Nathan Bell comments, “To be quickly considered a serious player in the Indonesian market, we needed to ensure our business infrastructure was credible and up and running within six months.

Access to technology, resources and the senior executives in our parent companies was invaluable in that regard, particularly when navigating local market nuances around data sovereignty. Without that support, I think it’s highly unlikely that we would have been able to scale to the depth that we have, in such a short space of time.”

Who are they?

telkomtelstra is a joint venture between PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom Indonesia), Indonesia’s largest telecommunications operator, and Telstra Corporation Limited (Telstra), a leading global telecommunications and technology company.

As a start-up company and Indonesia’s rst end-to-end managed services provider, telkomtelstra solves customers’ business challenges by helping to optimise, grow and transform their organisations through managed ICT solutions.

The solution

The right infrastructure

Taking a cloud-rst approach afforded telkomtelstra the exibility to consult and evaluate the functionality offered to customers in line with their business needs. This meant more focus on building applications rather than the physical management of the infrastructure.

Nathan adds, “We don’t need specialists who deal with the storage, servers or networks. All we need to worry about is building better applications that deliver better outcomes to our customers’ business. We know many of our customers can’t afford to spend their resources on infrastructure capability. They want automation in their business processes and need their IT services to simply work.”

This automated cloud-rst approach was delivered at both the back and front ends. Using Telstra’s CSX cloud platform allowed telkomtelstra to create virtual data centres with a choice of shared or dedicated resources, plus a range of add-ons. This allows applications and services to be delivered to customers across Indonesia, from one central resource.

This provided telkomtelstra with a highly consistent level of service for its own customers. Further, components of the service could be quickly provisioned and scaled up or down, enabling telkomtelstra to take full advantage of the cost and exibility benets of the cloud.

At the front end telkomtelstra developed an ‘Innity Portal’, which offers customers large and small a complete view of their business and network performance. This gives them condence that things are working, so that they can focus on serving their own customers.

A further consideration for setting up the business was the lack of maturity of the Indonesian cloud market, compared with other markets in Asia such as Singapore and Hong Kong. This meant higher levels of education and an established cloud platform were required, to instill condence among customers.

The right people

While the physical infrastructure of a business is important, telkomtelstra requires people who can adapt to the changing landscape of a start-up that’s growing quickly. The company needs people who challenge assumptions of what’s possible, imagining and testing new approaches to deliver better results.

Nathan adds, “We’ve created a very collaborative culture in the way we go about serving our customers, solving problems and building new capabilities. We feel that we’ve set a new standard in the Indonesian IT market.”

The benets

The growth of the customer base has been phenomenal in the last year, due to the cloud-based architecture approach and the ability to rapidly scale.

Nathan adds, “As a start-up, we didn’t have legacy systems to deal with. This meant a focus on serving customers as opposed to spending time dealing with backend infrastructure. By using Telstra’s CSX cloud platform, we saved huge amounts of time and money in getting to market, which we’re able to pass on to our customers.”

telkomtelstra empowers businesses with condence. For customers, that means access to their data and visibility to their network are incredibly fast, simple and always available through the Innity Portal.

Emanuel Andhy, the general manager of cloud computing at Dexa Group, a telkomtelstra customer, comments, “telkomtelstra monitors and proactively takes action on network incidents that occur on Dexa’s network, even when Dexa sometimes cannot frequently monitor or capture a network incident. This situation is very crucial in order to maintain business continuity.”

Nathan concluded, “I have worked for a number of different companies, but I have never seen a new business established in just six months. Building such a diverse organisation and a unique culture which resonates with the market makes me feel extremely privileged to be part of what we’re doing here.”
