In May, I had the distinct honor of meeting Moshe Safdie, the renowned architect of the Jepson Center for the Arts. In his first visit back to Savannah since the Jepson’s grand opening in 2006, Mr. Safdie was able to see his vision come to life as visitors filled the galleries, friends met and mingled in the light-filled atrium, and children learned and played in the ArtZeum.

During the summer, I met several hundred new neighbors at our summer camps and Free Family Days. Visitors to Savannah seemed to delight in the diversity of our gallery offerings and offered rave reviews of their experiences at the Owens-Thomas House.

Summer’s end brings an abundance of exciting exhibitions and programming to Telfair Museums, and particularly the Jepson. There is truly “something for everyone” at the Jepson, and I am excited to engage with the diverse audiences we will see this fall.

September boasts one of Savannah’s most anticipated events. The Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery in Tibet are visiting the museum for the first time since 2009. The monks perform special ceremonies and construct a mandala sand painting in the Jepson’s Eckburg Atrium over the course of seven days. On the final day, they destroy the mandala and lead a procession to the Savannah River. I hope you’ll join me in watching this beautiful experience unfold.

Our Allure of the Near East exhibition is tantalizing viewers. Rarely does a museum visitor have the opportunity to see dozens of objects spanning 20 centuries and almost a dozen countries, all in one gallery. As part of Telfair’s commitment to strengthening collaborations nationwide, we were happy to partner with the Huntington Museum in West Virginia to mount this show in exchange for their presentation of Telfair’s well-known Kahlil Gibran exhibit.

Our main event this fall is a bold and brilliant sensory experience of paintings by one of the most influential American artists of the early 20th century, Robert Henri. Organized by Telfair’s curatorial team, Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of Spain is the first exhibition to explore the artist’s Spanish paintings. Henri championed the realistic portrayal of contemporary

life, and his paintings reflect his fascination with Spain’s sunny climate, ancient culture and spirited citizens. Furthering our commitment to national excellence, the exhibition has received major support from the National Endowment for the Arts and other prestigious national funders and will tour nationally after its debut at the Jepson, traveling to the San Diego Museum of Art and the Mississippi Museum of Art.

To complement Henri’s compelling work, we offer a variety of fun and educational programs this fall. Join us for a series of four lectures that enhance our understanding of Henri’s work, made possible by the support of the Telfair Academy Guild, or enjoy a self-guided bilingual audio tour of the show. We’re also kicking up our heels for salsa dance classes, flamenco workshops and performances that help us appreciate the bohemian dancers and singers Henri portrays in Spanish Sojourns. The new Jepson Café is open and will serve us delicious Sangria and tapas in honor of Spain!

I also invite you to experience a provocative Andy Warhol show at the Jepson this fall. Warhol/JFK: November 22, 1963–A Selection of Andy Warhol Prints from the Herbert Brito Collection marks the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, from the point of view of one of the world’s most important artists. The nation’s collective obsession with JFK’s assassination and its aftermath was a source of constant creative output for Andy Warhol, who was fascinated by the potent combination of celebrity and tragedy.

In November, visitors to the Telfair Academy will be greeted by a new exhibition exploring the important history of the institution. Mansion to Museum will feature original artifacts and photographs that tell the story of Mary Telfair, the architectural transformation from private family home to the first public art museum in the South, and the founding of our permanent collection. This project is part of our effort to enhance visitor understanding of our historic sites, and I’m sure that even long-time members will learn something new!

Telfair Museums would not be able to offer these spectacular exhibitions and engaging lectures, performances and classes without our supporters. I am deeply grateful to our members, many of whom spend hours volunteering. I also want to thank our major corporate donors that have come aboard in the past few months. My great thanks to Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation for sponsoring all elements of Spanish Sojourns, including educational components. I also thank the Georgia Power Foundation, Inc. and the AGL Resources Foundation for joining with the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs in supporting our Free Family Days, which we are now able to offer each month. Your sponsorship has made an immediate, lasting impact to our efforts to bring the joy of art to everyone.

Adios! Lisa Grove

Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of SpainOctober 18, 2013 – March 9, 2014 / Jepson Center

Spanish Sojourns is the first museum exhibition dedicated to the Spanish paintings of Robert Henri (1865-1929), one of the most influential American artists of the early 20th century. A leading proponent of the urban realist style that characterized the art of the Ashcan School, Henri was widely celebrated as a painter and a teacher.

Henri traveled to Spain seven times between 1900 and 1926 and produced a substantial body of work inspired by that country’s citizens and culture. His portraits present a dazzling cross-section of Spanish society—famous dancers, dashing bullfighters, spirited gypsies, blind street singers and weathered old peasants—as he masterfully captures the spirit of unique individuals.

Henri’s Spanish canvases were well received during his lifetime; many quickly found homes in prominent museum collections around the country. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City purchased Henri’s Spanish Gypsy in 1914, its first acquisition by an Ashcan School artist, and has loaned it to the Telfair for Spanish Sojourns. Other American museums also have made major loans, culminating in a groundbreaking exhibition that presents more than forty of Henri’s Spanish works. Together, the paintings reveal Henri’s ongoing commitment to portraying the essence of Spanish tradition.

The exhibition has been in development for over five years and was inspired by one of the most beloved paintings in the Telfair’s collection. La Madrileñita (see cover), which typically hangs in the Telfair Academy, originally purchased directly from Robert Henri for the Telfair by Gari Melchers in 1919.

Spanish Sojourns will tour nationally, traveling to the San Diego Museum of Art and the Mississippi Museum of Art after its time in Savannah. The exhibition has been awarded major grants from prestigious institutions including the National Endowment for the Arts.

Spanish Sojourns is accompanied by a fully illustrated hardcover catalogue that presents new scholarship on Henri and places his work in the context of the other American artists, architects and writers who were inspired by Spain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Spanish Sojourns is organized by Telfair Museums.

This exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Alice and Bob Jepson, the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J. Horowitz Foundation for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Funding for the exhibition catalogue has been provided by the Telfair Academy Guild.

Warhol/JFK: November 22, 1963 A Selection of Andy Warhol Prints from the Herbert Brito Collection October 18, 2013–March 9, 2014 / Jepson Center

Jackie II, 1966, © 2013 The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc./Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York.

To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy this November, Telfair Museums presents Warhol/JFK: November 22, 1963, a thought-provoking exhibition that explores the events of that defining moment in history from the perspective of one of America’s most important modern artists, Andy Warhol.

On view are two bodies of work created by Warhol: a 1966 double portrait of the grieving widow Jacqueline Kennedy, Jackie II, and the rarely seen print portfolio Flash–November 22, 1963, which is comprised of a series of 11 screenprints with text that replicates newswire copy from the assassination and its aftermath. A private collector provided the works on special loan to Telfair Museums.

Film Screening: "The Eternal Frame" (1975) by Ant Farm and T.R. uthcoNovember 13, 6 pm, Jepson CenterFor California art collectives T.R. Uthco and Ant Farm, the iconic event that signified the ultimate collusion of historical spectacle and media image was the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. This restored video begins with an excerpt from the only filmed record of Kennedy's assassination: Super-8 footage shot by Abraham Zapruder, a bystander on the parade route. Using those infamous few frames of film as their starting point, the artists construct a multi-leveled event that is simultaneously a live performance spectacle, a taped re-enactment of the assassination, a mock documentary and, perhaps most insidiously, a simulation of the Zapruder film itself. Performed in Dealey Plaza in Dallas — the actual site of the assassination — the re-enactment elicits bizarre responses from the spectators, who react to the simulation as though it were the original event.

“providing a Window on a national Tragedy: jFK, Dallas and the Media” Lecture by Dr. Bruce MallardNovember 21, 6 pm, Jepson CenterOn the eve of the anniversary of the JFK assassination, Telfair presents a lecture by Dr. Bruce Mallard, who will discuss the assassination and the role of the media in public perception of the event. Dr. Mallard is an instructor of Political Science at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

The nation’s collective obsession with JFK’s assassination was a source of constant creative output for Andy Warhol, who was fascinated by the potent combination of celebrity and tragedy. He began his series of "Jackie paintings" in response to the media blitz that followed the incident. He chose photographs used in media ac-counts before and after the event and cropped them to focus on the president's widow, Jacqueline Kennedy.

He created the Flash–November 22, 1963 portfolio of prints in 1968 to depict the continuing media spec-tacle surrounding JFK’s assassination. Warhol named the portfolio for “news flash” Teletype texts that re-ported the assassination and its aftermath—the first major news event played out live on TV. The Flash portfolio includes a series of eleven silkscreens depicting a grinning president, a presidential seal with bul-let holes through it, and other symbolic representations of that tragedy. The portfolio’s cover includes an image of the New York World-Telegram front page with the headline “President Shot Dead.” Warhol uses screenprinted Teletype texts as “wrappers.”

Warhol's use of media images and text underlines the notion that our collective understanding of the images is a result of a media construction and not our own personal emotional response. Fifty years later, the powerful role the media has to describe and shape public understanding of current events remains relevant.

Andy Warhol, whose name is synonymous with Pop Art, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In May 1999, ARTnews magazine named Warhol one of the twenty-five most influential artists—ever. Today, his work is included in major art museums throughout the world and has influenced generations of con-temporary artists.

Mansion to MuseumOpens november 15, 2013 / Telfair academyMansion to Museum highlights the incredible story of the transformation of the Telfair Academy site from a home to an “Academy of Arts and Sciences.” The exhibit introduces visitors to Mary Telfair and the Telfair family, founding museum director Carl Brandt, the enslaved family who worked at the house, architects William Jay and Detlef Lienau, early artistic advisor Gari Melchers and others.

Mary Telfair’s vision for a museum in Savannah likely evolved over a period of years or decades. During her travels, Telfair learned of many other museums in America and abroad, such as Italy’s Capitoline Museum in Rome and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, which she visited with her sister Margaret Telfair Hodgson and brother-in-law William Brown Hodgson during their 1851 tour of Europe.

Designed by Telfair staff, Mansion to Museum serves as an orientation gallery for everyone who visits the museum. Original objects associated with the Telfair family and early museum development, including paintings, sculpture, furniture and architectural elements, provide a visual connection to the story. The exhibit also includes hands-on activities for children and adults.

More broadly, Mansion to Museum provides context to the visitor, with regard to the museum phenomenon in the late-nineteenth century when American museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1870) and the Museum of Fine Arts in both Boston (1870) and Philadelphia (1876) first opened.

The Monks Return! Tibetan Monks Residency and Sand Mandala PaintingSeptember 23–29, 2013 / Jepson Center’s Eckburg atrium The Tibetan Buddhist monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery return to the Jepson Center for the first time in more than four years to create an exquisite sand mandala painting as part of a weeklong residency. Programs related to the monks’ residency include a variety of activities for all ages and attract thousands of interested onlookers and participants.

The residency begins September 23 with an opening ceremony of chants, after which they draw the mandala. Visitors may watch the monks at work in the museum atrium during normal daytime museum hours September 24-28, other than lunchtime. The museum is offering an evening lecture by the monks and two community sand painting activities for children. At the closing ceremony on September 29, the monks destroy the mandala and distribute some of the sand to the audience. They invite the audience to proceed with them to the Savannah River, where they release the remaining sand into the river to disperse the mandala’s healing energies throughout the world.

Telfair Museums does not permit professional photography of the sand mandala and programs. For the closing ceremony, Telfair will provide overflow seating with live video in the Jepson Center auditorium. Space is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

All events are free and open to the public thanks to funding provided by the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs.

Ages: Adult Instructor: Kip Bradley Wednesdays 12–2 pm, September 18–November 6 Members $95, Non-members $120A formative element in the development of artist Robert Henri’s greatest work was his introduction to a pocket painting kit and practice of creating pochades, small studies with focus on atmosphere and color. In this class, we explore a variety of sketching and painting kits and technical practices. This book-club class explores Henri’s teachings from his famous classic for artists, “The Art Spirit,” compiled by one of his students, Margery A. Ryerson, from her notes taken during his classes. This course coincides with Telfair Museums’ opening of the Robert Henri exhibit on October 18. Materials required.

Teen CouncilTelfair Museums is excited to announce that the Teen Council for 2013-2014 is in place. We received many excellent applications from students across Savannah and have assembled a group of 21 enthusiastic high schoolers who range in age from 14 to 17.

Council members and their parents had a chance to meet one another in July and learn more about the upcoming year. The Teen Councilors return in September to kick off nine months of creating events, workshops and projects for their peer group and encouraging teens to connect with art on a personal level. We offer a hearty welcome to the newest members of our team!

Become a Telfair Docent!Training Begins September 9! Docents are volunteers who inform visitors how to better appreciate and understand the Telfair Museums’ architecture, permanent collection and traveling exhibits. Docents work in the Telfair Academy and the Jepson Center, leading tours and assisting with educational programs for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

As a docent, you enrich your own understanding of the visual arts while serving your community by sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Docents also receive special training from curators and artists with each new exhibit the Telfair hosts. Please contact Jillian Luse at 912.790.8827 or [email protected] for more information on becoming a docent. We hope to see you this fall!

PULSE 2014 Save the Date! January 29–February 2, 2014

Yale UpdateIn the last issue of Telfair Magazine, we were proud to announce the Telfair’s Owens-Thomas House had been selected as one of only five institutions to participate in the 2013-14 Yale Public History Institute.

In July, Telfair staff members Tania Sammons, Paulette Thompson and Chris Surber

spent an intense week of study on the subject of slavery at Yale University’s Gilder Lehrman Center. The trio brought back important ideas generated by working with the other participants. Colleagues include Yale history professors, curators and staff from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and staff from four other American historic sites—Appomattox Court House National Historic Park, Virginia; Cape Fear Museum, North Carolina; Crailo State Historic Site, New York; and Drayton Hall, South Carolina. A representative from the National Museum of Denmark also took part. Additionally, several graduate students from American universities contributed and will continue to work with Telfair staff. We congratulate our team for their efforts to further implement material on the enslaved and free people who once worked and lived at the Owens-Thomas House, Telfair mansion and in Savannah.

11th Annual Gray’s Reef Ocean Film Festival Opening night, September 12, 2013, 6:30 pm–8:45 pm / Jepson CenterPlease join Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary at the Jepson Center for a screening of the documentary film, Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Journalist and filmmaker Angela Sun takes us on a chilling journey of discovery. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch exists thousands of miles away from civilization, near the remote Midway Atoll. It has become a huge syphon for plastics from three

distant continents. Meet scientists, researchers, influencers and volunteers who shed light on the effects of our rabid plastic consumption. Prior to the main feature, Gray’s Reef will screen two intriguing short films: Oceans at the Tipping Point, narrated by Harrison Ford, and The Majestic Plastic Bag. All films and lectures are free and open to the public. Learn more at www.graysreef.noaa.gov
