DESCRIPTION

In 2003-04 I made a presentation looking into the future of telecom / IT. Interesting to look back at that time.

Objective

• Share some developments in IT / Telecom space• Examine how these will affect our future

– Individual level• Possible way to determine what developments will

come.• But first…

Page 3: TeleCosm

Why now?

• IT, Internet and Telecom developments continue to flummox the “real” world!– Will my ERP become obsolete?– Do I have to advertise on websites?– Will my fan really talk to my Air conditioner?– Will my refrigerator order groceries?

• These were “possible future scenarios”• That future is now upon us…

Page 4: TeleCosm

Why now?

• Bandwidth problem is solved!– Fiber-optic bandwidth is reached substantial levels.

• Last Mile problem is solved!– WiFi is here! And so is WiMax!– 3G CDMA networks offer unparalleled bandwidth!

• Yet, we still have redundant business models– Voice networks carrying data (Fax) instead of data

networks carrying voice(Net telephony) !– We still pay through nose for Mobile Call yet FM radio

on same device is free!

Page 5: TeleCosm

Developments

• The magic of electromagnetic waves– Frequency range from 0 (DC Current) to 1015 Hz

(Cosmic Rays)– We are currently using less than 1% of the same!

• 2 way wireless industry frequency usage-– Before 1970 = 100 MHz– 1970 = 400MHz– 1980 = 800 MHz– 1990 = 2 GHz

Developments

• Jan 2000 Lucent tested point to point wireless light transmission of 1.5Gigabits/sec.

• JDS Uniphase break-through for all optic-networking

• Qualcomm CDMA – Delivers 10 times more capacity as compared to GSM.– As usage increases the bandwidth increases!!– 3G CDMA delivers Gigabits/sec download speeds!!

Device - Components

• Processor

• Memory / Storage

• Human Interface

• Identification

• Power unit

• Network Interface

Page 8: TeleCosm

Processors

• Processors are improving day-by-day• Nano-technology

– More transistors on thinner the silicon chips– Faster processing at lower heat generation.

• The limit is the speed of light!• We are nearing that limit!

Page 9: TeleCosm

Memory / Storage• The Remote-Storage model!

– Voice mail messages are stored on a central database– Your email!

• What is stored in the device and what is stored away is decided by bandwidth!!

• As the bandwidth improves:– You wont need your 40GB HDD (?)– You will need mobile storage units

• memory sticks / cartridges etc.

• Fetch as you require storage is the order of the day!!

Page 10: TeleCosm

Human Interface

• Second weakest area considering developments.– Still use A4 format for documents!– The screens of mobile devices are too small!

• Developments in projection technology• “Best Accessible Display” model

– Device connects to rented display in• Car• Display booths• Theater halls• Computer screens• Television screens

Page 11: TeleCosm

Identification

• Any network devices have identifiers.– Cell phones have SIMs– Computers have network accounts.

• Identifiers are first step for security• High security transactions can cash-in!• Beware the day cell phones integrate with:

– Fingerprint scanner– IRIS Scanner

Page 12: TeleCosm

Power

• Most mobile devices are starved of power.• We cannot load up applications on the cell phone

– As it consumes power– Makes the cell phone heavy / unwieldy

• Need for standardized power plugs!• What else?

Page 13: TeleCosm

Rahul Deodhar 13

Network Interface

• Helps device “tap” into the network• Bandwidth developments are trying to make the

“tap” dumber!• Moving towards always on internet connections!

– It wasn’t the case as last-mile was restricted!– With last mile problem solved always on is natural

state for network connections.

The Devices• Computers

– Desk tops– Laptops– Palmtops / PDAs

• iPods / MP3 players• Phones Cellular / Wireless / land phones• Radios• Pagers• Special purpose Equipments

– ATMs – Card Readers– GPS units– Cash registers etc.

Page 15: TeleCosm

The mobile!

• Devices / functions added to the mobile phone:– Watch– Laser pointer!– Organizer– Torch– Radio– Camera

• What next?

Page 16: TeleCosm

Rahul Deodhar 16

Who decides?• Bandwidth as Ether

– Independent of devices– Frequency independent– Data form independent

• Information will decide what functionalities are added to “mobiles”.– If reading books takes off “mobiles” will have a

reader!• For every application that takes off we buy a new

mobile!!• Or…

Page 17: TeleCosm

Rahul Deodhar 17

Future of Mobiles• “Mobiles” as we know them today will reduce to

combination of – Great processor– Little memory– Dumb “tap”– Security device

• Great Processor will be able to do host of things!• Little memory will hold the software to help the processor

do things• Dumb tap will help enhance bandwidth efficiencies.• Security device will help read fingerprints or irises to

authorize transactions.

Page 18: TeleCosm

Rahul Deodhar 18

Future of Mobiles

• Storage will be external– iPods

• Display– Small display will be standard– With capability of processor and software “mobile” can

connect to cinema hall projectors!!
