With telecom technologies changing rapidly, there isa need to thoroughly understand the capabilities,limitations, and implications as each new system isadopted. This module sets out the emergingpicture logically – tackling the building blocks first,before looking at the different access and corenetwork systems in more detail.

The picture is built up from the basics to include theway in which the different technologies andelements interact to provide the overall userexperience. For the mobile technologies, weconcentrate on the 3GPP family, and theevolutionary path through GSM, GPRS, EDGE, 3GW-CDMA and HSxPA, and onto LTE and alsoincluding WiMAX. PROGRAMME DIRECTORSTony Wakefield is Training Director at theTelecoms Academy. Tony started his career intelecoms in 1981 with British Telecom, and nowheads up the Informa Telecoms Academy. Hetrains across a wide range of subjects, includingin-depth engineering training, and as ProgrammeDirector on the Telecoms Mini MBA and moreadvanced programmes. Tony has a degree inElectronics and Physics from LoughboroughUniversity, and is a full Member of the Institute ofLeadership and Management.

Alan Mayne, Training Manager, has a wealth ofexperience in telecommunications and IT – havingpreviously worked for BT, DEC, and Ericsson,where he had responsibility for supporting theGSM Network roll-out for a UK operator. Alan wasalso Training Manager for the Ericsson UK trainingcentre, moving to the Telecoms Academy in 2001.He presents on a range of technical and businesscourses, and has full responsibility for theTelecoms Mini MBA programmes.

Dave McNally, Senior TelecommunicationsTrainer, began his career as a fully qualifiedCommunications Officer and Senior Engineer withCable and Wireless, Dave now oversees theTelecoms Academy’s suite of advancedtechnology programmes which includes LTE andWiMAX. His huge experience and knowledge, aswell as his flexible and dynamic presentation skillsmeans he is also a very capable ProgrammeDirector on a range of telecoms managementprogrammes.

Paul Kilby offers over 25 years experience inTelecoms & IT. He has extensive management,regulatory and project experience, holding a BEnghonours degree and an MBA (Cranfield). Pauleffectively conveys technical and businessconcepts to his delegates, whatever theirbackground. Specialising in Modern Business &Telecoms Networks, he has special technicalinterests within 3/4G Air Interface & Infrastructure,SS7 over IP, & HSPA.

Dave Bowler has an extremely strongtelecommunications training background, havinggained a great deal of experience managingtraining for Cable and Wireless and MercuryCommunications. He focuses primarily onadvanced technology and business programmes.Dave oversees the Telecoms Academy DistanceLearning portfolio, but also delivers a very widerange of training programmes to both technicaland nontechnical audiences.

Sue Uglow is a strategy and marketing specialistwho oversees the Telecoms Academy portfolio ofmarketing programmes. She has an MBA fromHenley Management College and is anexperienced visiting lecturer on strategy, marketingand telecoms with UK business schools anduniversities. Sue has also been a full timetelecoms analyst with Ovum and Gartner Group,and continues to follow the market closely.

Paul O’Leary is a highly experienced andprofessionally qualified Training andDevelopment professional. His expertise lies inan ability to quickly assimilate, present andarticulate the capabilities of technology into thebusiness benefits to be gained by customers.This calls for an agile and flexible approach inunderstanding both the technologies and thecustomer’s requirements. The experiencegained throughout his career, working for BT,Rockwell and Cisco Systems, enables him toenhance his training delivery with manyanecdotes and real life examples which addreal credence and gravitas, thereby enrichingthe learning experience for his delegates.

PROGRAMME PRESENTERSHelena Boschi has worked as anorganisation specialist for sixteen years withcompanies including British Airways, Cable &Wireless, Royal Bank of Scotland andAccenture focussing on leadership, cross-cultural communication and teamwork. Helenabrings a depth of research and knowledge toher programs but focuses on the practical,enabling participants to apply concepts andideas to their own organisational environments.

Stephen Brookson specialises in theprovision of tailored finance training. Hequalified as a chartered accountant in 1980with KPMG and, after a period in industry,joined a leading organisation in the provision oftraining for chartered accountants in practice.He then joined Ernst & Young for a number ofyears as a consultant. An independentconsultant – he develops training in the publicand private sectors.

Alan Thompson is a Chartered Accountantwith more than 10 years of experience in thefinancial management of companies, as well asadvising businesses of all sizes in financialmanagement. Alan’s speciality is talking tobusinesses in language they can understand,and in making the financial information relevantto the individual businesses. He ensures that thebusiness owners know what they need to knowabout their business, and makes sure that theyhave the tools to manage their businesseseffectively and uses his informal, jargon-free styleto pass important concepts to his audience.

Eddie Chauncy studied at Cambridge beforetraining as a Chartered Accountant andspending over 15 years in senior financial rolesfor companies such as Microsoft, Ericsson andTelewest Broadband. Initially working withEricsson’s international telecoms training centre,Eddie specialised in helping others to developtheir financial skills, particularly in the telecomsand hi-tech sectors. He runs highly enjoyableand engaging courses for telecoms operatorsand technology companies as part of theTelecoms Academy Team.

Chris Dickin was trained as a managementaccountant with the Rolls-Royce aerospacedivision in Derby, UK. Academically, he qualifiedas a professional accountant and gained aMasters degree in financial control. Practically, hehas a wide experience of industry and commerceincluding senior positions in the finance functionof several major companies.

Gordon Raitt is an international managementconsultant specialising in the development ofeffective relationships at all levels within anorganisation. He has almost 20 years experiencedesigning and delivering programmes that focuson leadership, motivation, teambuilding and thedevelopment of customer lifetime value.

Mike Walshe has worked in EmployeeRelations, HR and general management in arange of companies for twenty five yearsspecialising in leadership development andperformance management.
