SAINT KATHRYN PARISH

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As we enter into this Holy Week, all of us who take our faith seriously are probably asking ourselves, “how well did I do this Lent?” For many people, we can do a spiritual checklist to determine if we’ve fasted on the right days, how well we did with our Lenten sacrifices, our observance of the Friday abstinence from meat, and all of the “externals” like giving up chocolate or coffee or alcohol. We might be at the point of patting ourselves on the back for making it this far into Lent with few or no “slips,” and looking forward to next week when we enjoy the fifty days of feasting after forty days of fasting. And if we have been diligent in our Lenten observance, we should be able to say that we’ve done well.

But how have these Lenten disciplines prepared us for this Holy Week? Have we been good about the exter-nal acts of penitence without any kind of inner, spiritual transformation? Have the externals overshadowed a lack of charity or caused others to sin because our attitude has been so poor? Have we perhaps become more selfish than self-sacrificing during this season? All of that “stuff” that we do for Lent is intended to purify us of self so that we may be more open to experience the dying and rising of Jesus Christ in our own hearts.

Lent is both a beautiful and difficult season. When we take full advantage of the sacrament of Penance, par-ticipate in Eucharistic Adoration, celebrate the Eucharist more regularly, bring the spirit of Lent into our homes, Easter becomes an even greater experience of new life and resurrection for us.

But this is the final week of Lent and by week’s end, we will enter into a whole different fast—no longer the Lenten fast, but the great Paschal Fast. The Church so desires that her children will participate together as a fam-ily/community that she gives us three days to walk through the entire mystery of Christ’s dying and rising. Some will see Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday as some kind of “marathon,” but the Church sees these days as one continual liturgy. I will admit to you that these days are not for the faint of heart. These are days that help us to walk with the Lord through the commemoration of His gift of the Eucharist to His saving death on the cross, to the glory of His resurrection. These days are so important in the life of every Catholic that the Church gives us her most beautiful, meaningful celebrations. It’s hard to fathom that not everyone will partici-pate in these days. In these days, we remember the story of our family of faith and we are diminished when the whole family isn’t together. How sad for those who absent themselves from the family gathering!

The full schedule for Holy Week is found later in today’s bulletin. Just as a reminder that Good Friday is a day of strict fast and abstinence from all meat and meat products. What does a strict fast mean? We are permit-ted one full meal and two smaller meals on this day. The two smaller meals should be less or equal to the one full meal. We refrain from eating in between meals, and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted throughout the day. Of course, for those with medical concerns or for those who do heavy labor, there is flexibility with the fast, but not with abstinence. Neither the fast nor abstinence should be taken lightly on this day—as a matter of fact, it is considered a mortal sin not to observe this day with the rigor that the Church prescribes. Although we live in a world and a culture that seems to become more relativistic (meaning “I” make my own decisions, thank you very much), such a lack of regard for the minimal demands that the Church places on us this day really does separate us from perfect unity with the Lord and with His Church.

Monday, April 10th will be the final day for confessions before Easter. We’ve celebrated the sacrament of Pen-ance every day in the morning and evening during Lent, so I cannot promise that those who have waited until now to go to confession will be able to “get in.” That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try! But if you see me alone hearing confessions and you’re in line at a few minutes before 7:00 p.m., please understand that I may not be able to help you out.

I hope that I’ll see many of you for Tenebrae on Monday evening and that all of us with gather together for the great Triduum liturgy on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil or Sunday.

A Blessed Triduum to you all!

Until next week...God bless! Father Joe

CONFESSIONS AND EASTER DUTY Confes-

sions will be heard on Palm Sunday from 3:00-3:45 p.m. and on Monday of Holy Week (April 10) follow-ing the morning Mass until 10:00 a.m. and again from 6:00-6:50 p.m. This will be the last opportunity for confession before Easter. Please be mindful that Fa-ther Joe may not have time to hear everyone’s confes-sion if you waited until the last minute. We will re-sume the normal schedule for confession on April 20th. Please note that confessions will not be heard during Easter Week. Remember that the Church requires all Catholics to receive Holy Communion at least once from Ash Wednesday to Trinity Sunday (June 11th). This should, of course, be preceded by sacramental confession. For some, even the thought of confession is a difficult one, especially if there have been bad experiences in the past. However, please remember that each of us is a sinner and each of us relies on God’s mercy. Don’t deprive yourself of the grace that the Lord has in store for you!

STEUBENVILLE EAST AND YOUTH FEST

Steubenville East will take place from July 14-16, 2017 at UMass Lowell and Youth Fest on May 6, 2017 at Saint Anselm College. These are two incredible events for the young people of our parish and diocese to gather together to enliven their faith and their com-mitment to Jesus Christ. Both events will feature opportunities for group ses-sions, Mass, time for adoration, great speakers, pow-erful music, confession, fellowship, and Christian en-tertainment. Are you interested in one or both of these events? Contact Father Joe at [email protected] for more information. If you would like to register for Youth Fest, please complete the registration form found in the back of the church or in the office and return it with your registration fee by April 12th.

TENEBRAE The ancient service of Tenebrae will

take place in our parish church on Monday, April 10th, at 7:30 p.m. This service is traditionally held in the last days of Ho-ly Week and is a blending of Matins and Lauds (now called the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer). Our Tenebrae marks the prophecies and the Passion of Jesus accompanied by hymns or choral anthems with candles extinguished after each piece of music. At the conclusion of the rite, the altar, a symbol of Christ’s own body, is washed by three women, and the final candle (the Paschal Candle) is removed from the sanctuary. In the darkness, the strepitus or “noise” is made by the congregation to remember the earth-quake that took place at the Lord’s death and the clos-ing of the tomb. Now in our fourth year, this is a beautiful way to en-ter into the mysteries of Holy Week.
