Presidents Message - Cindy StewartOur last full month of summer is behind usand I find it a little sad .The good news is thatthose of us with gardens are starting to enjoythe bounty. I noticed the other day thatsome of our members have too much anddrop off the excess for others to enjoy. Howkind and generous of you. Saying that

however, Autumn is such a beautiful month with all thedifferent colours of leaves and bushes. Each season has its ownpleasures I guess. The Pancake Breakfast ,as usual, was a success and we surecouldn’t do it without the many volunteers who worked overthe 3 days. I believe we covered 120 shifts if I remembercorrectly. THANK YOUThe sign-up sheet for the Fall Supper is getting full too althoughwe can always use a few more whether it is baking a pie, donating a bag of carrots or helping out Sept.15Our AGM is fast approaching and I hope that you have had achance to look over the change to the Constitution and the newBylaws as we will be voting on them in Oct. If you haven’t,please pick up a copy at the office or online at our website. As many of our activities resume shortly I hope to see you out and about or at the Membershiplunch, Fashion Show or Fall Supper.

KITCHEN NEWS - Sharon Peichl

A new year of activities is ahead for all the members at our fine Centre! As well, welook forward to some volunteer options to enhance many of those activities! We haveoperated a vibrant kitchen program here for well over 20 years! Those years sawmuch more kitchen work as we used to cater events for community events too.Recent years have seen us working just for OURSELVES! Even that is enough work todo! Now only 2 programs run out of our kitchen all year: Friday lunches for ourpleasure, and perogy making as a main fundraiser. Two more fundraiser's: the

Pancake Breakfast, and Fall Supper are annual events that contribute to the community and raise funds for us too.The Social Committee occasionally calls on our kitchen team to add some 'taste' to their events as well!We do depend on our KITCHEN to add to our members' pleasure all year!

I have enjoyed all the kitchen programs as a member and a volunteer for all of my 25 years. Now I am cashing insome chips! Happily turning over my share of the kitchen to Isabel Peterson who will put it all in good order. Many thanks to her for volunteering as she does so well. Unhappily I am leaving her a shortage of necessaryleaders for the Friday lunch program. We ideally need 8 teams to cover the weeks of lunches for the wholeseason. We are short of leaders and more team members. Without a full slate of teams, we may not be able tooffer the excellent meals every week. I can't imagine Fridays without my lunch fix!!!Be assured that member volunteer support will guarantee this program continues. If you are interested in helpingmaintain this 'member friendly' service, please attend theKITCHEN VOLUNTEER MEETING, September 11, at 10 am. If the date doesn'tsuit your schedule, let the office staff know, and they will welcome you becausethey like lunches too!!

Fall Supper Veggie Preparation!Come on down as usual to prepare excellent veggies for our annual Fall Supper. 9 am, Sunday,September 15. Bring your favorite peeler, even if it's your husband! Free Coffee. The fall supperstarts at 3 and runs until 6 pm Sunday Sept 15th.

All about the cooking . . .

Arts Activities

Acrylic Painting Classes- Lorraine MacVicar

Our Paint group will be starting back on TuesdayOct.15th from 1-4. Hope everyone had a great summer

and are ready to paint!! We have our ChristmasMakers Market coming up in November. We will

welcome any new members who wish to join. Ourgroup is very informal. If you have never paintedbefore, I will give you the basics and help you get

started. If you have a favorite picture you want to paintbring it. We share ideas and have lots of laughs and forsure we have the best coffee breaks ever! I also have

some painting supplies that were donated to ourgroup. Hope to see you then!!!

How has another month passed by so quickly? We have all been busy with our projects.Linda D was kind enough to demonstrate making a quilt sandwich on the tableusing pool noodles. This is especially helpful for those of us who have troublegetting down on the floor and then back up again. We are still looking forward to Brett’s wallet workshop in September and thelandscaping workshop in October.

Regretfully, we will no longer accept donations of fabric scraps for puppypillows. We will still be making the pillows from fabric scraps from the group. However, someof the donations that we have been receiving are not appropriate. This means we have to sortthrough them and determine what we can use and what needs to be disposed of. Thanks toeveryone who has contributed. Don’t worry; the foster dogs will still be getting cuddly pillowsthat they can take to their forever homes. Now that summer is coming to an end, if you are ready to move inside, feel welcome to join thegroup to work on your fibre arts including, but not limited to: quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting and more. Socialize, make new friends and maybe even learn something new. Comeout on Tuesdays. We meet from about 10 – 2. We have show and share at 11:30 followed bylunch (bring your own bagged lunch). We are very informal and people set their own hours.

Any day spent doing fibre arts is a good day.

Circle Dance comes from the folk dance tradition. So we dance traditional dances from around theworld (Greece, Israel, France, North and SouthAmerica, etc.) along with newly choreographed

dances to a variety of world music. Beginners arealways welcome. No Experience necessary. Thedances are always simple, and each one will be

taught before we put on that piece of music and wewelcome "variations", just keep moving in the samedirection. After a couple of sessions, you will beginto recognize steps and music. No partner needed

because everyone in the circle is your partner.Dancing in a circle is one of the oldest ways in whichpeople celebrate community and togetherness. Cost

is $1 to New Horizons members and $5 to non-member.

Circle Dance has been in Gimli since 2002, firstintroduced by Astrid Hudson.

Gimli Lawn Bowling News - On The Green

The Gimli and District Lawn Bowling club hosted another memorialtournament on August 24, 2019 in honour of Barb Magnusson who passed away last fall. Barbwas a long-time member of the lawn bowling club and held the position of treasurer. Her helpwith tournaments, such as the one held in her honour, and our annual wind-up were alwaysappreciated. She bowled in our Tuesday league and, unless she was away cheering on the Blue

Bombers, she also bowled casually on Thursday evenings.Barb enjoyed socializing over a cup of coffee and a donut atRobin’s Donuts after bowling. She was an asset to our cluband is greatly missed by the club members. Winning thetournament were (from left to right in the photo): GlenKnowles, Mike Devlin, Rod Bjorklund, and Norm Carrothers.Presenting the plaque is Barb’s husband, Chris Magnusson.

FRIDAY FLOOR CURLINGHELLO from Mavis and Vera! September is here and our new floor curling season is aboutto start. After such a hot, sunny summer, whether we are ready or not, it’s time to thinkabout indoor activities. Curling starts Friday, September 13th, teams have been made upand by now all skips have been called and advised of their team members, phone numbersand starting time on the 13th. A copy of the teams and September-December Schedule will be available atthe Membership Lunch on September 6th, as well as at the office and on curling mornings.

If you are a curler and haven’t yet received a call from your skip, please phone Mavis at 204-642-8651 orVera at 204-642-9391 and we can help you out. Vera is responsible for the Spare List again this year, so ifyou have to miss a curling game, please let Vera and your skip know, so a spare can be lined up for you.

We have several new curlers joining us this season and also some curlers playing in new positions. Pleasebe welcoming and go easy on them. While competition is good, the object is to have fun!

We look forward to seeing all of you on September 13th and please remember to bring your $15.00(cheque or cash) curling fee with you.

IT’S GOING TO BE A FUN YEAR! - Mavis & Vera
