Chania, the “Venice of the East”.

Chania, or XANIA as it is spelled in Greek, is a beautiful coastal town located on

Crete, the largest of all the Greek islands. Crete lies south of the Aegean Sea, provid-

ing a vital link between Asia Africa and Europe. The landscape encompasses rugged

snow capped mountains and lush green coastal plains. There are many historical

sites to visit including Knossos, home of the fabled Minotaur. The island offers an

abundance of beautiful beaches and rocky coves, charming villages and quaint har-

bours as well as excellent food.

Chania is a unique town bearing a rich and long history and culture. Its name is often

glorified in historical documents as the town raised brave soldiers, ground-breaking

politicians, intellectuals and artists. It is considered the town of Justice and Freedom

and its rare beauty justifies its characterization as the “Venice of the East.” The town

of Chania was a crossroads between the East and the West for many centuries, and

for this reason it was claimed by its enemies and suffered the presence of many

conquerors. Chania was built, according to archaeological research, on the ruins of

the ancient town of Kydonia, dating back to the Minoan period.

The old town of Chania has managed to preserve its cultural heritage and traditional

Chania’s old town is considered Crete’s most beautiful urban district, especially the

crumbling Venetian harbour with its 15th century lighthouse Faros and the Mosque

of the Janissaries Giali Tzamissi, built in the 17th century. Many of the old buildings

have been restored as hotels, restaurants, shops and bars, making the old town a

lively and colourful place during the tourist period especially May-September. The

Splantzia quarter behind the inner harbour and the Venetian Arsenals are still large-

ly untouched and very atmospheric. This atmosphere prevails throughout the old

town during the less busy period of the year November-March.

The climate is relatively mild. During the autumn and winter months north and

north-west winds dominate, while in the summer the southerly winds bring the

warmth of the Sahara Desert. Chania Prefecture has the largest amount of fresh

water in Crete (65%) and is rich in plants and fruit trees as well as semi-tropical

plants.

Lastly, don’t forget that the Greeks are notorious for having a good time. You’ve

probably seen the plate smashing ritual, but have you seen the fire dance? If you

study in Chania, you’re almost guaranteed to have the time of your life!

The course is full-time over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday - 10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday - 10 am to

1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the afternoon. Teaching practice

starts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a de-

tailed course timetable and your teaching practice schedule.

The course starts at 9:30 am sharp. Please try to arrive at 9:15 am because you will

Your passport

Make sure that your passport will have at least 6 months life left on it when you

travel to Crete (Greece). If it doesn't, you will have problems.

IMPORTANT: Non-European passport holders read this for detailed information

about overstaying the tourist visa period in Greece.

Entry visas

European Union, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand pass-

port holders IGNORE THIS SECTION. You DO NOT need a tourist

visa to enter Greece.

If you DO NOT have a passport from a European Union country, the USA, Canada,

Australia or New Zealand then please make sure that you do the following:

Check with your country’s Greek embassy or consulate to find out what your specific

entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period. Before you

send a deposit you must check with your nearest Greek embassy or consulate as to

exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to enter Greece.

To attend the course you must have a tourist visa that will allow you to stay in

Mandatory

Your passport with your visa stamp with at least 6 months left to run on it (with

a visa if you need one – refer to the visa section for more information).

A round-trip or onward travel ticket if you aren't already in Crete (Greece). If

you arrive only with a one-way ticket and passport control asks to see your re-

turn ticket, they will force you to buy a return ticket on the spot. This will be

very expensive. The chances of this happening are unlikely but not impossible

so play it safe.

Your signed course payment receipts.

If you have a degree, a copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) or a copy

of your degree certificate.

Recommended items for the TEFL course

Laptop computer - Check that it is wireless B/G compatible. We give you the

codes to connect to our free WIFI but you are responsible for configuring your

laptop and making sure it works properly and connects.

Mobile/Cell phone - If you have a tri-band phone - BRING IT. You will find that it

is cheaper to buy a pay-as-you-go card for your phone than it is to buy a new

phone. Being contactable by phone is VERY important. Good local phone com-

panies: Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind

We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you take out personal accident and health insur-

ance.

If you plan to stay and look for TEFL jobs you may need your birth certificate

(original or a notarised copy) and original or copies of your University or College

qualifications (degree certificate or transcripts)

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

There are no specific dress rules when you attend class, but we ask that you respect

your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country.

There are specific dress requirements for teaching practice sessions that conform

with the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart

casual as per the following guidelines.

Women

Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very

short skirts. Bare midriffs must not be visible, even when lifting arms up. Open-toed

shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.

Men

Long pants/trousers. NO jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirts with a collar (a tie is not

required). Loafers or dress shoes are acceptable (no sandals, hiking boots or sneak-

ers/trainers). Long hair should be tied back.

Other wardrobe planning should be based on the seasonal temperatures mentioned

in the Local Weather Conditions section shown later in this document.

ARRIVING: AIRPORT/PORT TO DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION

You can fly or go by ferry from Athens to Chania You will arrive in Chania either in

the Chania International airport or in the port of Souda. Chania airport is about 17

km west of Chania. The port of Souda is about 10 km west of Chania.

TAXIS FROM THE PORT OR AIRPORT

There are plenty of taxis immediately outside the arrival area in the official taxi

ranks. The cost of a trip downtown will be between 15 to 20 Euros (about 25 to 40

US Dollars). ONLY use official taxis. DO NOT go with people who walk up to you and

offer you a taxi, they are not licensed and are not insured to take passengers.

BUS FROM THE AIRPORT

There are only 3 buses a day from the airport to Chania, 7:15, 10:30 and 19:30. The

cost is about 1 Euro (1.5 USD).

BUS FROM THE PORT

Buses run every hour from the Souda to Chania. The cost is about 2.50 Euros (4

USD).

AIRPORT/PORT PICK-UP

Once you have applied for the course, been accepted and paid your deposit, the

course centre can arrange to pick you up at the port or airport in Chania. If you want

to arrange a pick up you will be asked to send your travel plans once you have them

finalised. Please send your arrival details as soon as you have them and also at least

one week prior to your scheduled arrival time.

Local transportation

Chania is a great place to see on foot, but there is also local transportation.

Bus

Chania has a well organized bus service (KTEL) and the central bus station is located

in Chania. The routes connecting Chania to other cities of Crete, such as Heraklion

and Rethymno, are frequent. There are also local services serving most areas of the

city.

Taxis

You can find a taxi quite easily in the capital and in most of the other popular resort

areas of Chania. There are lots of taxi ranks and radio/phone taxi services. Charges

are predetermined for most of the popular destinations so you should ask before

getting in the taxi or calling to ask for one.

Car

Car rental services are available at reasonable prices. However, do not forget to

bring your driving license.

Town day trips

Chania town is a great base to stay in, due to its many bus connections. There are

buses to some of the island’s famous beaches. These are well worth visiting, alt-

hough they become relatively crowded in summer. You can also take a bus to Kissa-

mos and from there a ferry to Balos Lagoon - a beautiful paradise of white sand and

shallow jade waters.

If you like hiking there are some fantastic walks in the area. There are also a number

of gorges to climb, although the famous Samaria gorge will be more crowded and

touristy than the others.

Shopping

Chania has an impressive variety of goods to offer shoppers, from top designer la-

bels and exquisite jewellery to fine antiques and high quality leather goods. Shops

are open Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 9 am to 3 pm and on Tuesday and

Thursday fro 9 am to 8 pm. Tourist shops are open 9 am to 10 pm. 7 days the week.

Greece is famous for it’s original jewellery design and competitive prices. Greeks

have always been good at making jewellery, as proved by both ancient and modern

history. Jewellery shops can be found in all tourist areas of Chania. Other thing to

buy from Chania are wine, embroidery, handicrafts woven goods, folk art, and vari-

ous cheese (e.g. xynotyro, kefalotyri, anthotyro and graviera).

COMMON-SENSE WARNING: Shopping areas are always full of tourists and there-

fore pick-pockets so watch your purse or wallet.

Beaches and swimming

The closest beaches are Agioi Apostoloi, Agia Marina and Platanias. These beaches

start just outside central Chania on the road from Chania to Kissamos. The distance

from central Chania to the start of the beach is only 5 km. and you can easily get

there by bus or taxi. There are water sports available or you can simply relax and

enjoy the Greek sun.

Night life

For those who want to spend an evening a bit off the beaten path, there are many

places to go which provide an evening full of entertainment. Most people start the

evening with a late dinner at a tavern, a cafe, or a small restaurant that provides

home-cooked types of cuisine.

There are different types of bars in Chania and they all feature different types of music,

some of which is played live. Not only can Greek music be heard in some of the bars,

but other popular types of music such as Latin, European and American music is also

played.

The nightlife in Chania goes on and on, and often does not end until about five in the

morning. Because of this, most people (both locals and tourists) do not start their enter-

tainment until fairly late in the evening , usually at around ten or eleven at night.

Questions about living in Chania

What are the average housing and living expenses when working in Greece?

Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or with

Greeks, and of course it depends on where you choose to live. A room in a shared house

or apartment in a good neighbourhood costs about 200 to 300 Euros a month.

It is fair to say that TEFL teachers are quite well-paid by local standards in Greece, which

means they can afford a comfortable standard of living. A TEFL teacher can expect to

earn between 1,000 and 1,500 Euros per month working 20 to 30 hours per week.

While this may not sound a lot by international standards, it means you can live quite

comfortably in Chania.

How much money should I bring?

You should budget to spend between 500 Dollars (Spartan life) to 1,000 Dollars (good

life) for the period covering the 28 day course. If you want to stay and work in Chania or

the rest of Greece you should budget between 1,000 to 2,000 Dollars to cover finding

apartments in Chania and living expenses until you get your first pay-check.
