Department of Food & Agriculture.

Teens Helping Teens Secure a Healthy Future

is a program is designed to enlist the unique

outlook and abundant energy of youth aged 12-

18 years of age and mentor them as they devote

a portion of their time working with fellow teens

to determine how fruits and vegetables can

best serve the nutritional requirements of teens.

Under the mentorship of business and health

professionals, teens will create a marketing

program with social media messages about the

great flavors and unsurpassed nutritional value

of California- grown fruits, nuts and vegetables

ABOUT KGS

Kids Growing StrongTM is a nonprofit organization that provides resources and support to empower families, caregivers and community leaders to help youth connect with their environment and lead informed and healthy lives.

Established in 2001 with initial funding from a grant

from the Shell Oil Company and donations from a

group of dedicated gardeners, Kids Growing StrongTM

(KGS) is an educational enrichment program that

today reaches tens of thousands of children and their

families each year.

We use science-based, hands-on garden activities

to inspire children to adopt healthy lifestyles through

proper nutrition and exercise while motivating

children to actively learn about themselves and the

environment.

KGS programs have served the needs of elementary and

preschool-aged children for over 15 years. In 2017, the

new and innovative “Kids Growing Strong 2.o” (KGS 2.0)

was initiated to include service to teens and young adults.

This program is funded by the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program

(SCBGP) administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and

managed in California by the California Department of Food &

Agriculture.

Specialty crops—fruits, vegetables, nuts and nursery crops—are an

agricultural and dietary staple. They are a central part of a healthy

diet and are vital to the economic success of American agriculture

and to the farmers and businesses that rely on them for their

livelihoods.

The purpose of the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP)

is to solely enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops by

helping increase capacity, opportunity, and economic success

for California’s specialty crop growers by promoting increased

consumption of delicious, nutritious California-grown specialty

crops by teens, their families and their friends, today and

throughout their lives.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

DATE:2017-18

FUNDER:USDA

SPONSOR:CDFA

The adoption of California specialty crop consumption in urban communities, especially among teens, will be crucial to the economic future of specialty crops. Timely reinforcement from peers can influence attitudes toward nutritious specialty crops. The USDA approved funding to enable Kids Growing Strong to develop a the peer-to-peer participatory educational program leveraging Kids Growing Strong’s successful volunteer leadership training experience. The program, designed specifically to influence youth aged 12 to 18, invites teens to learn about specialty crops and healthy

nutrition, visit farms for first-hand research, help craft authentic peer-to-peer messaging and program curricula, and take the message to the public through local outreach at public events, schools, and other venues. In this program, teens obtain valuable personal insight and develop business skills. In return, teens contribute valuable personal insight, time, and effort. The program fosters leadership, broadens business skill sets, and empowers them to be advocates for specialty crop consumption, nutritious diets and the ecologically responsible California agricultural model.

SECTION ONE

KIDS GROWING STRONG6

WHY THIS PROJECT?

Recent figures in the California Health Interview Survey conducted

by the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Health Policy

Research state that. in general, 83% of California teens consume

fewer than five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

According to public studies, elementary school students are

experiencing a moderate increase in consumption of specialty

crops. This increase is presumably due to the diligent efforts

of schools and parents. However, the increase appears to halt,

even reverse, when children become adolescents and are more

influenced by their peers and personal inclinations. The teen years

are the last, best chance to influence this cohort and establish the

foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating and years of increased

specialty crop consumption.

This project attempts to improve the knowledge and

understanding of California specialty crops and their beneficial

importance to health and well-being through a participatory,

interactive, peer-to-peer education program developed by teens,

for teens, that will insprire youth aged 12 to 18 (15% of California’s

population) to develop healthy eating habits, increase consumption

of specialty crops, and promote and food preparation and serving

techniques that will help sustain good health throughout their lives.

WHY THISPROJECTThe teen years are the last, best chance to influence oung adults cohort and help them establish the foundation for a lifetime of healthy

eating.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Improve the knowledge and understanding of California fruits, nuts and vegetable as well as specialty crop agriculture and its importance to health and well-being.

PROMOTE CALIFORNIA GROWN AGRICULTURE & CROPS

Adolescents learn, think, and respond differently than adults or children. To make an

impact, messages and motivations must be fashioned to resonate with this specific

cohort. By working with members of this age group, Kids Growing Strongmentors will help

teens identify stories that foster teen/farmer connections, identify specific teen health/

appearance concerns (weight, skin, energy, etc.) that increased specialty crop consumption

can positively affect, and impart healthy preparation and serving techniques to make

specialty crops fun to eat.

Increase consumption of California grown fruits, nuts and vegetables among youth aged 12 to 18 (15 percent of California’s population.

PROMOTE BETTER HEALTH BY EATING FRUITS & VEGETABLES

Develop a participatory, interactive, peer-to-peer education program to inspire teens to regularly enjoy the wholesome flavor of nutritious California-grown fruits and vegetables.

CREATE A MARKETING PLAN & TRAINING PROGRAM

Advocate specialty crop consumption, nutritious diets, and the ecologically responsible California agricultural model that produces healthy fruits and vegetables to the public.
