What to Consider When Choosing a Performing & Visual Arts School

tudents who wish to study visual or performing arts face some unique

challenges during their college search. The type of college, application process, and school philosophy are just a few of the important things to consider.

A DIFFERENCE OF DEGREE

Prospective arts majors have two degree options: the fi rst, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a major in the arts; the second, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) for art-ists/performers or Bachelor of Music (BM) for musicians. The BA degree is the typical liberal arts degree, with a survey of courses in different areas and a specialty cho-sen in one area; students who major in English, history, and other humanities majors also earn BA degrees. The BFA or BM degree is more intensely focused in the arts.

There is a world of difference between a BA in Music and a BM in Music. A BA in Music consists of a lot of courses outside of the music major and approximately 12 or so courses within it. It may not be enough for the student who wants a passionate musical experience. A BM in Music, however, is essentially a professional degree with rigorous study through coursework in music history and theory.

Which degree you choose depends on your college and career goals. If you have a high degree of commit-ment to your art and desire an arts-focused college experience, a BFA or BM might be right for you. If you would rather study a variety of subjects along with your arts major, a BA may be the way to go.

TYPES OF COLLEGES

Visual and performing arts students have several types of colleges to consider. Conservatories and stand-

by Jennifer Gross

alone arts schools offer an immersion-type experience for students earning BM or BFA degrees. All students will be artists, and the atmosphere is often highly competitive.

Some larger universities offer BFA/BM degrees as well as BA degrees in the arts. You may fi nd somewhat self-contained music or arts schools within the larger university. In this atmosphere, students can pursue the more special-ized degree while keeping the door open to taking a few liberal arts courses (which may be unavailable at special-ized music or arts schools). In addition, a university-based arts program might give you the option of pursuing a double degree, such as a BM in Music and a BA in History.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

In addition to completing a typical college application, students in the visual or performing arts will need to pre-pare a portfolio or audition. Each school will have different requirements, listed in their collateral and on their website.

Keep in mind that although a portfolio or audition is an important part of the application, arts programs do consid-er academic records and test scores. Most colleges balance students’ creative talent with their academic achievements.

ASSESSING YOUR ABILITIES

If you're interested in pursuing an arts major and career, now is the time to seek objective opinions of your abilities in the fi eld.

In addition to asking for honest advice from high school and private teachers, students can also get outside assessment from professionals at a local symphony, dance troupe, or theater company. Visual arts students can receive portfolio evaluations from college representa-tives at one of the many National Portfolio Days. See www.portfolioday.net/ for details.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

All students benefi t from visiting the colleges that interest them and asking questions about academics, student life, and other facets of the college experience. As an arts student, you have additional questions to consider.

LOCATION

The location of your chosen college may be more important to you than to students with other majors. For example, arts students attending school in urban areas will have access to professional venues such as museums, galleries, theaters, and concerts. Additionally, the opportunity to perform, exhibit, and have active internships is vital to a young artist's education.

FACILITIES

In addition to checking out dorm rooms, class-rooms, and athletic facilities, art students should look at a college's studio space or practice rooms, performance or exhibit venues on campus, computer resources, and any other resources specifi c to your fi eld of study. And ask questions about how accessible these resources are to students: attractive studios are of no help if there aren't enough to go around.

A GOOD FIT

Finally, as for every student, visual and performing arts students need to fi nd a college that fi ts their per-sonality, interests, and goals. It's easy to be dazzled by the prestige of a top professional school or arts depart-ment and overlook the question of whether the program is right for you. No matter how talented the student and how wonderful the school, fi t is always crucial.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees.

* In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree pro-gram as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 6-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educa-tional standards. Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

What did you have to do to apply?

I had to submit a portfolio showing a breadth of artwork, including projects created for the AP Studio Art Exam, portraits, still life drawings, observational studies and sketches. I thought it was important to show process as well as product. After my portfolio was submitted, I brought other examples of my work to be reviewed by a professor. I was asked to explain my thought process, techniques, challenges, and goals established when creating my works.

What advice do you offer students who want to attend a

Performing & Visual Arts School?

Any student considering a PVA school should think about what they want to get out of their education. I didn't want to be in the middle of nowhere; I wanted to be in a city with galleries, museums, and a strong artistic community. Next, students should see what else colleges have to offer, like liberal arts classes. Research your professors—make sure they are experienced, working artists. That way, they can giveyou the best insight on how to succeed. I had a wonderfulset of professors; the ones who challenged me the most taught me how to be a better artist. Also, fi nd out what the facilities are like. Good studios make all the difference in pro-duction. Finally, do what makes you happy. If you are notpassionate about what you are doing, it will refl ect in your work.

ARTIST PROFILE

In Her Own WordsWhy did you decide to go to a Performing & Visual

Arts School? How did you research and ultimately

select the school?

I had a checklist of things that I wanted to get out of my education. I fi rst looked at schools that offered Art Education as a major. Next, I weighed the pros and cons of going to an exclusively visual arts school, but I wanted the option of taking liberal arts classes. Boston University offered me a very well-rounded education, with a strong foundation in drawing from which I could expand my technique in other disciplines.

What arts major did you specifi cally study or

are studying?

I obtained a BFA in Painting with a minor in Printmaking, and am currently enrolled in the Master’s Program in Art Education. Art is different from other areas of education—you can learn and improve, but natural talent is important to succeed. I chose painting based on my skills. But I also tried glassblowing in Venice, bookmaking, photography, sculpture and ceramics, and even graphic design. Experimenting opened my eyes to new things and developed passions that I never knew I had.

pplying to a school for performing or visual arts (PVA) can be especially nerve-wracking because having some-one judge your art – your talent – can be highly subjective. But you’ve already

made the brave and diffi cult decision to pursue your artistic dream, so the best thing you can do is give your-self every possible advantage when applying to schools.

The centerpiece of your application is where you showcase your talent: your portfolio or your audition. To make the best impression, read the guidelines for each school carefully. For example, some schools might prefer digital .jpeg fi les while others might ask for 35 mm slide transparencies. Double check, then check again!

Here are some of TeenLife’s tips for young artists as you’re preparing to take the next step in your creative career:

VISUAL ARTS AND GRAPHIC DESIGN

If you’re photographing your work, check out Bowdoin’s online guide to using natural and artifi cial light (http://www.bowdoin.edu/visual-arts/portfolio/photographing-art.shtml). For digital fi les, 72 dpi and a max height of 1000 pixels are standard specifi cations, but make sure that’s what your schools want, too. You can submit your fi les by mail on a USB fl ash drive or CD, but some schools also let you post them to online services like highschoolportfolios.com, deviantart.com, or carbonmade.com. If you’re submitting slides, you can fi nd Kodachrome and Ektachrome fi lm in art stores or online. Consider a mail-order slide processing service like Coopers Imaging if you can’t fi nd a developer locally.

Tips to Showcase Your Talent

by Hilary Dobel

DANCE

For in-person auditions, you’ll need to provide a CD or sheet music for accompaniment to your solo dance. Make sure to bring the CD in a labeled jewel case so it doesn’t get lost or scratched! If you’re submitting an audition DVD, many schools want shots of you from the side (especially for barre exercises) as well as from the front. Depending on how different the requirements of each school are, you might fi nd it easier to fi lm a series of short sections separately, then edit them together to tailor your audition video to each school. Many schools also ask that you wear a particular dance outfi t, so make sure you’re dressed for success.

THEATER AND VOICE

Your appearance here is important. Choose clothing that’s fl attering and neat, and keep any makeup simple. Headshots and a resume are universally required, so have a small stockpile printed–and you don’t have to spend a ton of money

LEEDS COLLEGE OF MUSIC’s Chamber Orchestra and Chorus rehearsing for performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with guest conductor Maestro Murry Sidlin. See listing on page 29, ad on page 19.

on headshots to have a great photo. If you’re auditioning in person, don’t get upset or fl ustered if the panel wants you to make an adjustment to a monologue or song. It can actually mean that they’re impressed with you and want to see how you take direction! You may also be asked to improvise–to cold-read a scene for acting or to sight-read if you’re singing.

MUSIC

Musicians auditioning long-distance may need to submit more than just a CD of their music. Increasingly, schools want DVD auditions, including close-ups of em-bouchure or fi ngering. In person, remember that you have a limited amount of time–don’t be alarmed if the panel cuts you off before a song is fi nished and asks to hear an-other one. They just want to see as much from you as they can. Remember to bring multiple copies of your sheet music, since the panel will want to be able to see what you’re playing to help them evaluate your performance. And, like singers, come ready to sight-read.

Member FDIC. Citizens Bank is a brand name of RBS Citizens, N.A. and Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania.

FILM

Stick to the running time given in the school’s guide-lines! If you have a script or storyboard, the admissions committee may be interested in seeing those, too, so check the website for details. It’s diffi cult for high school students to make even a movie with limited resources, and fi lm schools know that. Because of this, many of them accept work from other genres. If you have a short story you’re proud of or an essay that rocks, use that to give yourself an edge. Film schools want to know that you can tell a story, and you can show them your capabilities even if you don’t have a prizewinning short.

No matter your genre, your audition or portfolio is about breadth as well as depth. You’ll need to demonstrate profi ciency with a range of styles or expressive modes, such as a classical aria and a jazz standard, or ballet and modern dance. Choose pieces you love, no matter what, and your passion and talent will come through–and that’s sure to catch the eye of the selection committee.

At the core of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) undergraduate

education is an awareness that the boundaries between artistic fields are fluid, and

the most interesting developments in art and design occur in spaces where previously

only borders existed. Our interdisciplinary curriculum supports and encourages

exploration across all media.

It takes more than just determination to be a performer.

It takes more than just practice.

You need someone who cares, a community that understands.

You need mentorship and guidance, someone to say,

“Try that again, but this time...”

At The Boston Conservatory, we have faculty to guide you,

programs to support you, and a community of

students and teachers who understand not only

what it means to be a performer, but also what it takes.

This is The Boston Conservatory community.
