This month will be a year since the passing of Nelson Mandela, one of the 20th century’s most significant figures. His courage in the face of almost impossible adversity and his willingness to forgive and work with his former enemies serve as an inspiration to current and future world leaders and citizens around the world. Directed by Justin Chadwick and based loosely on Madiba’s autobiography of the same name, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom focuses on key elements of the political leader’s life. We include this film in months line up as a tribute and as remembrance to one of the worlds greatest icon’s.

The late James Gandolfini will forever be remembered as the psychopath gangster willing to go for therapy in HBO’s The Sopranos. He passed away in June 2013 at the all too young age of fifty-one having won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his role in the legendary game-changing series. Having inhabited the character of Tony Soprano over the course of so many seasons, it’s often easy to forget that Gandolfini appeared in a number of memorable big-screen outings including The Mexican and Get Shorty. He stars alongside a broody Tom Hardy in the screen adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel Animal Rescue. Hardy plays a Brooklyn bartender in Michael R. Roskam’s film The Drop. His cousin Marv (Gandolfini) once owned the joint; it’s subsequently become a “drop” venue for illicit gambling money and run by Chechen gangsters. Gandolfini is suitably brusque – if not a memorable swansong then at the very least a last hurrah.

With Christmas just around the corner, a slow burning desire for Yuletide fare may suddenly arise. The obvious concern is that so many of these films are barely bearable baloney with storylines that go south as opposed to the North Pole. Will Ferrell in the title role of Jon Favreau’s 2003 film Elf may not immediately provide a sense of comfort, but when you scan the cast list everything begins to look far brighter. The titular

“Elf” is a human child that lands up in Santa’s sack during his Christmas rounds. Raised in the North Pole, he reaches adulthood and realizes that he is just a little bit taller than his fellow elves. A yearning to return to his “roots” and meet his biological parents sees him off to New York City where his father is a tough publisher who one wouldn’t expect to embrace his green tunic-wearing son. “Elf” does however enter Walter’s (Caan) life at a very apposite time – the old man’s company needs a successful children’s book. There are a number of very funny encounters, most significantly when Elf meets a Santa at the mall. More than enough laughs with a few to spare for December 25th.

Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker were a pair of outlaws who robbed banks, gas stations and liquor stores across the central United States during the years of the Great Depression. There were various other members of their gang and as a collective they were responsible for the murders of both policemen and civilians. The pair were shot and killed in Louisiana in May 1934 by a group of Texas Rangers. Even before their deaths, Bonnie and Clyde were approaching iconic status, but the hail of bullets that ended their short lives, gained them immortality. More than twenty thousand people attended Parker’s funeral and floral tributes were sent from across the country. In 1967, director Arthur Penn’s big screen version was released and starred Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. The film gained unpresidented acclaim and Oscar nominations (10) flowed. Decades later, the film is seen as a landmark in American filmmaking. It’s a must see movie on numerous levels.

GET ON UPBiography, Drama – 138 min

James Brown was one of the most important popular music figures of the 20th century. Variously known as The Godfather of Soul and The Hardest-Working Man in Show Business, Brown was influential as both a purveyor of musical styles (soul, funk) and as a stage performer. In the latter role, it is unquestionable that his abilities in front of a live audience were a key inspiration for Michael Jackson along with a host of other entertainers. Brown’s presence and music also formed part of the fabric of the 1960s civil rights movement – Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud doesn’t bear explanation. The magnitude of Brown’s ego is similarly legendary.

The most obvious challenge in delivering a successful biopic is that any individual worth the viewer’s time will inevitably be larger than life. Muhammad Ali and Nelson Mandela are two very obvious examples but one has to wonder just why a big-screen film about Frank Sinatra has never been made. Individuals who achieve this level of popularity have qualities that actors are simply incapable of capturing and portraying on screen.

Having said that, Chadwick Boseman does an admirable job especially in the dance/live sequences. Brown was a perfectionist – he often fired band members for missed cues and his “hardest-working” moniker was thoroughly earned. He would do four shows a day at the legendary Apollo theatre in Harlem. Boseman has clearly studied and rehearsed for many months in order to capture the essence of Brown’s mythical on-stage appeal. He is also able to render a degree of the Godfather’s over-blown ego that was never hidden. In 1968, Brown’s show in Boston is to be broadcast “free” on television in the wake of the shooting of Dr. King. He makes it clear to the city’s mayor that he will have to be paid his full fee as “free” television exposure will hurt ticket sales.

Considering the life and exploits of James Brown, director Tate Taylor (The Help) has almost too much to work. The film flits between Brown’s abandonment as a child, his womanizing, his performing for troops in Vietnam and through numerous other episodes. It’s very difficult at times to follow the separate threads, the key strand that cuts across everything is Brown’s sense of his own self-worth and his dogged determination to succeed at all costs. If you have even a passing interest in popular music and its key protagonists, the film provides an attractive insight into the persona necessary for accomplishment.

“I was born in Nigeria during the Nigerian civil war, it is a subject that has always fascinated me and I have always wanted there to be a book or film about Biafra”

Half of A Yellow Sun is an epic love-story weaving together the lives of four people swept up in the turbulence of war. We spoke to the Director Biya Bandele about the films message, history and cast.

Bandele, how would you describe the film?It’s essentially a love story. It’s about people falling in love and the sacrifices you have to make sometimes when you are in a relationship. It is about a generation of Nigerians who grew up in the 1960s, which is when Nigeria along with most African countries gained independence. And this was a generation of Africans, of Nigerians, who were so imbued with confidence, with enthusiasm, with optimism about the future of the country and of Africa. Before the end of that decade things began to unravel around them, and the dream they had for that country became very complicated.

How much of the novel is based on actual events?For the author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the story was an intensely personal one. The story of Odenigbo in the novel is based on the writer father’s own experiences. Her father had just returned from the US with his new PHD in Mathematics, and was eager, like most of the other educated Nigerians of his generation, to join in the task of nation building after independence, and then things fell apart: the coup, the massacres, the war. The scars of the conflict are still present in families across modern-day Nigeria, none more so than Adichie’s. Almost everything that happens in the novel is based on something that happened to

someone real, a family member, a family friend, although she changed some details.

What was it about the book that resonated with your own life story?I was born in Nigeria during the Nigerian civil war, it is a subject that has always fascinated me and I have always wanted there to be a book or film about Biafra.

What made you decide to make a movie about the war?Immediately after the war we had this flurry of literature about it, and then nothing. And it just became the elephant in the room, it became something that dominated absolutely everything but nobody talked about it. I felt that Nigeria as a nation needed a form of healing, and that healing could only start once we started talking about that elephant in the room, the war.

What challenges did you experience in distilling a 500-page book into a 2-hour film?It’s like translating something from one language to another. In order to make it work you have to find new idioms, new ways of saying the same thing in a new language. I was trying to capture the essence of the book.

What influenced your choice in the cast?We wanted to try and embody the spirit of the characters and their relationships as portrayed in the book. The actors had to have complementary personalities and energy.
