General Manager’s Report

Well another month closer to the Christmas period!

Lots of things happening around the club and have appreciated the positivity being shown by many

members. During the month we welcomed a new craft beer to Club Turramurra – tigerJak, which had an

amazing take-up in the first couple of weeks. Initially I thought a new keg of craft beer might take up to a

month to sell, was pleasantly surprised to see it emptied after just one week. It just shows what can be

achieved off the back of some focussed marketing. leaflet drops, digital signage, Facebook posts and better

use of bulk emails.

A large number of emails sent to members have not been opened – yes, our new software tells us that . I

suspect many of these have been captured by spam filters and are sitting in spam/junk mail folders so check

your mailbox and adjust your settings to allow these emails through next time.

The pool table arrived a week ago and has created interest. The priceless moment for me was last Friday

night when I watched a family with two young kids arrive, the son walked in casually and turned, looked at

the pool table, face lit up and said “wow”. The second part was equally special seeing the two young

children, mum, dad and grandpa all playing pool together - as I said priceless!

Talking about price, the pool table cost the club nothing and we share 50% in the coins that go into it. This is

a trial and will hopefully add further interest to Club Turramurra. Let’s see how it goes.

We had 55 barefoot bowlers in last Saturday night and for those that were there, how good was the

atmosphere? It made for a great segue to the Rugby World Cup semi-final and the A-League local derby.

Electricity Costs

One of the club’s largest expenses is its electricity bill – over $30,000 per year! During the month we had

representatives from NSW Chamber of Commerce promoting more effective use of energy. A significant

impact on energy costs can be gained by simply employing better practices. We are also examining the costs

and benefits of LED lighting.

For a club like ours lighting, air conditioning and refrigeration take up a large portion of our energy bill.

Common sense (which is not always common ) involves not leaving lights on unnecessarily and not

operating air conditioners at the same time as leaving windows open – yes, I have witnessed that firsthand. If

you see a light on that doesn’t need to be on or an air conditioner that can be turned off give someone a

friendly nudge or do it yourself and help us reduce our electricity costs.

Financials

Though there were some positive signs in September we still recorded a loss of $1, 642 for the month (a loss

of 8,478 the previous month). The year to date position is a total loss of $30,327. This in a nutshell is why

we need to change – doing the same thing will deliver the same outcome and that outcome is not good.

Change

With so much happening around the club there will always be a level of discomfort and rejection of change.

I sincerely hope you have some level of appreciation of the need to attract new people into our club and to

help fund our current and future activities. The ultimate aim of course is to provide a sustainable future for

the club. The environment around us is changing at an incredibly rapid pace and it’s important we are not

left behind.

Last month I quoted Winston Churchill, this time around I’m not sure who the author of the quote is but here

goes, simple but profound…..

Mid Week Triples Congratulations to our C Grade side that qualified for the Final against Seaforth

Unfortunately they were unable to get a victory and had to settle for the runners up medal

Roseville Shield Turramurra finished one point behind the winners [3rd spot on a countback] in the recent Roseville Shield. Congratulations to Bob Hawtree, Bob Southam, Herb Brenner & Geoff Hamilton.

Latest news from the Men’s Club

Ron Christie Trophy Turramurra was defeated by St Ives in the 59th edition of the Ron Christie

trophy 123 to 99. Turramurra won one rink [Doc Wilcox] and Geoff Hamilton’s rink had a draw.

St Ives won the other four rinks.

Congratulations to Bob Hawtree on his selection to represent Zone 9 in the 2019 Zone Veterans

2020 MENS PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP The nomination sheet for the 2020 Pairs Championship will be

posted on the noticeboard on 27th November. The 1st round is on the 12/1/2020. Get your partner

organised for the event.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR LADIES CLUB. On Tuesday 8th October Turramurra hosted St Ives in the annual Rose Bowl challenge. Unfortunately, we

were unable to retain the Rose Bowl this year and will look forward to the challenge next year. Yvonne did a

wonderful job of arranging the roses in the bowl.

The Major/Minor Pairs is underway, good bowling to all who have entered the competition.

On Friday 18th September two teams competed in the annual Lindfield Shield, a competition that has been

played for 60 consecutive years. For the first time since 2011 we were successful in being the only club to

have four wins on the day to bring home the trophy. Well done to the ladies who represented Turramurra;

Susie Butler, Jan Baker, Marilyn Brenner, Bridget Nelson, Judy Jenkins, Anne Webb, Jenny Wallis and Sue

Hamiilton.

Good bowling to all. Sue Hamilton President MAHJONG and CARD DAY Mahjong along with the monthly Card Day continues to attract good numbers. Jeanette Staniland keeps the days running smoothly. Well done Jeanette on another successful activity in the club.

LABOUR DAY BOWLS Although the numbers were few seven friends/family members enjoyed a couple of hours of bowling. Everyone enjoyed themselves and look forward to coming again. Thank you to Eva and Geoff Morris, Anne Webb and Marilyn and Herbie Brenner who brought bowlers along on the day. MIXED BOWLS Nine teams entered the Mixed Pairs, the first round of the Mixed Pairs has been played. Thank you to the teams who have entered. Delaying the start of the competition saw the numbers grow from three teams to a justifiable nine teams. SUNDAY LIVE MUSIC It was great to have John Ryll back at the club on Sunday 20th September. MAHJONG AND CARD DAY

Our NEXT Card day and Mahjong will be on Monday the 18TH November 2019. It will be our Christmas

Party. from 10 am, lunch, 12 noon. $30.

Mahjong continues every Monday starting at 12.45pm still $5.

3 mistakes to avoid when packing up your home

Downsizing your home is not an easy task. Working out what to do with all your stuff can be a tough and emotional time. And it often has to be done in a short time frame. If it is too much to handle by yourself, give me a call. But in the meantime, here are some of my tips. 1. Don’t underestimate how long it will take Don’t be surprised if you need to spend months and months sorting through your things. Depending on the circumstance, you may be able to knock over one room per session but more often than not it will take a few scheduled sessions per room. My tips are to start with a non-emotional room like the laundry or bathroom, because they are the easiest. Allow more time for bedrooms, then even more time for the lounge room, study and garage. 2. Don’t think good quality furniture holds its value There is no getting around it, we live in a consumer society. Sadly, second hand stuff just doesn’t cut it anymore. Yes, your big dining table and matching chairs are handmade from cedar and cost six months pay when you were 25. And yes, the internet is an amazing tool for matching a buyer with a seller. You can certainly use Gumtree or Ebay to find people interested in old furniture, but don’t be disappointed when the $3000 dining suite only attracts one bid. Even the charities tend to only take furniture in excellent condition. A five step triage system works best – chuck, donate, sell, gift or keep. 3. Don’t get sentimental OK, this is tough one. It is natural to feel sad, guilty or even angry about having to give your items away for free either online or to charities. In this day and age, we are all encouraged to re-cycle. Just remember how wonderful it is that your treasured items are being re-used and loved. Don’t avoid making decisions because it is too hard, otherwise the job will never get done. Things are only possessions, the most important things are the photos, videos and the memories in your heart and mind. And don’t forget, your parents had to go through a similar process a generation ago. They just didn’t have the internet to help them!

No one believes seniors . . . Everyone thinks they are senile.

An elderly couple was celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old neighbourhood after they retired. Holding hands, they walked back to their old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they'd shared, where Jerry had carved I love you, Sally. On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armoured car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up and, not sure what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money - fifty thousand dollars! Jerry said, We've got to give it back. Sally said, Finders keepers. She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic. The next day, two police officers were canvassing the neighbourhood looking for the money, and knocked on their door. Pardon me, did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armoured car yesterday? Sally said, No. Jerry said, She’s lying. She hid it up in the attic. Sally said, Don't believe him, he’s getting senile The agents turned to Jerry and began to question him. One said: Tell us the story from the beginning. Jerry said, Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday ... The first police officer turned to his partner and said, We’re outta here!
