Perimeter Security
In a technology partnership with EXPO Milano 2015, CAME developed
an innovative access control system that succeeded in managing the
enormous pedestrian and vehicular flows through the parking areas
and the exhibition halls themselves generated by the more than 21
million visitors to the international fair.
EXPO Milano 2015 had been looking for a system that could reconcile
the need for the high security that the event demanded with the need
to maintain speed and fluidity in the management of the entrance and
exit of a huge crowd numbering 250,000 people a day. The system
also had to be amenable to the centralized management and oversight
of all operations across the more than 1.100.000 square meters of the
exhibition site by the authorities in charge of security, which was done
through an operations center.
CAME designed and developed an entire system that was custom
built to satisfy all the demands of the client. It included features
such as smart turnstiles to direct the flow of visitors and automatic
barriers protecting the checkpoints for the control of vehicular traffic.
The turnstiles, which were nominated for the prestigious Compasso
d’Oro Award (for innovation), were specifically designed to enhance
communication with visitors and reduce waiting times to a minimum.
Particular attention was dedicated to the building of twenty special
turnstiles for disabled access. The access control system comprised
automated sliding gates, road barriers and bollards with removable
covers to allow them to be customized to changing needs.
The perimeter entrances to the exhibition site consisted of: 230 XVia
turnstiles capable of scanning paper tickets and QR codes and of
reading the signals from RFID and NFC devices; 22 AXO automatic
sliding gates; 23 automatic GARD8 EZ road booms; and 40 G6 EVO
bollards. The integrated access control system could be operated from
70 handheld devices.
The contract here was to install a system of flow control for
the cruise-ship passengers who make use of the Barrakka
Lift every day to reach the centre of La Valletta. The lift,
inaugurated in December 2012, offers a practical alternative for
the thousands of tourists who disembark daily at the port of
La Valletta and want to reach the shops, restaurants, churches
and museums in the town centre.
The Municipality had been looking for ways to connect the
upper part of La Valletta with the port below where the cruise
liners dock, and to direct the flow of tourists from all over the
world to the old town and the Barrakka Gardens.
The solution was a major construction project, coordinated
by Mekanika, a Maltese systems-integrator. It entailed the
installation of two enormous lifts connected to an access
control system to manage the flow of tourists headed for the
upper part of the town. Mekanika engaged CAME to develop
the access control system and connect it to automatic ticket
dispensers, which obviated the need for any staff. The city port
and the Barrakka Gardens were linked by means of two Kone
elevators, each capable of carrying up to 21 people in around
25 seconds up to the installation tower, 65 meters above.
CAME’s access control system comprises: 11 “Twister”
turnstiles with barcode readers to scan the tickets; 2 “PS One”
automatic ticket dispensers; 3 “Wing” turnstiles for disabled
access. System manages over 2.000 people an hour during
daily rush-hours.

High-security access control for the protection of vehicle access
gates at the extremely sensitive site of the Panama Canal
(Miraflores Lock).
To ensure maximum site protection it was necessary to find
a solution that would fully secure the access gates located at
critical points around the lock. Given the particular national and
international significance of the security challenge, the contracting
party needed a 100% guarantee that whatever system was
adopted would meet stringent international regulatory standards.
The solution entailed the installation of new ASTM-F2656-
certified ONE50 high-security bollards, (certification is equivalent
to the DOS and PAS68), for the secure and automatic protection
of the access areas. The safety of ONE50 bollard has been
proofed through crash test. In one, a vehicle weighing 6.8 tons
was driven into a bollard at a speed of 80 kms an hour. While the
bollard stopped the vehicle dead and the impact destroyed it, the
bollard itself required no more repair than a new cover.
The bollards are also equipped with a colour LED system
for visibility at night.

El Prat International Airport Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona’s “El Prat” International Airport is the main airport of
Barcelona and the second busiest in Spain after Madrid-Barajas.
In 2014 it handled more than 35 million passengers. The automatic
parking systems, installed between 2002 and 2008 for Terminals 1
and 2, now oversee more than 13,000 spaces.
In 2002, Barcelona Airport decided to install a new automatic
parking system for Terminal 2 to cope with the various different
categories of users: tourists, airline and airport staff, vendors,
security personnel, car rental operators, etc. The primary
requirement asked of the system was that it ensured maximum
fluidity and speed for every type of user arriving at and leaving
the parking area. In 2008, in view of the success of the system,
Barcelona Airport decided to expand it to Terminal 1 and combine
it with the parking system in use there.
The proposed system is made up of:
recognition system that can match parking tickets
to vehicle plates;
and payments through NFC.
A particular feature of the system is its exclusive guidance system
that keeps watch over more than 13,000 parking bays, facilitates
ease of access to them and offers users a fast and secure parking
experience. A central server searches for and indicates unoccupied
spaces, which enhances the free flow of vehicle traffic while
providing greater control of the parking areas.

The project resulted in the complete renovation of the parking
meters in the historic centre of Madrid and the creation of a single
platform for their centralized management. The 1,500 parking
meters, all powered by solar energy, offer a variety of payment
choices.
The City Council of Madrid, needing to renew the parking meters
of the historic centre, all made by the same manufacturer and
posing technological problems, resolved to use three different
manufacturers for the new terminals (parking meters) but to
link them all to a single control system that could also handle
payments via mobile devices.
As part of a strategic plan for the improvement of air quality in the
historical centre, the Council also wanted to introduce a system
that penalized parking during peak periods and rewarded eco-
friendly vehicles.
The approximately 1,500 parking meters are mobile-payment
enabled and equipped with NFC technology for the validation of
bank cards or rechargeable proximity cards by which users can
check their credit balance in real time.
A specially-designed centralized platform handles all the
connected terminals, even if made by different manufacturers,
which enables the dynamic pricing of parking according to the
environmental impact of the vehicle. Particular attention was paid
to the reduction of energy consumption through the use of solar
energy and to keeping the need to maintain the batteries to the
bare minimum.

On-Street Parking Systems
The project, which is now being expanded, has so far involved the
installation of 22 automated systems to serve the same number of
parking lots located at various points in Kuwait City. A dedicated
platform, currently under development, will provide centralized
monitoring and control of all 22 sites.
The construction and outfitting of new parking areas, and the
adoption of advanced solutions for their management and operation,
is one of several projects to modernize and improve the urban
mobility of Kuwait City Centre. One of the project requirements was
the engagement of a single contractor with whom the city authorities
could continue to work exclusively on the further developments now
in the pipeline or already planned.
The chosen solution entailed the manufacture, supply and installation
of 22 separate automated parking systems located in different
areas, for a grand total of 36 entry units, 39 manual and automatic
pay stations, and 75 barriers. All outdoor installations are covered
in reflective paints and fitted with cooling systems so that they may
work in extreme temperature conditions. A dedicated software
platform specially developed for the project enables a high level of
customization of the functioning of each of the different systems. The
platform provides centralized management and monitoring, through
which the individual systems can be remotely controlled, and to
which they provide real-time status reports.

Home & Building Automation
The solution refers to a complex of 587 apartments, 43 individual
homes and over 2,000 square meters of commercial space, for
which innovative systems of building automation were developed
and installed to the highest standards of comfort and safety.
The customer needed a full-spectrum solution that could be
guaranteed by a single provider and that offered access control,
security systems, video entry phones, home automation and
lighting in the common areas. The system also had to ensure
maximum comfort for the end-user, while also rationalizing building
support and maintenance tasks to reduce running costs.
The solution consists of a combination of integrated,
interconnected and dedicated systems for each of the three types
of real estate: apartments, separate homes and commercial
spaces. The installation includes innovative video entry system
solutions based on ETI/XIP interfaces. Each apartment is
equipped with a home automation system, which can also
be remotely operated (from a smartphone, tablet or PC) to
switch lights off and on, and activate dimmers, thermostats
and automatic blinds. All homes are also fitted with anti-burglar
systems and gas and smoke detectors. The entire system can be
controlled via a dedicated app and further developed to purpose.
The BPT video door entry system at The Lancaster is made
up of 23 bespoke DIGITHA entry panels connected to a secure
communal the LAN network by means of 6 ETI/XIP network
interfaces. The network server ETI/SER oversees and manages
the correct routing of all audio/video communications between
the entry panels and around 150 of Crestron’s TPMC-4SM touch
panels.
The need to reduce the quantity of cabling in a complex and
extensive built environment steered the developer’s London-
based integration partner, SMC towards digital systems
communicating via LAN on IP protocol.
In this environment BPT was selected for video door entry
systems thanks to its innovative XIP technology capable of
distributing video door signals over LAN. SMC worked closely
with BPT UK, long established and traditional partner of BPT
in the UK to design a system, which communicated directly
with Crestron’s TPMC-4SM touch panel within each apartment.
The contribution of BPT UK was decisive in supporting the
specifying, winning and delivery of the project. At a technical level,
Crestron and BPT R&D departments teamed up to deliver full
interoperability between the BPT XIP video door entry system and
Crestron’s TPMC-4SM touch panels. This software development
was undertaken jointly and delivered to meet the project’s
timescales.

An integrated solution for the management of security and access
control to the various levels of a complex of 84,000 square meters
housing a luxury hotel and conference centre.
The project involved the construction of a dedicated control system
for the multi-storey car park attached to the complex, the installation
of turnstiles to control the differentiated access of staff and guests
coming through the main entrance, as well as a system for the
regulation of people flows around the different areas of the building.
Newton Plaza needed an installation to control and regulate the
various entrances and exits distributed throughout the building (in
the parking lot, the hotel, conference centre), and that could combine
maximum safety with a streamlined and rapid operation.
An essential requirement was that the whole project should be
managed by a single operator who would develop a solution,
manage the operations of the system, deliver assistance and
maintenance and minimize the time lost to repair work, while all the
time maintaining strict client confidentiality and discretion.
The solution used involved:
video recording devices for status checks of incoming vehicles and
the detection of any damage occurring during manoeuvres;
vehicles and speed up access;
with mobile devices and reading QR codes;
areas of the complex by different types of users.
