Adam Aft is a partner in the Firm’s Chicago office. He represents clients on a variety of technology, outsourcing and other commercial transactions. Kate Alexander is a partner in the Firm’s London office and a member of the Global Technology, Media & Telecoms Industry Group’s leadership. She handles all aspects of cross-border tax structuring for UK-headed and non-UK headed groups. She is particularly knowledgeable in UK DPT provisions, CFC regime, loan relationship anti-avoidance provisions and the new interest limitation rules. She regularly assists multinational companies with the design of their global holding and financing structures. Kate is a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser with nearly 20 years’ experience in tax-related matters.

Kate’s practice focuses on UK and international taxation, particularly the taxation of financing and intangible property. Kate frequently acts for companies that are under enquiry from HMRC. She also has extensive experience in settling open enquiries in relation to highly complex matters that span multiple years, including through Alternative Dispute Resolution and the High Risk Corporates Program. Kate has also appeared as an expert witness in an arbitration matter heard by the World Bank International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.

Kate is highly skilled in handling matters on the taxation of intangible property, including the UK Patent Box, international structuring and hub structures. She has led numerous projects to help businesses restructure their intangible property holding structures and associated supply chains.

Danielle Benecke is a senior associate in the Firm’s Palo Alto office and is a member of the Firm’s Digital Media and Copyright Steering Committee. She also has particular expertise advising on the development and use of artificial intelligence technologies, and has acted as an advisor to the World Economic Forum’s Generation AI project.

Danielle advises on US and global IP and technology issues, and her practice includes acting in disputes, product counseling, advising on intermediary liability issues, handling complex transactions, and managing global IP portfolios.

In addition to her practice, Danielle serves as an Innovation Ambassador for the Firm’s Global R&D leadership team. A previous fellow of Stanford’s Legal Design Lab, she is skilled in applying human-centered design thinking methods to improve and innovate legal services.

Robin Chesler is a partner in the Firm’s Palo Alto office and Chair of the West Coast tax practice. Robin has more than 25 years of experience advising multinational corporations with respect to international tax planning and implementing restructurings. She is co-author of BNA Tax Management Portfolio No. 555, Federal Taxation of Software and E-Commerce and member of the State Bar of California, the American Bar Association, Section on Taxation, and the Harvard Club of Silicon Valley.

Christie Constantine is Global Director of Sustainability for the firm and is based in the Amsterdam office. She is responsible for the development and implementation of the Firm’s global CSR strategy and acts as the principal liaison with the Firm’s chair, Executive Committee, Global COO and key Firm leaders in relation to all sustainability matters.

Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Christie was the creative director for Virgin Unite, Sir Richard Branson’s charitable foundation in London. She was responsible for the foundation’s overall creative output and helping to develop its brand positioning in the UK, US and South Africa.

Earlier in her career, Christie worked with a Washington, DC, PR firm focused on health, education, and women’s rights. She has also worked for Pro Bono Net, an organization funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that increases legal services for the indigent through the innovative use of technology. She has also worked as a refugee advocate with the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights in New York and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Roberto served as in-house counsel to Telecom Argentina and law clerk with the National Civil Courts in Buenos Aires. Roberto is an associate professor of contract law at the Buenos Aires University and a visiting professor in several local universities.

Michael Hart is a partner in the Firm’s London office. He has extensive experience in a wide range of contentious and non-contentious IP matters, particularly in the areas of copyright, designs, trademarks and trade secrets. He has led a wide variety of high profile litigation cases, winning important cases in the High Court, the UK Supreme Court, the UK Copyright Tribunal and the Court of Justice of the European Union. He also has considerable experience of lobbying on IP issues.

Michael’s IP litigation cases for many household-name companies have involved issues relating to copyright, design, IP licensing terms, trade secrets and misappropriation of confidential information, personal privacy and trademarks. Michael has also successfully conducted a large number of mediations relating to IP issues. Anne Petterd is a partner in the Baker McKenzie, Wong and Leow Singapore office. Anne focuses on technology, telecommunications, customs and export controls, and consumer and commercial law issues. Joyce Smith is a partner in the San Francisco office and chair of the San Francisco/Palo Alto International Commercial Practice Group. Joyce leads the Firm’s Global IP Transactions and Tax Practice, chairs the Firm’s North American International Commercial Practice Steering Committee and serves as the California Offices representative on the North America Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Joyce’s practice focuses on advising multinational companies on cross-border commercial transactions, IP and technology licensing, development and acquisitions, IP migrations for post-acquisition integrations and international tax reorganizations, implementation of international tax restructurings, FCPA compliance and due diligence, and other cross-border regulatory, compliance and commercial issues. Alison Stafford Powell is a partner in the Firm’s Palo Alto office. She focuses on cross-border trade compliance in the areas of export controls, trade and financial sanctions, anti-terrorism controls, anti-corruption and anti-money laundering rules, US anti-boycott laws, and US foreign investment restrictions under the Exon-Florio Provision. With a background also in EU and UK trade restrictions, Alison helps non-US companies reconcile US and EU trade regulations and advises on the extra-territorial impact of US trade restrictions.

Alison advises on all aspects of outbound trade compliance, including compliance planning, risk assessments, licensing, regulatory interpretations, voluntary disclosures, enforcement actions, internal investigations and audits, mergers and acquisitions and other cross-border activities. She develops compliance training, codes of conduct, compliance procedures and policies. She has particular experience in the financial services, technology/IT services, telecommunications, travel/hospitality, and manufacturing sectors.

Kensaku Takase Partner | Tokyo [email protected]

Kensaku Takase is a partner in the Firm’s Tokyo office and is the group leader of the office’s IPTech Practice Group. Kensaku has focused on information technology and intellectual property law for 20 years. He is a member of the Firm’s Global Privacy & Information Management Working Group and is an author for the Japan chapter of the Firm’s Global Privacy Handbook.

Kensaku focuses on IT law and has been heavily involved in significant IT deals, including those involving outsourcing, licensing, and cloud based solutions. He regularly advises on data protection and data security issues for global companies in many industries including technology, media, consumer goods, medical device and pharmaceutical companies. Kensaku has particular experience with assisting clients with the GDPR compliance programs, including intra-group transfer agreements, and privacy related compliance advice.
