Technology vs Traditional Tools for Teaching

For education in today’s society, there are several ways to teach children. Technology is constantly changing and being adapted to education programs in preschools and primary schools. Children are learning with technology at a faster rate and learn how to operate devices at a much younger age. In the past, children have learned through physical teaching. By using pencils, paper and white boards, teachers have been able to teach students, however these materials are beginning to be replaced with modern technology. In the past, students have used physical materials to be able to learn such subjects as math or English. Now, students use tablets or netbooks to learn each subject. Children are using these devices at a younger age and traditional tools are slowly being replaced by such devices. This action has parents and teachers wondering which option are a better method for teaching; Technology or Traditional tools. Below we will break down both categories with pros and cons of each method.

Traditional Teaching Tools

Since the beginning of educational institutions, traditional tools have been used to teach children the basics of education. From chalk and blackboards to toys and interactive play, children have used physical items to learn math, English, history and other subjects. Children were able to get their hands dirty and understand how plants grow by

actually planting a flower. By using the traditional methods, children are given a ‘hands on’ approach and must use the skills they have learned to further their education. Math is a perfect example of traditional tools. In math, one uses a pencil and paper to work out problems. Having to ‘show your work’ allows the student to work through the problem and learn the steps for solving. With a technical approach, children are learning the basic methods by computer without seeing the work completed in person on a chalk board or white board.

Technical Teaching Tools

Over the past few years, schools have begun to integrate new technology into the curriculum. Children are able to use netbooks, iPads and other electronic devices. Teachers have access to lesson plans that are accessed through the device so children simply log on to view the assignments, events and projects. Some schools have even done away with textbooks and provide all course information on the device. This has taken away somewhat from traditional learning but also gives children a wealth of opportunity. With the new technology, children have the world at their fingertips. Anything they wish to learn, they have access to. This can open up a whole new world for children who may not ordinarily have access to a computer or the internet. So in this sense, children do have an advantage. One must also consider that the world is changing and technology is basically taking over. Children must learn how to operate these devices and use the internet to be able to learn as they advance in school as well as in college and on the job.

Which is Better?

The question that will continue to be asked for years is – which option is better? There is no real answer for this. There is an argument for both sides. Essentially it is imperative that children learn how to use devices such as netbooks and tablets as they are being introduced in

at an earlier age every year. Parents can continue to introduce schoolstraditional tools at home for additional learning, but in most cases, technology rules and will be used during the education of your child. Accept that education is changing and learn to adapt to the new curriculum in today’s educational institutions so your child can blossom and grow.
