What is Good R&D?Important ProblemReal world issueIngenious SolutionTrade Secret or PatentBiz ImpactCan make moneyMajor Trends in ICT

The Nexus of Forces of will drive more than $104B in 2017 - Gartner28

Trend 1. Network is increasingly being dominated by dataTrend 1. Network is increasingly being dominated by dataBandwidth vs. response time vs. availabilitySNS, multimedia, search, VR, ARMore variable, dynamic, integratedReal-time OSS/BSSTrend 2. Big opportunities for big data

Quiz: How much data generated between 1993 2012?Hint: 5 exabytes* generated between 3000 BC 2003 * 1 Exabyte = 10^18 bytes = 1 M Terabytes

Quiz: How much data generated between 1993 2012?Hint: 5 exabytes* generated between 3000 BC 2003

Answer: 80 roundtrip times between Earth and Pluto (160 x 5.9B km)Trend 2. Big opportunities for big data but Didnt crack it yetMNOs vs. OTTsPrivacy: Customer sentimentplus regulationsOther obstaclesEnd-to-end encryption

Trend 3. IoT can provide new opportunitiesIoT is a $19 trillion opportunity John Chambers

Trend 3. IoT can provide new opportunities but Innovation is happening elsewhereNest, drones, watch, self-driving carsSelling circuits vs. solution? What about security and privacy?Direction 1. Virtualization to the rescueNo constraints from physical assetsNFV, SDN, Network-enabled cloudCapacity breathingAuto-scaling, self-scalingPredictiveDynamicAt any granularity, at any time scalePoint-to-point, multicastBased on usage

Direction 2. Mining the DataMore than just big dataSynergy between MNO & OTT?Mining, sieving, refining, distillingWhat is the purpose? What are you looking for? Intelligence, InsightNew tools Graph DB, column store, big table, stream processingPrivacy-preserving, delegated computingBusinesses are dying of thirst in an ocean of data1 in 2business leaders dont have access to data they need83%of CIOs cited BI and analytics as part of their visionary plan2.2Xmore likely that top performers use business analytics80%of the worlds data today is unstructured90% of the worlds data was created in the last two years20%amount of data traditional systems leverage today

#Main point: Data is growing at an astounding rate. It is growing so fast that we often lack the ability to use it to its full potential. The highly unstructured nature of this data makes the challenge that much more difficult. This is a real problem for business. It makes informed decisions more difficult to make. Business leaders need a way to find hidden patterns and isolate the valuable nuggets that they need to make business decisions.

Further speaking points: Yet, the rewards for finding a way to harness the data into useful information are great; 54% of companies in this years study with MIT/Sloan are using analytics for competitive advantage and that number has surged 57% in just the past 12 months. Dying of thirst in an ocean of data Its an apt analogy. Data is everywhere. 90% of it didn't exist just two years ago. The vast majority of it is totally useless for any given goal and therefore amounts to noise and a hindrance to finding the key useful information needed in a specific time and place.
