Objectives of the Seminar

Projected GDP growth in India stands at 8% giving boost to further industrial development and improvement of the well-being of the nation. With a robust growth in industrialization and urbanization, the need for environmentally friendly technologies

BACKGROUND

Some of the key facts of the environmental technology sector in India include:

• The environmental technology market in India is estimated at over USD 9 billion – with annual growth of about 15%

• Indian Government has initiated many new projects for improving environment and reducing pollution (USD 12.4 billion are reserved for improvement of waste management, development of urban areas, water, sanitation, etc. in 63 cities)

• Indian government is increasing compliance and enforcing legislation which will support long term growth of the environmental technology market

• Major polluting industries like chemicals, process industries, automobile, iron and steel, cement etc. are frontrunners in introduction of environmental technologies

• Indian carbon trading market, the world’s biggest, is another means of doing business in the environmental field

Gujarat is the first state in the country to set up a separate Climate Change Department – with dedicated budget for specific interventions

Gujarat Pollution Control Board office in Gujarat is the first of its kind building that runs entirely on solar energy

Gujarat is the most industrialized state in the country. With sustained investor confidence, stable governance and favorable business conditions, the average GSDP growth over the last five years has been over 10%. The State is committed to harness and promote increased use of clean technologies through renewable energy resources. To ensure promotion of environmental technologies in the state, the following organizations have been set up:

• Gujarat Cleaner Production Center• Gujarat Pollution Control Board• Climate Change Department• Gujarat Ecology Commission• Gujarat Energy Development Authority• Forest and Environment Department• Center for environment education

Some of the key initiatives of the Government in this sector are as follows:• Gujarat is the first state in the country to start a

commercial bus service using bio-diesel• The state has a revolving fund for promotion and

research on green technology• Policy for conservation of water, land and air• The state makes efforts to get maximum carbon

credit• The state aims to increase CNG network, increase

mangrove cover, reduce dependence on groundwater by creating recharge structures in cities and villages

• 39 clean management projects in sectors such as energy and petrochemicals, urban transportation, forest and environment, rural development and industries and mines to be under the Climate Change Department
