TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM OF THE OAA OAAAS NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 1 APRIL 2016 PAGE 1 Report from the Executive Director Occasionally, members ask me about OAAAS finances and how their dues are used. Since the accounting firm BDO has just completed its annual review of our 2015 finances, this is a good opportunity to review these issues. The first thing to know is that the OAAAS Budget and the Financial Statements are both approved by the Ontario Association of Architects’ Council. In 2015, OAAAS members paid a total of $46,400 in dues and exam fees; new members paid $9,900 in application fees; and we received $3,100 in other revenues, including sponsorships for our student awards program. On the expense side, OAAAS paid $91,700 to its contract staff; $8,300 for office and administrative expenses; $3,300 on the student awards program, $2,200 for marketing; and $7,300 on meeting costs, including the Board of Directors. For those good at math, you’ll notice that the expenses paid by OAAAS in 2015 exceeded by $53,400 the revenues we received directly from our members. Since our members who are Licensed Technologists OAA pay dues and fees directly to the OAA, the OAA makes an annual contribution to OAAAS. It’s important to note that the total revenues received by OAA now exceed this contribution. The OAA also directly covers some costs for the OAAAS operation, including providing an office, equipment and meeting space. Report from the Executive Director

Occasionally, members ask me about OAAAS finances and how their dues are used.

On the expense side, OAAAS paid $91,700 to its contract staff; $8,300 for office and administrative expenses; $3,300 on the student

awards program, $2,200 for marketing; and $7,300 on meeting costs, including the Board of Directors.

Garry Neil, Executive Director | Registrar

Call for Expressions of Interest to Serve on OAAAS Committees and Board of Directors

The OAAAS is governed by a Board of Directors which is selected annually in consultation with the OAA. The OAAAS Board appoints three working committees which discuss relevant issues and make recommendations to it. The Board meets in person 3-4 times each year and the Committees meet usually by teleconference 3-4 times each year.

The OAAAS Nominating Committee is seeking expressions of interest from OAAAS members who may be interested in serving on any of the following bodies:

• OAAAS Board of Directors.• Admissions|Examination Committee. This Committee considers issues of membership

qualification, including assessing educational equivalence for those trained outside Ontario, and overseeing the Advanced Standing Program. The Committee is also presently overseeing the renewal of the Licensed Technologist OAA examination.

• Marketing|Awards Committee. This Committee is responsible for the OAAAS student awards program and considering effective ways to promote OAAAS to technologist, architects and the industry.

• Finance Committee. Oversees the finances of the association, reviews regular reports and assists in developing the budget.

If you are interested, please send a note indicating which position interests you and send along your current résumé to [email protected]. It must be received no later than Thursday, April 28, 2016.

OAAAS needs members to help renew its examination

Do you remember taking the exam?  Are you one of those who thought, "what stupid questions, I could write better ones myself ?"  If so, now's your chance.

In order to ensure the exam remains current, secure and relevant, OAAAS has embarked on a process to develop new questions.  To do this, we require the assistance of Licensed Technologists OAA and architects.  Working with an educational consultant, a team is brought together for a two-day session during which they prepare and test new questions that can form part of future examinations.  New exam writers attend a preparatory session the previous day.

We expect the next session will be in June.  An honorarium is paid for each day of attendance.  Are you interested?  If so, please contact me at [email protected] by May 25, 2016.

“During my early studies in China, I fell in love with design and decided that I wanted to be able to design buildings on my own.” After finishing school, Feng worked as a Grade 2 Architect and an interior designer. Among his projects, he designed an award winning complex in his old high school. “The school has historic buildings which combine western and traditional Chinese cultures. I borrowed different elements from these historic buildings and my design fully integrated the new buildings into the existing campus.” His two buildings have since become models for other buildings that came later.

Feng arrived in Canada 15 years ago. “When I arrived in Toronto, I explored different ways to keep my dream alive. Lacking a Canadian architecture degree, I looked at different possibilities, including other associations and the RAIC syllabus program. What I found was that the OAAAS process made the most sense for me.”

“Even though I was an architect in China, I needed to learn the building systems here, and I’ve been able to do that quickly with support from my boss, colleagues and intensive study.” Feng joined OAAAS in 2010, filed some retroactive work experience hours and become an OAAAS Technologist in 2013. He attended the Admission Course in 2014 and passed the exam the following year. Last month he received word that his application to become a Licensed Technologist OAA was approved. “I am very proud of my achievement.”

Feng has advice to offer to others. “If you are working as a technologist in architecture, it’s important to keep your knowledge current and I’m always looking for continuing education opportunities.” He also wishes he had studied both the Canadian Handbook of Practice and Mastering the Business of Architect well before he did, “each of these provides valuable guidelines that I use every day in my work.” Feng says, “I really urge other technologists working in architecture to look seriously at what they can achieve through OAAAS.” “I enjoy being with Romanov and Romanov, because I’m able to work on a wide variety of different interesting projects. Becoming a Licensed Technologist OAA demonstrates I’ve met the highest standards and it also gives me the option in future to establish my own practice.” Feng Liu’s dreams continue to come true!

Seal Design Entries

Showcasing the Lic.Tech. OAA Seal Design Competition Entries

In November 2015, OAAAS launched a Lic.Tech.OAA seal design competition which presented members with the unique opportunity to propose a new design for the current Lic.Tech.OAA seal. We wish to thank all the members who submitted their designs. 12 entries were received, some of which included more than one design. This totaled to 22 designs which were adjudicated in early April.

We would also like to thank the adjudication team who shared their design expertise in making the pre-selection. The adjudication team was formed by Jeremiah Gammond, Lic.Tech.OAA, Rachel Jeremiah, Lic.Tech.OAA, Brian Luey, Architect and guest jury member, internationally renowned Industrial Designer, Scot Laughton. Please note that it is exclusively the responsibility of the OAA to approve the seal.

The following are the seal design entries submitted:

Submitting Your Work Experience Hours As soon as you join OAAAS, you should begin submitting your work experience hours. This involves keeping track and recording your newly accumulated work experience hours on the official Experience Record Book (ERB) and mailing it periodically to the OAAAS office for validation and calculation, approximately every 1000 hours. This rule does not apply to retroactive submissions which are experience hours gained prior to joining OAAAS, which must be submitted within three months of joining OAAAS.

Once your hours have been calculated you will receive a Summary Report that highlights the specific hours that are still required to move to the next certification level. For complete instructions and necessary documents visit the OAAAS Program Guide. See below and side bar for examples of the key documents that will assist you in reporting your work experience hours. See Program Guide for further details.

In total, a member is required to obtain a minimum of 7200 hours of experience in specified categories while working with or for an architect. Check the Program Guide for a description of the acceptable architectural employment situations.

New Associate OAAAS members can submit an unlimited amount of retroactive work experience within the first three months of joining OAAAS. This opportunity allows new members to complete their Associate OAAAS work experience hours faster and reach the Technologist OAAAS level of certification. At present, there is no limit on the number of experience hours you can claim retroactively, providing the submission is within the three month deadline. See the following documents found in the OAAAS Program Guide for further instructions.
