Brief Summary of Unit:
This is an introductory unit on the weather and the seasons. Students will
understand what weather is and identify different types of weather. Students willidentify the four seasons and understand that weather changes with each season.
Students will identify different instruments used to measure weather and understand
how to measure weather.

How can weather be different from day to day?
What are the different types of weather?
What is a season?
What are the four seasons?
How does weather change from season to season?
How can we measure weather?
How can you find out how warm the air outside is?
What tool measures the direction of the wind?
What tool can you use to measure how much rain has fallen?
Weather is what the air outside is like

Goal: The goal is to report daily weather conditions to a local newspaper.
Role: The students will pretend that they are meteorologists. They are to observe the
weather daily and record it in their weather journals. They will report to the local paperthe weather conditions, temperature, and drawings of what they observed.
Audience: The target audiences are local newspaper readers.
Situation: You have been asked to work for a local newspaper. They need a meteorologist
to report to their readers what the weather will be like for that day. You must observe the
weather daily and report to the newspaper what you observed.
Product Performance and Purpose: You need to observe the weather daily and keep a
report of what you observed in a weather journal. Your information will be reported to thenewspaper to help daily readers prepare for the weather that day.
Standards and Criteria for Success: Your weather journal needs to include:The date the weather was observed.
The daily temperature of the weather outside.
The use of appropriate words such as windy, rainy, cloudy, sunny, hot, cold, warm, andcool.
A drawing of what the weather was like daily.
(8) Assessment Plan:
Assessment Format/Evidence
Lesson NumberLesson 1 Students will be assessed on the completion of their daily journal entries. The
journal entries should have the days date, the temperature, a drawing, and a
recording of what the weather was like they observed that day. A rubric will be
used to assess the students journal entries.
Lesson 2 Students will be assessed on The Four Seasons activity. Students will portray
plants, animals, and people according to the season they have chosen. A
checklist will be used to assess participation in lesson and the studentsdrawings.
Lesson 3 Students will be assessed on the What is the Temperature? activity. Thestudents will be given a thermometer that has been placed in different areas and
water temperatures. The students will read and record the temperatures on theirthermometers. The teacher will check the temperature activity and assignstudents a grade.
Lesson 4 Students will be assessed on their participation in the lesson and review Tic Tac
Toe.
Lesson 5 Students will be assessed on the unit test. The teacher will check the test and
assign the students grades. The student needs to make at least a 70 on the testto pass.

Lesson Plan 1 - Weather
GPS:
S1E1. Students will observe, measure, and communicate weather data to see patterns in weather
and climate.
a. Identify different types of weather and the characteristics of each type.
Essential Question(s):
What is weather?
How can weather be different from day to day?
Key Knowledge:
What we want students to know.
Key terms weather, meteorologist
That weather is what the air is like outside.
That weather often changes from day to day.
Skills:
What we want students to be able to do:
Identify, observe, and record weather changes from one day to the next.
Identify different kinds of weather conditions sunny, cloudy, snowing, raining, windy, hot, and cold.
Procedure:
The teacher will introduce the unit on weather.
The teacher will show the students a Podcast entitled What is Weather?.
When the teacher has finished presenting the Podcast, she will review with the students
what weather is and the different types of weather.
She will then explain to the students that this week they will be keeping a daily weather
journal.
The teacher will show and explain the daily weather journal to the class. The teacher willexplain the information from the performance task from part II of the unit. When the
teacher has finished explaining the daily weather journal, she will have all the students
line up and walk outside.
She will ask them to observe the weather - if it is cloudy, rainy, sunny, hot, or cold.
She will then tell them to remember what they observed so that they can draw and record
it in their weather journals when they get back in the classroom.
The teacher will tell the students that they will be observing the weather everyday torecord in their journals.
The teacher will then bring the students back in.
She will pass out the weather journals and pictures. She will show the students on the
board what needs to be on the front of their journals. The students will then draw and
record what they observed outside. If possible, students may write what they saw and
felt.

How does weather change from season to season?
Key Knowledge:
What we want students to know.
Key term - season
That a season is a time of year.
That the weather changes from season to season.
Skills:
What we want students to be able to do:
Identify the four seasons.
Identify changes in the weather from season to season.
Procedure: 26-31 Minutes
The teacher will present the Podcast How Weather Changes and the Four Seasons to
the students.
When the teacher has finished presenting the Podcast, she will review with the students
the four seasons and the changes that take place from season to season.
The teacher will then explain to the students that they will be creating a four seasons
scene.
She will tell them that they will create a drawing that portrays plants, animals, and peopleaccording to the season they choose.
The teacher will walk around and assist students that are having trouble and answer any
questions students may have.

Lesson Plan 3 Measuring Weather
GPS:S1E1. Students will observe, measure, and communicate weather data to see patterns in weather
and climate.
b. Investigate weather by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments(thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature,
precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal or on a calendar
seasonally.
Essential Question(s):
How can we measure weather?
How can you find out how warm the air outside is?
What tool measures the direction of the wind?
What tool can you use to measure how much rain has fallen?
Key Knowledge:
What we want students to know.
Key terms temperature, thermometer, wind vane and rain gauge
That temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is.
That temperature is measured with a tool called a thermometer.
That a wind vane shows which way the wind is blowing.
That a rain gauge is used to measure how much rain falls.
Skills:What we want students to be able to do:
Use weather tools to observe and measure things about the weather.
Procedure:
The teacher will present the Podcast How Can We Measure Weather? to the students. She will ask the students questions throughout the book.
When the teacher has finished presenting the Podcast, she will review with the students
different ways to measure weather
She will then tell the students that they are going to use thermometers to measuredifferent temperatures.
The teacher will display the overhead thermometer. She will show the students how to
read a thermometer using the overhead thermometer.
After showing the students how to use a thermometer, the teacher will explain the activity
to the students.
She will explain that they are going to use the thermometer to measure differenttemperatures. She will tell them that they will work in pairs to read and record the

temperatures on their thermometers. She will tell the students that each pairs
thermometer will be different because they have been in different places. She will tell
them that some have been in the refrigerator, outside, in the hall, in hot water, in coldwater, in the classroom, and in the window sill.
The teacher will pass out the What Is the Temperature? activity sheet. The students will
complete the activity. The teacher will walk around and assist students that are having trouble and answer any
questions students may have.
After the students have completed their measurements, the teacher will discuss with theclass what they discovered and learned.
