In the Fall of 2018, the following courses used museum resources to complete assigned projects: THE 2020, TPP 4531, ARH 4144, ARH 4355, ARH 4800, ARH 3854, ARH 2050, SPC 2067, ARH 5797, DAA 3108, MUC 1211, ART 5927, ART 3471, ART 4970, ART 4928, ENC 1101. Enrollment across these classes (many of which have multiple sections) is well over 1500 students. Each of these students would have benefited from multimedia experiences while in the Museum, and could have used digital, on- line content when completing their research and course assignments. In addition to expanding upon the existing reach of the Museum to students on campus, Dr. Kyle Killian, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, will use the Museum’s new digital con- tent in ARH 2000: Art, Architecture, and Artistic Vision. This online course has enrollments of be- tween 500 and 900 students per semester. The Museum will work with Dr. Killian and others in the Department of Art History to ensure that the new digital content fits the objectives of the course and meets students’ needs for engaging and informative learning experiences. Project Title: Technology to Increase Museum of Fine Arts Accessibility Impact: 2500 students per semester who use MoFA collections and exhibitions to

complete course assignments

Cost: $6,493

Project Team: Dr. Preston McLane, Director, Museum of Fine Arts Meredith Lynn, Assistant Curator and Director of Galleries, Museum of Fine Arts

Project Description: The Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA / Museum) is applying for funds to purchase equipment to produce digital, online content that will make our collections and exhibitions more ac-cessible to students. We anticipate this project will enhance course materials for 2500 students each semester across the university.

We are applying for funds to purchase a camera, light kit, iPads and stands, and camera equipped drone. With this equipment, MoFA will digitally document all exhibitions, produce virtual tours of the Museum, record interviews with artists and scholars, and then make this content available on-line and in the museum. This project will make the exhibitions and Museum collections accessible to students anywhere at any time.

Instructional Impact: This project will impact coursework for 2500 students each semester. Each of these students would have benefited from multimedia experiences while in the Museum, and could have used digital, on-line content when completing their research and course assignments.

In addition to expanding upon the existing reach of the Museum to students on campus, Dr. Kyle Killian, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, will use the Museum’s new digital con-tent in ARH 2000: Art, Architecture, and Artistic Vision. This online course has enrollments of be-tween 500 and 900 students per semester. The Museum will work with Dr. Killian and others in the Department of Art History to ensure that the new digital content fits the objectives of the course and meets students’ needs for engaging and informative learning experiences.

Project Plan:Summer 2019: Purchase all equipment and work with CFA Information Technology Office to train staff on its use.

Fall 2019: Produce virtual tours of all museum exhibitions, including our three major exhibition projects. Produce supplementary educational videos, including interviews with scholars and artists. Publish digital catalogs for the exhibitions “Iceland” and “Ottoman Cultural Identity”, containing pro-fessional quality photo documentation of the artworks and scholarly research.

Spring 2020: Produce virtual tours of the two major spring exhibitions, as well as other complemen-tary video segments. Publish a digital catalog for the major spring exhibition.

Ongoing: Work with the Department of Art History to produce digital object guides for use in online courses.

Relationship to Other University Activities: Two key components of the University’s five-year stra-tegic plan are to enhance interdisciplinary programs and activities and to increase online learning opportunities. This project directly contributes to both initiatives.

Ongoing Costs: All continuing costs for this project are reasonably incorporated into MoFA’s annual budget. The Museum is already generating similar content, and the investment in new equipment will enable us to disseminate this work more effectively and efficiently.

Budget Explanation: The Museum’s requested budget is only for equipment expenses. The Museum has selected professional quality equipment not currently available to its faculty and staff to accom-plish the digital exhibitions objectives detailed above. There are no substantial set up, implementa-tion, or personnel costs.

Interfit F5 Overview

The F5 Three-Head Fluorescent Lighting Kit with Boom Arm from Interfit isa versatile photo or video lighting solution for portraits, products, orecommerce in the studio or on the road. The kit includes three F5 five-lampfixtures, each with a 20 x 28" softbox and five daylight-balanced compactfluorescent lamps. A boom clamp and boom that extends from 30-55" isincluded as well as a 10' air-cushioned stand to support it and a counterweightbag to balance one of the lights. Two 7.5' air-cushioned stands are provided forthe other two lamp heads and softboxes.

Having an overhead light has a significant effect of the quality of light in your setup. In

portraiture and group photography the fixture and softbox can be used as a hairlight to

add dimension to the shot by separating the subject from the background. Alternately,

the boom light could be used to light the background or small cyc from above, while

rotating the light allows you to feather the output to create a graduated background.

Using a light overhead and pointed down at the subject's face produces a high fashion

look and when used in product photography this setup adds modeling to the item to

selectively reveal its form.

The F5 head has a sturdy but lightweight polycarbonate construction with five Edison

base sockets. Power can be regulated via 3 toggles on the unit's back panel that power

on/off 2 lamps per switch and produce the tungsten equivalent of up to 800W. The lamp

head has a tilting adapter with an industry-standard receiver for mounting on stands

with a 5/8" (16mm) top stud. It's also conveniently designed to mount directly to the

included 20 x 28" softboxes without using a speed ring.
