• Theory of skin detoxification• Aveda Detoxifying Techniques

aveda detoxifying techniques

The Aveda Detoxifying Techniques increase circulation to the skin, which brings nutrition and helps the tissues to carry away wastes, leading to a clearer, healthier looking complexion. Once you have studied this information and experienced the learning activities with other participants, you should be able to reach the objectives outlined below.

learning objectives

• To describe the theory of skin detoxification • To understand which skin conditions and Elemental NaturesSM benefit

from detoxification as well as contraindications• To identify the movements used in the Aveda Detoxifying Techniques• To perform the Aveda Detoxifying Techniques

homeplay

when you have read the information in this section, you should be able to answer the following questions:

1. How do the detoxifying techniques improve circulation?

skin and circulation

The circulatory system helps support the main functions of the skin by delivering nutrients through blood and lymph. As the transportation system of the body, it delivers food, water, and oxygen to every tissue and organ. The blood carries vital, life-giving oxygen and nutrients to every cell of the body, supplying raw materials for the energy that powers an individual’s every thought and action.

If the circulatory pathways become congested or blocked, then needed supplies can’t reach outer tissues. The resulting uneven distribution of vital materials can cause various skin conditions, such as:• Blotchy or uneven skin tone, possible erythema

(red patches or nodules)• Dehydration (lack of moisture in the skin)• Edema (when skin swells due to congested circulatory pathways)• Keratinization (when skin cells adhere to each other, causing clogged

pores)

With improved circulation, the skin’s own natural elimination system discards impurities from the tissues more efficiently. This is why we position the Aveda Detoxifying Techniques at the beginning of the facial treatment, generally before refinement of the skin.

aveda detoxifying techniques vs. lymphatic drainage

The Aveda Detoxifying Techniques should not be considered Manual Lymphatic Drainage, but rather, effective techniques that respect the lymphatic system and the way lymph flows. These techniques focus on increasing the circulation to the skin of the face and supporting the natural flow of lymph through stimulated areas.

1: theory of skin detoxification

lymphatic system

As part of the circulatory system, the lymphatic system plays an extremely important role in the body. Blood travels from the heart via the arteries and into the capillaries to nourish cells and organs. Plasma passes through the capillary wall and into the tissue space. The space between the cells in this tissue space is filled with interstitial fluid. The interstitial fluid supplies the cells and receives all the cell waste. For the most part (80-98%) of the plasma that enters the tissue space and interstitial fluid returns through the venule end of the capillary into the venous system. 2-20% returns to the heart through the lymphatic vessels.

The lymph capillaries drain into larger vessels, which make up the lymphatic system. While flow through the lymphatic system is slow, massaging skeletal muscles compresses the lymph vessels and moves the lymph along the system. The lymph collected from the entire left side of the body, the digestive tract, and the lower portion of the right side of the body flow into the thoracic duct, which empties into the left subclavian vein, while lymph from the right side of the head, neck, and chest flows into the right subclavian vein, completing circulation.

trouble spots

If toxins are not filtered and disposed of efficiently, they can manifest themselves on the surface of the skin as congestion, edema, acne, or a blemish.

definitionvenous system

The venous system reabsorbs from 80 percent to 98 percent of interstitial fluid to complete circulation.

elemental natures

The Aveda Detoxifying Techniques are best for Infinity/Air nature because they stimulate circulation and work for Water/Earth nature because they motivate sluggish skin.

skin conditions

skin conditions and elemental naturesUse the Aveda Detoxifying Techniques for the following conditions:• Blemished skin (Water nature)• Oil-prone skin (Water/Earth natures)• Congestion/sluggish complexion (Water/Earth natures)• Dull skin/lack of circulation (Infinity/Air natures)

The Aveda Detoxifying Techniques can exacerbate skin with a Fire nature. Do not use on the following Fire nature skin conditions:• Overly sensitive skin• Rosacea• Heavily couperosed areas/overcirculation

positioning the detoxifying techniquesThese techniques work best when the skin has been properly cleansed and before refined. It is performed at the beginning of the facial treatment to take advantage of increased circulation throughout the remaining aspect of the treatment.

This type of manual manipulation does not take the place of the massage performed in a facial treatment. They are specific techniques performed to enhance circulation and can be integrated when customizing a facial treatment. Adjust the type and length of the massage when choosing to incorporate detoxifying manipulations.

commonly asked questions

1. How do I know which guests would benefit from the Aveda Detoxifying Techniques? There are some contraindications to using the Aveda Detoxifying Techniques on certain skin conditions. Make sure you properly assess the guest’s Elemental Nature before beginning the techniques. Infinity, Air, Water, and Earth Elemental Nature skin states benefit from these techniques. Guests with skin that is blemished, acne-prone, oil-rich, congested, or lacking in circulation will benefit the most from the Aveda Detoxifying Techniques.

2. Why isn’t detoxification beneficial to Fire natures, or guests with rosacea, heavily couperosed areas, or overly dry skin? These skin conditions do not suffer from the same inefficiencies within their circulatory systems and therefore do not need detoxification. In fact, detoxification can exacerbate these conditions.

3. How long do the effects of these techniques last before guests should return to the spa?Detoxification could be a regular part of a monthly maintenance facial for most Elemental Nature skin states. Home care routines can also help maintain a healthy complexion.

4. Why should detoxification occur at the beginning of a facial treatment? Detoxification increases circulation, and the ideal time to activate circulation is at the beginning of a facial treatment. This will positively affect the rest of the treatment and enhance all of the other techniques used during the facial treatment.

preparationApply a small amount of the Aveda calming or energizing composition to the skin of the décolleté, arms, neck and facial regions. Base your selection on the guest’s elemental nature. The composition and its affect on the autonomic nervous system will assist in improving the circulation to the skin which will help correct the imbalances reflected in the skin state. It is most effective to perform the Aveda detoxifying techniques while using a facial vapor to assist in softening the skin, improving circulation and assisting in the removal of impurities from the skin. It is important to improve skin circulation at the beginning of a facial treatment. These techniques can be performed in any 60 or 90 minute facial treatment and is not considered a replacement for the massage segment of the treatment. It is a technique primarily focused on addressing and improving the superficial circulation to the skin through the olfactory system and manual manipulation.

overall benefits of the aveda detoxifying techniques• Stimulate lymph nodes• Improve lymph flow• Clear accumulated lymph• Increase circulation and blood flow• Increase nutrition to the skin• Helps the tissues carry away accumulated wastes• Improve the appearance of the skin• Improve the health of the skin• Clear congestion

2. How much pressure should I use when applying the manual manipulation technique? The main movements involve pinching, twisting, and sliding. Therefore, use very light pressure. Increase pressure slightly when manipulating the axillary areas to help filter lymph that has accumulated in those areas.

3. When should I perform the Detoxifying Manipulations in a facial treatment? Perform this technique after skin analysis and before skin refinement to address and improve the circulation to the skin of the face early into the treatment and to see the beneficial effects as you progress throughout the procedure.
